Richard Kinzel: Market Will Thaw
Coney Islander replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Actually, the answer is pretty simple. We don't have anything against taking a family visit to Kings Island... Its just that Coney Island has more family oriented stuff, and is closer. Sure the rides aren't as impressive and the views aren't as breathtaking, but we've found a niche at Coney, and we love it. If you haven't been to Coney Island, I really suggest it. A great place for families, The pool alone can keep you occupied for quite a long time. (Some say days...) Keep in mind that a large part of the pool is shallow, great for young children to splash around and play. -

^^ It would be incorrect to say that this 'put a bad taste in my mouth'. Kings Island can add any type of attraction they please. Its just that, since Coney Island has more abundant family activities, given a choice between the two, my family generally chooses Coney. The Pool, The Rides, The Slides, The Shows, The Games, The Gardens, The Space for picnics and sport activities leave more than enough to do in one day... And very inexpensive, compared to Kings Island. (The racetrack, also a plus. Though technically not part of Coney.) // Yes, Kings Island has 33 , but many of them have maximum height limits, two of them will get you wet, and some of them (Danny Phantom's Flyers, in particular) are very uncomfortable, for many guests... Make sure to check out this list. 21 out of Kings Island's 34 defunct rides were family oriented. Kings Island's purpose has definitely shifted, over the years. // This is one of those topics we've just got to 'agree to disagree.' -

I do have very young cousins, and I understand that their expression on rides are truly priceless. I make sure to get as many pictures as I can. Still, *I* would love even more to enjoy the rides with them. Though, I am the only teen I know of who very much enjoys kiddie circle rides... And Frog Hoppers. They're a blast! Sure, there are many intense thrill rides at Kings Island, that you can ride with your children. But, there really aren't very many 'gentle' rides... My mother does not want an extreme, or even thrilling experience, and her very favorite rides were The Antique Cars, and the Flying Eagles. She hasn't been to Kings Island, since their removal. True gentle rides, Kings Island has The Dodgems, The Grand Carousel, Woodstock Express, Race For Your Life Charlie Brown, The Great Pumpkin Coaster, Snoopy's Junction, and the Kings Island and Miami Valley Railroad. The rest of Kings Island ride's are meant to thrill, no matter how small the thrill is. -

Two things. 1.) True, I don't go to Kings Island all that often... Once, maybe twice a year, so it actually is pretty likely I've gone on days in which not many families are visiting. 2.) Planet Snoopy pleases the younger part of a family group. Sure, the kids might love the park, but how much do the parents enjoy their visit? Yes, they will enjoy watching their children, but how much more would they enjoy spending the whole day doing activities and riding rides with their children? Sure, they have the train, the Coney Mall flats, Snoopy Surf Dog, Woodstock Express, Snoopy Rocks on Ice, but (1) The family rides are few and far between, and (2) Many families don't even know about them... You'd think they could put a little bit of information about these in the park map, or something. I did not include Adventure Express, The Crypt, or Flight Deck... The park map lists them aggressive thrill rides, so they do not fit in the family category. (Though they should...) This, to me, does not scream family. -

^^ My definition: Two parents, and a child, or children. All I'm saying is that they could be doing much better at bringing in the families. -

Uhm... Competition? The money almost goes to the same exact place... Yes, but if Cedar Fair were to shift its focus to families, more people seeking thrills would go to Cedar Point, and Kings Island will be drawing a large number of people from the family market, which they haven't done for quite a long time. I can't recall ever seeing a family at Kings Island... Sometimes a parent with their children, in Planet Snoopy, but never a whole family. And Planet Snoopy isn't a large enough section for a whole day visit. -

Personally, I think Cedar Fair is running the Ohio market extremely stupidly... Cedar Point is already at the top of the Midwest thrill market, so any thrill ride addition at Kings Island only adds to the competition between the parks, not even drawing many guests for Kings Island's local market. The local Thrill market is depleted, and has been for quite some time. The family market (local, state, and country) is pretty much wide open. Neither Paramount nor Cedar Fair seem to understand. Just my two cents. -

Holiday World... New Coaster?
Coney Islander replied to Coney Islander's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
I have a question, myself. Since The Voyage is supported entirely with steel, will its life span be more comparative to a steel coaster, or a wooden one? -
The World's Six Worst Theme Parks
Coney Islander replied to The Interpreter's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
These parks can't be THAT bad. They're making money, aren't they? Well, not Dubailand. Anyone heard anything about Dubailand, recently? Last I heard, construction had stopped, but, according to wikipedia, the deadlines have just been pushed back. Dubailand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In my opinion, this was a bad idea to begin with. I understand what they were thinking, wanting to build a 'Disney World of Eurasia', a park that everyone in the Europe dreams to visit. But, in The Middle East? The bad reputation of this sub continent will keep people away. -
Statistics can be unexpected. I read this a while back in a 'Popular Science' magazine. Around 180 people die a year, while pouring orange juice. The number of people who die pouring apple juice is quite smaller, around 110. While shark attacks, on average, claim 60 lives. Edit: These are approximate numbers. The article is from an old issue, 2006 or 2007.

