Jesse, Here is a link to the online version of my DAAPWorks stuff: http://www.daap.uc.edu/daapworks/2009/detail?work_id=2257. You can click on any of the images to get an expanded view. If you want to check out my entire thesis document, you can find that here: http://www.daapspace.daap.uc.edu/~zerhusrf..._renderings.pdf On my one day off from Coney this week (today) I am working on updating my portfolio and trying to track down some places to apply to for full time employment.

Yeah. Coney`s July 3rd celebration always has a lot of family friendly activities. And, Sunlite Pool stays open until 9:30 pm, and the rides stay open until 10pm. If you arrive early in the day, the rides and parking are not very busy. But if you arrive in the early evening (around 5 to 7), expect larger crowds. But even then, the lines are not that long (tops at around thirty minutes). I most likely will be working all day on both the third and the fourth. Say hi if you do come down to Coney.

For those looking for something to do on Friday, July 3rd, Coney is having the 10th annual LaRosa`s Balloon Glow. The balloons "glow" from 8 to 10pm. There are lots of other family friendly activities planned throughout the day. The evening is capped off with a Rozzi`s Famous Fireworks show over Lake Como. Speaking from experience here, but the show is really awesome, particularly the close proximity to the launching zone! For a full list of events at Coney Island on July 3rd, check out ConeyIslandCentral.com

Yep. Today was a rather slow day on the rides side at Coney, but the pool had a very busy day. I also enjoyed the air conditioning in the ticket booth for early shift, even though I do not particularly like working the ticket booth.

Well, Coney offers birthday packages. Granted, I don`t think Coney`s are that expensive per person, but there are a lot of people that utilize that opportunity. So I could see this being a very popular product offering.

June 21st is Coney`s birthday. It is 123 years old this year! Back in 1886, James Parker sold his apple orchard in March to the Ohio Grove Corporation for $17,500. They made improvements to the property and opened "Ohio Grove: The Coney Island of the West" on a rainy June 21st, 1886. The following year, the Ohio Grove name was dropped and the park was simply "Coney Island." Happy Birthday Coney Island!

10th Annual LaRosa`s Balloon Glow at Coney
CoastersRZ replied to CoastersRZ's topic in Coney Island Central
Are you talking about the actual Fourth of July and not the third? From previous experience, the fourth of July isn`t all that busy. But since it is on a Saturday this year, it may be busier than normal. If you arrive early on the 3rd of July (before 4 or 5), you will have no problem enjoying all the rides and Sunlite pool at a leisurely pace. The rides side really picks up around 6 or 7 on the third, particularly once the balloons start glowing. Traffic into the Coney lots can get very busy after 6pm, so I recommend getting there in the early afternoon, and try to park in gate 2 (the main Coney Island auto gate). Remember though, that there is discounted pool and rides admission after 4pm, but that the parking fee increases after that time. They launch the fireworks from near gate 1 (right next to the employee lot), and it usually takes five to ten minutes after the fireworks are over for them to open that parking lot. It can take a long time to leave on the 3rd. But the fireworks are awesome, and you are so close to them if you are along the shores of Lake Como where the rides are that you can really feel the concussions from the shells. I hope that information helps. -
Dozens of hot air balloons glow over Coney in the evening of Friday July 3rd. The night is capped by the largest fireworks display in the event history from Rozzi`s Famous Fireworks over Lake Como. Sunlite Pool will remain open until 9:30pm with the rides staying open until 10pm. Additionally all guests who purchase a pool ticket will be able to remain in the Sunlite Pool area to view the fireworks. Admission to the event is FREE. However, normal rates apply to Sunlite Pool and Coney`s Classic Rides. Please note that Kellogg Avenue is closed from 9:45 until after the fireworks. Also, parking is $10 after 4pm. Below is the schedule of events: 1:00-3:00 94.9 The Rewind will be at Sunlite Pool searching for some “Coney Kids”. Kids will have the chance to be featured in a video on The Rewind’s and Coney’s website! 1:00 The Greater Cincinnati Radio Control Club will fly radio control airplanes over Coney’s ballfields, and will sail radio control boats on Lake Como! 3:30-7:30 Q102 will be LIVE at Coney – stop by for music, games and prizes! 5:30 An exciting aerial acbrocatic show will perform throughout the evening! 6:00-9:00 Balloon sculptors, stiltwalkers and jugglers in Moonlite Square! 6:30-9:30 Live music at Moonlite Gazebo from the University of Cincinnati’s Bearcat Band Jazz Ensemble 6:30-9:30 Live music in Moonlite Mall from the Anderson Township Symphony Orchestra 8:00-10:00 Hot air balloons “glow” in Moonlite Mall! 9:30 Sunlite Pool closes for swimming. New in 2009 – people who have purchased a Pool ticket may stay and watch the fireworks from inside Sunlite Pool! 10:00 Classic Rides close. 10:00 Rozzi’s Famous Fireworks over Lake Como – the largest display in event history!! -Robbie

