September 30, 200322 yr Dropzone is one of my fav. rides and the last time I was at the park I observed Drop Zone rotating part way then half way it wouldnt. Or sometimes is would rotate all the way up the hill and other wouldnt roate at all. Plus it seem to me that it moves slower up the hill.
September 30, 200322 yr I don't recal seeing a hill but it only rotates half way up the tower and it does it every time, i have been trying since i started going to pki to figure out what tipe of device controls the rotation
October 9, 200322 yr Author Yes I know it just hasnt seemed as it was in 1999. They let some little people on Drop zone
October 9, 200322 yr Drop Zone Does not spin all the way up it stops after you are in your orignal postion and stays there. I remember when dropzone seemed tall then I went to CP. It still is high for a freefall though. They should make one line 500ft tall that would be scary.
October 28, 200322 yr Author So you only rotate around the pole once because i think I rember it roating all the way up the pole.
November 4, 200322 yr In 1999 it was to roate all the way to the top, you would go all the way around twice. Drop Zone has experienced alot of problems with the roating. Sometimes it doesn't roate at all just goes up. So now that's why it only roates once. It's been doing that for atleast the last 2 seasons.
November 9, 200322 yr Author I wish you would rotate all the way up. I also heard from CoasterGuy107 that DZ also had lift problems and it had lift problems that one side would go up faster than the other. and the car would go up tilted.
December 24, 200322 yr i would think that would cause it to lock up if i didn't go up evenly, that would really suck!
January 8, 200422 yr you know while drop zone is going up, you notice when you look up @ right side of the car you can see 2 motors controlling the rotation. There are different versions of the gyro drop, the tilt gyro drop, that sucker tilts the seats @ a 15' degree angle and its pretty terrifying :cowboy: and the newer version of the Drop Tower (PKD's Drop Zone) the sucker seats like 50 people, and the magnets come in later for more airtime on DZ @ PKD :chef:
January 9, 200422 yr I think so...but DZ isn't all about airtime. I think that one of the most fun parts of riding DZ is going up and getting held at the top for seven seconds. When you are up here you are just praying that they let you down as fast as they can and you are scared ****less!
January 10, 200422 yr Author True but I still think that DZ at pki is the better of them. The one that tilts is only like 200 feet. and the had a video and you only drop for like 2 seconds. I think that the DZ at PKI is the most exmtreme free fall in the midwest. Even though it can get boring after 35 times in one season
January 10, 200422 yr Author sorry about the double post but i was wording did they ever find out why that person died on a ride like DZ
July 9, 200422 yr speaking of that... someone who was 13 died on drop zone, and now it's not rotating at all! all 4 drop zones were shut down. My cousin's cousin is saying they are thinking about tearing all 4 down, but i don't believe that will happen.
July 9, 200422 yr In August, 1999, a 12-year-old boy was killed when he fell from Intamin's Drop Zone Stunt Tower freefall ride at Paramount's Great America theme park in Santa Clara, California. An investigation into his death yielded no explanation as to why he fell from the ride.
July 9, 200422 yr The kid you are referring to was (I think) mentally retarded and his mom forced him on the ride. Somehow he was able to free himself from the restraint.
July 9, 200422 yr Author I heard three different stories on what caused his death. Story one was that there was a restraint malfuction. A guest on the ride said he heard a click (after the click that is supposed to happen) and he looked over and the restraint was up. Story number 2 was that the boy was too little to ride. Story 3 was that he had a preexstiing condition and he lost upper body control and that caused him to fall out. You can belevive what one you want but 3 sounds the most realistic cause restraints almost never come up and number 2 how many 12 year old kids are too short to ride dropzone?
July 9, 200422 yr I have heard that he suffered from some sort of mental conditional and was forced onto the ride. The moral of the story is to never force an unwinning partron onto a ride. Whether they're scared or don't feel like riding, or whatever. Especially when it comes to children because they are extremely likely to attempt to exit the ride while it's in motion.
July 10, 200422 yr No, they are not thinking about tearing down any of the DZ's. I think this was a fluke mishap, not a restraint failure. So, no need to close any of them.
July 11, 200422 yr No, they are not thinking about tearing down any of the DZ's. I think this was a fluke mishap, not a restraint failure. So, no need to close any of them. but they did...
July 11, 200422 yr I don't know if it is just me or not but my dad noticed this to about DZ. Last season when you were rising up the tower it was all smooth, which is normal.. well this season as it rose closer to the top I noticed it would bounce until the very top like the lift was having trouble pulling the seats up or something. Everytime I rode it, it would bounce. Is that normal? I guess its not a big problem or they wouldn't let anyone on if it was.
July 17, 200422 yr Author Yea I guess they are having problems with the motor that rotates the seats cause it wasnt roatating today or yesterday. Another thing I noticed was that it goes real slow up part way then stops, goes real fast then stops again, and goes up another 10 feet really slow.
