Orion is a fun ride but has become a meme in the enthusiast community. It’s safe to say most people expected Orion to surpass Fury 325 in some capacity, or at least have similar stats.

I think Orion’s biggest flaw isn’t its stats but rather its timing- being built 5 years after a larger model was built in the same chain.

This ultimately begs the question: How differently would Orion have been received by the community if it came before Fury 325?

There still would've been disappointment/criticism as it's not bigger than Millennium Force in the same state. That only fueled the decades old theory that Cedar Fair purposely does the bare minimum at KI bc of fear of upstaging Cedar Point.

Orion also is shorter than I305 and Leviathan in stats so that would also draw criticism.

In any other park, Orion is a flagship coaster. But within the KI-scape that includes a coaster like Diamondback, it will always play second fiddle. The layouts are too similar, with elements of Orion riding like lesser versions of what can be experienced elsewhere in the park.

I’ve had a bit of a personal renaissance with Orion over the last season or two. It’s a blast. There are just better coasters in the park. Comparison is ultimately a thief of joy, so it’s important to enjoy it for what it is, regardless of stats, etc. It’s just not the coaster it’s “supposed” to be.

That said, regardless of timeline, I still believe reception would’ve been the same given the park it’s in.

I absolutely love Orion. it is a bit short, but I love the speed it hauls through the layout. Getting a bit older so short rides are not too bad...ha! Love Diamondback too for the abundance of airtime it gives. Love The Beast just cause it is one badass coaster. We are spoiled with the coasters we have at our park.

I have ridden Fury and I-305 or whatever it's named now, and Fury is in a class all its own. Obviously, there was some money to spend on that one, because after I rode it the first time I was floored. The elements and pacing of that ride are what makes it my favorite steel coaster I have ridden. My favorite things in coasters are sustained speed, some airtime and a wild ride. Voyage I cannot get enough of. Rode it 25 times last time at Holiday World. Speed and airtime. And after finally riding Top thrill 2 last year, it is a must ride every year. That backwards launch up the spike is the real speed I was looking for. It is such a rush! That's why I love The Beast too, not so much airtime, but it has speed and is a wild ride. And nothing comes close to the final helix at night. It is a zen moment every time hauling through those tunnels.