Fireworks Kick off Extended Coney Schedule
CoastersRZ replied to CoastersRZ's topic in Coney Island Central
The fireworks on June 27th have been rescheduled to July 11th, so as not to interfere with the 311 concert at Riverbend. Remember that Coney`s classic rides are now open until 10pm every Saturday in June, July, and August. -
Yep. Given that the Fourth of July falls on a Saturday, expect it to be more crowded than a typical Fourth of July. Much also depends on the weather. Last year, crowds were light because there was on and off rain all day on the fourth.

FOF used to run with train 2 and 3. Now it is 1 and 3, so you must have saw train 2 sitting there. Train 1 still has the video stickers on them from a couple years ago. O and that building by timberwolf is the old monorail station, and is the site for steel coaster maintenance. Flight of Fear originally had four trains. However, it never operated with all four. When the trains were converted from over the shoulder restraints to lap bars, only three of the trains were converted. Some of the remains of the fourth, non converted train can be seen, as stated, by Timberwolf. There are a few cars also stored in the drum for Flight of Fear. Since Flight of Fear only operates with two trains, I believe that the third train that is not on the tracks gets rebuilt during the summer months, so that the maintenance guys only have to rebuild one Flight of Fear train every off season. And that building next to Timberwolf is NOT the monorail station. It was the maintenance building for the monorail. The transfer track area was located where the old Flight of Fear cars are stored. The actual station for the monorail would be approximately where the On Location shop is located. And on the subject of Diamondback`s splash down water. That water is recirculated,You can see one of the pumps and catch basins for the water in a corner of the splash down. I would presume that the water is chlorinated and/or treated. I have not noticed a "vomit" smell from the water, and I have ridden Diamondback several times. And yes, I know what a protein spill smells like, having witnessed (and had to clean) several at Coney throughout the years.

I believe that the early ride times and most perks apply only to Gold and Platinum passes. However, as always, your best bet for a definite answer would be to call the park, or ask when you are there. They will be able to tell you the most accurate information.

SIX FLAGS FILES BANKRUPTCY--CHAPTER 11
CoastersRZ replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
That "other" park would be Worlds of Fun in Kansas City. Not to mention they may end up selling the assets of Great America, depending whatever happens with the 49ers stadium. CF owns a lease to the land and the parking lots, and does not actually own the land that the park sits on. -
When Will The Lights Go Out For The Beast? (or ON!)
CoastersRZ replied to PKISecurity's topic in Kings Island
Well the area by the station used to have water/be a small pond. That was before you exited the way you currently do. You used to exit on the path that now serves as a maintenance road and re-emerge on the midway to the right of the entrance, not the left as it is now. There used to be water flowing in the trough structure adjacent to the station. Issues with removing trash and stagnant water being a breeding ground for mosquitoes were some issue why it was removed. -
No need to shout in your topic title! Well, in no particular order, there is Millenium Force, Top Thrill Dragster, Magnum XL 200, Gemini, and Maverick. But its hard not to mention gems like the Blue Streak, Raptor, Wildcat or Corkscrew.

SIX FLAGS FILES BANKRUPTCY--CHAPTER 11
CoastersRZ replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Actually, I believe that all suppliers will be paid in full. The $1.8 billion dollars in debt is being exchanged for equity. This means that the real losers are the stock holders of SIX. Their shares will be worth less. Granted, I think its safe to say that any one who had some serious money in Six Flags stock removed their money quite some time ago. -
Nik Wallenda is stopping at Cedar Fair parks across the country this summer, doing a high wire walk. He will be at Kings Island on August 16th (the same day as the Run Kings Island). Nik will appear at Cedar Point on July 26th. Check out the official press release on Cedar Fair`s website here: http://www.cedarfair.com/nik_wallenda/

Yes, I would agree with that comment. It would be nice to have that on their official website. But unfortunately, they have been posting that to their Facebook page and not their website.