^ While Loch Ness Monster is still operating, and is 9 years older than Vortex. I'd say Vortex should have at least 9 more years. Arrow Megaloopers really don't have that bad a service life, no matter what any company wants to think. The same can not be said about Arrow Suspended Coasters...

Firehawk's line is normally double The Beast's. The Beast's line is normally close to Diamondback's On Sunday evening with good weather, I'd expect- Firehawk: 50 to 70 Minutes, The Beast: 25 to 35 Minutes, Diamondback: 20 to 30 Minutes. And you've got to try Adventure Express, at night. *I* actually enjoy it more than any Beast night ride.

My first Coney trip of the season was last Monday! A great amount has changed. Pros 1. The new Wallenda Family thrill show was awesome! About six performances a day, and each of them were very exciting and fun to watch. This show is done for the year, but I wouldn't be surprised about its return, sometime in the near future. 2. Sharp new Pepsi Python paint job. Orange. 3. Incredible landscaping, as always. Anyone who visits Coney Island and does not walk through 'the grove', past the rides section is truly missing out. Make sure you check out the flood chart, and the original entrance. And if you have the time, I suggest walking along the Ohio riverbanks. Beautiful... 4. The Frog Hopper is fixed! For 2 or 3 seasons, something had been wrong with the frog hopper's machinery... Extremely rough and bumpy. Now, the machinery is fixed, and the ride is just as fun as its installation year. If you visit, make sure you try it out. Wooden coaster styled air time, on a Flat Ride! 5. Patriotic streamers and flags all throughout the park, commemorating the Forth of July. 6. Temporary maximum age limit removed from the Silver Bullet- In pool slide. Last year, the ending pad got torn really bad and had to be replaced, so for most of the season adults couldn't ride. Now there's a new pad, so adults can ride, again. It sure does pack quite a punch. 7. Three different live shows. And many more show times than ever before. Cons 1. The water spouts / bumps at the end of Pipeline Plunge are covered up. Still an OK slide, but not nearly as fun, with the 'surprise' finale covered up. 2. Some of Cyclone's sprayers aren't working... Probably just an oversight. Most adults don't have the courage to ride such a back/ heel shattering slide! (Ouch! The bumps are horrible... I never ride, unless I use my hands as brakes and keep the speed bearable) 3. The playground on the former 'Coney Mining Town' location is gone, again. The same playground had to be removed for the original 'Coney Mining Town' construction, was rebuilt for the 2009 season, and is now gone, again. I'm expecting a new pay attraction for next season. 4. The puppet shows aren't going on, but I don't believe they had been going on last year, either.

New Area for Holiday World 2011?
Coney Islander replied to FOFreak's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Also see- Holiday World... New Coaster? - Kings Island Central Forums yes, I know, Christmas. But could this mean a Christmas coaster announcment that day? Kind of odd to post that in the middle of May. Very peculiar... -
Agreed. The average person over the age of 40 does not want an extreme experience. And still Cedar Fair and Six Flags continue to pile on the coasters... Nowadays, only the younger members of my family go to Kings Island. Though we do have big family outings at Coney Island, every so often. And what a blast they are!

We always try to enjoy his 'presents.' Whenever we don't, he acts as if we've hurt his feelings! The same way people act, whenever they feel someone didn't like a gift of theirs.

And small cats are very invasive species. Once a population starts, this population is extremely hard to remove, especially with all the cat lovers out there who raise hell when a cat is killed, even for the reason of protecting vulnerable island species. Small cats have meant the extinction of hundreds of bird species... Its not that I dislike cats. We own a British Bombay cat named Al. The nicest and most adorable creature you'll ever see. Nevertheless, he is indeed a killing machine. 2 or 3 small animals a week... And he's declawed!

I remember a certain day a few years ago in which a deer was running loose in Coney Island. Jumping over fences, overturning stalls, and whatnot. After about an hour, they had the animal subdued. I was not actually there, but my grandmother swims at Sunlite Pool, three or four times a week, and has many, many stories.

New profile status. Maybe a hint toward something to come? Either way, it couldn't be truer...

Coney Island- Dreaming of Flats?
Coney Islander replied to Coney Islander's topic in Coney Island Central
^ Thats great news! My mother's favorite Kings Island ride used to be the Flying Scooters. And, in a matter of fact, she hasn't made a Kings Island visit ever since their removal. __________ Also, I have a question about Coney that I've been meaning to get out. The more rides Coney has, the more money has to be spent on workers. Because of this, I have been under the impression Coney has reached a max in size, and the park will decrease in profitability every time a new ride is added, and another is not removed. It sure seems like it, as the last three attractions have meant the removal of others... All three rides, I much enjoyed. So is this true? Has Coney reached its max in size? (At least for now...?) And on a side note, I believe the Wallenda Family Thrill Show has the ability do wonders for Coney, attendance wise... As long as it is marketed correctly. Maybe this year's was a test trial for more extensive things to come? I sure hope so. -
King Cobra, to me, had the perfect color scheme. At least until the paint was chipping away in the later years. Though, Vortex's color scheme is pretty perfect as well... In my grandfather's words - "All colors are beautiful. The depth in their beauty depends on how they're used together."
