August 18, 201610 yr Author And the Washington Monument had an elevator cable break yesterday. 84 people had to walk down nearly 50 stories. It remains closed today. http://wtop.com/dc/2016/08/elevator-problem-closes-washington-monument-3/
August 18, 201610 yr Maybe the heat had a factor into the cable breaking like last time? 2nd time in I believe 30 days?
August 18, 201610 yr Author Maybe the heat had a factor into the cable breaking like last time? 2nd time in I believe 30 days? Last time, it's believed that increased air conditioning use caused a voltage drop which then tripped a circuit breaker.

Last time, it's believed that increased air conditioning use caused a voltage drop which then tripped a circuit breaker.I'm actually quite surprised with all this heat that it seems only the Monument has had some problems(and or indirect effect since the heat causes the AC use to be high).... Maybe if there wasn't a height restriction in the district we would be seeing more issues since there are really no other tall buildings in DC?

August 24, 20169 yr Earthquake damage likely cause of Washington Monument elevator breakdowns: http://wtop.com/dc/2016/08/earthquake-damage-likely-cause-of-washington-monument-elevator-breakdowns/slide/1/ Wouldn't routine inspections detect problems such as a frayed cable? Those things don't just snap overnight.
August 24, 20169 yr Author "...could be contributing..." "...may be the cause..." The headline does not agree with the story, which is why I didn't post it yesterday. The NPS is apparently speculating. Speculating is not investigating. Thus I did not post that article yesterday.

September 1, 20169 yr These days most major media outlets are more interested in being the first to cover something rather than being accurate.
September 26, 20169 yr Author The National Park Service has announced that the Washington Monument will not in fact reopen during September but rather will remain closed indefinitely. They have not identified what specifically is causing the elevator problems. It has been closed since August 17. They hope to have more information in the next couple of weeks. The Monument is unlikely to reopen until the elevator has been "modernized."