SIX FLAGS FILES BANKRUPTCY--CHAPTER 11
CoastersRZ replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
I closed the other topic, since it did not have a link to the official press release. Interesting that they don`t mention the B word in the headline of their press release. Its as if they are trying to make it sound like this filing was part of their original plan to turn the company around all along. That, or they don`t want to scare off potential customers who might not want to go to an amusement park where the parent company is undergoing Chapter 11 reorganization. -

For the latest updates on Coney status, particularly on closings due to inclement weather, you should check out Coney`s Facebook group here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cincinnati-O...98760525?ref=ts. They typically post any closings due to inclement weather on there, as well as any other special events, etc.

Yep. And they are still giving fans a snapping good time as the Danny Phantom Flyers. Its really a shame that they removed such a classic ride that could be enjoyed by grandparents and young kids alike. I for one would be happy if they bought a new version of that ride. Stick it where the Eurobungy is, or over in XBase, between The Racer, Adventure Express and Flight of Fear. Or, stick it in the large grassy patch next to the International Showplace and adjacent to the transfer track on Diamondback. I still say that they need to place an attraction there to liven up that pathway.

I believe that Cory mistook you as Beast1979 who is a kid.

Due to the rainy weather conditions, Sunlite Pool and Coney Island are closed today, Wednesday, June 10th.

Cinn. Zoo PTC Coaster?
CoastersRZ replied to TOPGUN1993's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Yes, the Cincinnati Zoo did have some amusement park rides, and a coaster. According to Amusement Parks of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky by Robert J. Wimberg, the zoo`s wooden coaster opened in 1926. It was designed by Herbert P. Schmeck (Philadelphia Toboggan Company). The only details the book lists about the ride is that it was a "junior roller coaster." I don`t know much more than that, I`m afraid. Other amusement rides at the zoo included a whip, a Ferris wheel, and a PTC Carousel. A train would join the line up of rides in the amusement area at the zoo, which was dubbed "Kiddieland" and later renamed "Playland." The zoo closed Playland in 1978 to make room for the new ape display. See below for an expanded history on the PTC Carousel. The PTC Carousel opened at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1918. It was PTC #49, and predates PTC #79 which opened at Coney and now runs at Kings Island by eight years. The carousel features three rows of horses, with 28 jumping horses, 20 stationary horses and two chariots. The zoo sold the Carousel in 1974 to the Marriott Corporation for use at Great America, in Santa Clara, California. It opened there in the County Fair area under the name Ameri-go-round in 1975. It would run at Great America until 1995 when it was put into storage at the park. It was then sold to Tom and Linda Allen, of Seattle, in 1999 who in turn donated the Carousel to the Woodland Park Zoo also in Seattle. It reopened in a new carousel pavilion at the Woodland Park Zoo in 2006, where it continues to operate today. Here is a link to some photos of PTC #49 at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, featured on the National Carousel Association website: http://www.nca-usa.org/psp/WoodlandParkZoo/# Some other notable Cincinnati Zoo facts: *It is the second oldest zoo in the country, behind only the Philadelphia Zoo, which opened 14 months earlier. *The Zoo was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. *On September 1st, 1914 "Martha" the last passenger pigeon in the world, died at the Cincinnati Zoo, meaning that the passenger pigeon became extinct after her death. *Ironically, the zoo added a Chance Carousel in 2003. *The Reptile House at the zoo is the oldest zoo building in the United States. *Architect James W. McLaughlin (who designed the Shillito`s building downtown (which was the name of the department store before it was rebranded, Macys and Lazarus before that)) designed many of the original zoo buildings. You knew I HAD to include a tidbit on an architect, since I am graduating with my Masters of Architecture in less than a week. *Mary Emery was a philanthropist that helped finance the zoo through difficult times in the early 1900s. Mary Emery is also the person that commissioned the planned community of Mariemont on the east side of Cincinnati. Mariemont is one of the first planned communities in the United States, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2007.
