touche' The Beastie eh...you're raising your little one right!

Thats kinda cheating because you can't actually see The Crypt or Diamondback! I just noticed in my 2011 picture the guy in the tye-dye shirt laying down...i'm sure he'd love to know he had been "immortalized" like this on the internet.

Ah...another Monday is here...and Christmas is only seven days away! 1974 It’s little things in some of these photos that I like sometimes...in this case I like seeing the boy trying to run so he doesn’t miss the train...which i’m sure was a lot bigger deal then than it is today. (Unless you were just heading to Boomerang Bay.) 2011 I think I am on the money with this shot...although I could be off by a couple of feet. With all of the umbrellas & the bushes and the fence it was tough to see much. I based my location on the wooden lamp post in the center which appeared to be original. So where would I rather be today? I don’t think there’s much doubt that the train ride was way cooler back in 1974 than now. (Politically incorrect for sure...but fun just the same.) I do thank the park immensely though for still keeping the train around...it is one of the most relaxing things to do in the park...and a godsend to any parent who needs to sit down while still keeping a toddler occupied.

Thanks for the info. (I got my information from the park map on the park's website. ) I am the type of a person who can walk/drive by a building on a daily basis and never notice what it is...until the day comes when I have to find it for some reason.

^Jesse, I don't think Paul meant you in the "they"...you will always be an "us".

I love BOTH of the photos in today’s set. 1974 There is so much I love about looking at this photo, the skyride, the people on the lower level observation deck, the banners, the swans...truly a great time to be in the park! 2011 Judging by how little of the bottom of the “dock” you can see I am wondering if the park keeps the water level higher than back in 1974...or I just caught it on a higher day. Does the park adjust the water level in the pond? (Anyone...anyone....Bueller....Bueller...) So where would I rather be today? Even after listing all of the great stuff in the 1974 photo I can not say that I choose 1974. I love Viking Fury...so I can’t vote against it in the 2011 shot...so today I refuse to choose. As always ever and ever thanks for all of the participation...and have a great weekend!

I am assuming that you didn't mean this to come off quite like I took it...I also have a life. Sometimes I joke that I don't...but the fact of the matter is I also work 40 hours a week, plus for 7 months this year I spent an ungodly amount of hours every day renovating a house...now i'm building a playhouse...and I still find time to visit this site. If just a member can find the time to contribute then why not the people who are "running" the site? If they are bored with the site why not find members who aren't? (And yes, adding Jesse/Avatar was the best thing to happen to this site in eternity.) (Just trying to stay on "the list"!)

And the winner is...Jen Grams from Middletown, OH . So Jen...are you a poster here? Congrats!

^jlopez, Interpreter & windshawne...a very interesting conversation. When I purchased these 1974 photos I purchased them “blind”...so I didn’t know what I was getting until I received them. (I believe P.T. Barnum had a famous quote about me!) Anyway, when I saw today’s 1974 photo I was VERY happy to own it...I like seeing a nice aerial close-up shot of the old theater. I am used to seeing the theater off in the distance looking like a red blob. (So having this shot made up for some of the lesser shots that came in this set of photos.) 1974 I also like seeing Der Spinnen Keggers from this angle...you can almost picture Alice getting a little sick. 2011 This area has changed quite a bit. Here is what still exists: 1974 2011 So, where would I rather be today...I would say that today I would like to go back to 1974...but only because I never think I went into the theater...and if I did I can’t remember it. I am guessing that I would probably be disappointed once I did go in...but at least my curiosity would be ended.

Yes, how times have changed. I can clearly remember the very first my mom came home and told us about this place she heard about in Ohio. She described how it was supposed to have some of the most amazing landscaping anywhere. For weeks we kept begging to go and finally she relented. For our entire 3 1/2 hour journey to the park all of us kids could hardly contain ourselves...we kept asking things like "Do you think they'll have marigolds?"..."Will there be tulips?" "How about roses?" We drove my parents crazy with our excitement! Once we got there my dad noticed that they also had rides at the park...he would constantly try dragging us kids away from the landscaping....but we were having none of that. We were there for the landscaping and we weren't gonna waste our time on the rides!* Thanks for the jab! *Wouldn't this be the most pathetic bunch of kids if that's the way we really were back then.

Good morning...or afternoon to you late sleepers! When you put it like this I agree, I love nature. ("I love the outdoors, whenever i'm not indoors that's where you'll find me." - Frank Burns) The problem I have nowadays is no matter how much I like seeing exotic animals, I can't get it out of the back of my head how much happier most of them would be out in the wild. But that would make you old...too! Today’s photo set is a slightly different...because it’s not quite in the park. 1974 I have some fond memories of the trams...it seemed so magical to wait and board them and be taken to the park. (Although now that I am older I can’t imagine wasting my time waiting for one when I could just walk and be at the entrance faster. ) The two things that caught my attention in this photo are: A. The boy in his tube socks...oh what a time period...the boys of today don’t know what they missed having those “cool” fashion accessories. (The only downside of having the striped socks is that you had to find a matching pair...nowadays I just grab any two white socks in my drawer.) B. The lady on the back of the tram looking up...it’s like she’s just thinking “I wonder if it’s gonna rain today”. 2011 Where would I rather be today...1974 or 2011? Well if I base it solely on these two photos I would say that I would go for 2011 because I think the trams are a waste of gas...BUT I would choose 1974 if I could reach into the picture and grab me one of those old Scooby Doo parking signs! Thanks for all of the comments!

I could kick myself for merging the 2 layers together on the above "working" photo...I would have liked to show everyone how tricky this one was. Basically to figure this shot out I found an aerial of the same area in 1974. Like I have mentioned in the past, it's amazing how many people take almost the exact same shots year after year...even I had a FEW almost identical shots that I have taken over the years every time I go up in the tower! Anyway, I resized both of the 1974 & 2010 aerial shots to match...which was actually pretty easy. The "constant" in both photos is the Kafe Kilimanjaro Restaurant building which is currently Stunt Crew Grill...it is such a distinctive building it was easy to overlay both photos to match perfectly. From there it became a matter of looking at what was in "my" 1974 photo and where the person had to have been standing...in this case I used the car as a clue...and then TombraiderTy pointed out that the angle of the monorail helped pin it down even more. After that it simply became a matter of making the 2010 layer invisible...then while looking at the 1974 aerial, mark where the person was standing and the line of site and then make the 2010 aerial visible again and I had my spot and which way to aim my camera! While I was figuring out shots like this it was always fun to see where I should be standing once I made the 2010 shot visible again...and if the shot would be possible. Once again, check out Ty's Lion Country Safari thread and you can see an aerial of this area with the islands.

Nice to see you back...and thanks for letting me know that you enjoyed the photos. Today's photo set features the last shot of the Lion Country Safari in this series. In my opinion the 1974 shot is not that special...but I did enjoy finding out where that island would have been....and speaking of that.... Ty, THIS is the shot that I PM'd you for your help...and I thank you for helping me out! 1974 2011 And here is the photo from my first post just in case you need a little better idea of where I was standing: While I was taking this shot, out of the possible/probable embarrassment I purposely did not make eye contact with any of the ride ops...I did NOT want to have to explain what I was doing and then watch them roll their eyes at me. Where would I rather be standing today? I love turtles...but if you have been following this thread you know that since Congo Falls is in the 2011 shot that is where I want to be! Thanks for all of the continued support...and as always thanks to Hendrick for making this thread come to life!

Thanks for adding the extra photos! (It makes the off-season seem to go by faster.)

^74Gibson...I always like to think of myself as fairly diplomatic...but that feeling disappears when I read some of your posts.

In today's photo set you get to see one of the nicest shots in the series...and the worst. 1974 Is this not impressive?! 2011 Is this not depressing?! Out of all the shots in my series this is the ONLY one that screams "What went wrong?!" How could an area that looked so nice turn into something so bad? The park should make some kind of lift-on/off decorative covering to disguise that ugly thing. (They could even sell advertising space on it! 1974 or 2011....I need not answer...it's way too obvious.

Brad, And thank YOU for sharing your photos! I can tell I really missed out on something good! I remember walking around the Diamondback construction area when it was still just dirt and footers. (Near where the old trailer tower was. ) I would have really loved to have walked down there now in it's completed state. Thanks again!

Add me to the list of jealous! I would have killed to walk the tracks and see the buildings at a nice slow pace where you could/did get great photos. This event slipped past me...and by the time I found out about it I was already scheduled to work. Thank you SO much for at least letting me feel like I was there. P.S. Congrats on winning the media kit!

Told ya!

I appreciate the kind words. I linked to one of your favorites in my first post of this thread. It was TombraiderTy who put together the VERY fine history of the Lion Country Safari. (Among other great threads.) I am not sure which thread you are thinking of when you mention the KI history one though. I tried to search for it but couldn’t figure it out...but while searching I did wander across this thread from KIFan73 which is coming up on it’s 1 year anniversary...there are some great shots in this thread...and knowing that he loves to take park photos...maybe next year he can show us what these would look like in 2012 on their 40th Anniversary! (Although the one’s from the skyride will be a tough project! ) I would like to say that there have been SO many fine threads on this site over the years I would personally have a tough time choosing even my Top 10. There are a lot of awesome threads that just don’t seem to get the recognition that they deserve. I would also like to say that this thread would not have been possible if I didn’t have some “go to” posters. If I had a question about what something in a photo was...or to verify where I should stand...or I needed a certain old park shot to use as a reference I was fortunate enough that there are members on this site who are more than happy to help me out. (Which in turn helped make this thread more accurate...and me look less like a fool!)

^Gator, thanks for the memories! I found it surprising that you can't lay claim to riding Kings Island's sky ride...that's too bad that you were deprived of that.

I hope you know that it was in no way my intention to "prove you wrong". (I am the first to admit that I am not "Mr. Observant") I did not even know myself if it was or wasn't still there...you made me have to search through my photos to see if I missed that this year! Believe me...when I type ANYTHING that I think I know about the park I just sit back and wonder if the experts are going to shoot down my observation. I like the 1974 shot in today's set...when I was going through these shots after I purchased them this one caught my eye because I am used to only seeing faraway shots of the slide. 1974 I wonder why these type of slides fell by the wayside? I remember them being quite a bit of fun...and just this summer my nephews rode a small one at a local carnival and seemed to have a blast. 2011 Not much to look at in this shot...but as we all know, if this shot were pulled back Zephyr is quite the nice looking ride. Where would I rather be today? Well, at the risk of proving 74Gibson correct...I lean towards 1974 for a second day in a row. Zephyr is a nice looking ride but it seems to be the kind of a ride that is hit and miss with a lot of my family...when one is in the mood to ride it another one isn't...I can't remember when everyone wanted to ride it at the same time. That would probably be true with the slides too...but at least the non-riders would have a good time watching the riders...unlike on Zephyr where everyone is a quick blur as they go by...it's not even a nice photo op. Have a nice weekend...which is tough for me to say since I am looking out the window at snow!

I kept waiting for Paul to jump in with a (better) photo...but since that hasn't happened, here is a shot from Oct. of this year...the footing appears to still be there under the boat.

Hendrick is out of town at the moment...he was hoping to be back in time to post today's fade himself...but he PM'd it to me in case he didn't make it...so here it is: As always, thanks to Hendrick!

If this thread turns into another footing vs. footer debate, I blame you!
