My guess, is that if you're spending $2,600 on a carnival game to win a $100 XBox kinect, you don't have much of a life savings nest egg built up. On a side note, many would be surprised how few a % of people over the age of 30 couldn't scratch up $1000 on short notice to cover an emergency expense. I remember seeing some 60 minutes (or perhaps another news magazine show) story off people looking for work and how some had tapped into their 401(k). One person said they had exhausted their entire 401(k) and was still with out work. Biggest problem was that the person was in their late 50s, maybe even 60s and their value of their 401(k) prior to taking out early withdrawls was like $70,000. For those unaware, $70,000 isn't much of a retirment nest egg, at least that late in one's working career. I'm close to 30 and I rarely have over 1000 in my savings. Its just hard to save up sometimes with my mortgage, 2 car payments, and various other bills. I haven't done it, but I've thought about it plenty of times to tap into our 401(k). Back on topic: I think this guy does have a serious problem, whether it's gambling or not. How do you not know when to draw the line and stop playing the game?? If I spend 20 dollars on a game, I felt like I have over done it. Maybe the banana was telling him to do it, I don't know. Haha Trust me, I know what its like to feel like every dollar coming in, is already going out for the next car payment, child care, mortgage, etc.. didn't mean to come off preachy. Financial discussions are often best for other boards Depending on which "financial guru" you listen to there are few thoughts on finances. The idea is that if you have credit card debt, then you truly have no savings. Dave Ramsey suggests you have $1000 in savings while Susie Orman says you should have 4-6 months of savings in the bank. For emergency funds, etc. They also suggest that if you pay off a credit card then take that extra money you spend each month on the paid off card and put it on the next card/debt you are paying. Other suggestions include paying off the debt with the highest interest rate while some believe you should pay off the largest or smallest debt. I do not claim to be a financial guy, but just thought I would throw in some helpful hints that helped me create my families debt/savings plan....

but my question to all of this, what could have been? SOB should have been good. But it felt like all of the bad that could have happened did happen. If the company would have kept the construction, if the lift hill didnt collapse during building, etc etc etc,,.,.

spent way too much time last night looking at this stuff online. But I did notice there is a parking survey being done for Kings Island... not sure if its the drive or not. Mason's agenda notes just said the Kings Island Parking Survey

That would be cool, nice little ride. Could the haunted theme be in reference to the Demon that used to run the land over there?

Where's the best place in the park to watch the fireworks?

I enjoy from the top of the ET -
but we can rebuild it. make it faster, stronger.... Bombay... you have crushed peoples souls on here. If SOB doesnt return what will they post about? Side note: this thread took less than 3 pages before someone honestly brought back the "they are going to rebuild SOB."

I thought the fast pass was when they left the little walk way between the exit and entrance ques open....

the blue is relaxing but something about the black makes the pool look deeper. Also, probably much easier to keep clean in the long run. The blue showed dirt, where I think the black will hide it a bit more. Plus, its not like they are ripping the fountains out.

those that know dont talk... those that talk dont know... so continue telling us all about which rides will be removed or which rides need the fast pass.... im interested
-
someone explain to me why they think its a good idea to rebuild SOB? Im trying to get my head wrapped around that idea... but i cant. Just cant. So instead of retracking/retrofitting the ride... they would tear it down and rebuild it exactly the same way, but smoother?

I think KI's hole is in the area of high capacity low impact family rides. Something that eats up a bunch of guests that can be enjoyable by both the old and very young. Im not sure KI has a coaster hole IMO. Invertigo is a cookie cutter ride and often has too long of a line forthe ride to be worth it so it is often looked over by GP and enthusiasts a like as a serious ride. What KI was lacking before Diamondback was a modern, large, high capacity, and fun for everyone roller coaster.Son of Beast was going to fill that role but we know how that turnedout and the closest thing we had to that description was The Beast and Flight of Fear which were both aging so Diamondback really filled the void for that role. Every Cedar Fair park except Michigan's Adventure and Kings Island have at least two major steel roller coaster that fit the categories above. Does Vortex count as a high capacity coaster? I know its not modern.

Good-Bye Coney? River Downs Racino Looming

Does that flooding mean no way a coaster could ever be put in? Are ther other parks that deal with constant flooding but have found a way to combat the cost problem? (No one word answers:) Maybe throw out an example please ) -
^^ I didnt know that was only around for part of 1 season... thought it was the coolest...

Dont be an >>.> Rides run hundred of patrons through a ride every day. Heavy trains rolling over wood and steel that sits out in the elements. Wind, rain, sunlight, etc. Rides sway. Rides bend. Bolts get pressure. Wood goes bad, steel gets fatigued. Things have to be replaced. Chains may need more grease and oil. Brake fins need to be replaced. No different than when a school bus driver checks every morning to make sure the lights on the bus work, the sign the mirrors and the brakes. I am assuming you make sure your tires are inflated every day on your car right? Why wouldnt these rides who make hundred if not thousands of people a week happy are safe?

Roller Coasters and Brain Damage

My dad has recently (in the last 2 years) had 3 heart stents, a minor heart attack, and a stroke. He would love to go to the park but he has said there is not much for him to do there. He was never big on roller coasters when he was young, they made him sick. I would love to take my parents with my wife and I when my baby comes but my wife is not a huge ride person either. She enjoys some thrills but enjoys shows and immerse style rides so much more. My mom is the real roller coaster fanatic and got my sister and I involved in them as well. Looks like I have something to pass on. But I wish the park would bring back shows and rides that are for the whole family. Last year the magic show was awesome. Went with the extended family and had a great time. Funny, kid friendly, etc. But what else was there? Pop song singers? eh. Boo blasters was a nice and fun ride, but where are the other rides for my dad? Maybe KI will turn the corner soon and offer more for everyone.

Roller Coasters and Brain Damage

You Only Live Once. Its the mantra of the youngins. Indyguy, I in no way wanted to imply I know more than your Neurologists. I just think its an interesting avenue for future research. The research is sort of slim. I am a Speech and Language Pathologist by trade and researcher for fun. I think this may be an interesting long term study as there has not been many studies done. And as a professional in the medical field (sort of) I agree 100% that if its safe for your doc then you should continue it -

It may not slow you down and it may not matter to you. But this may be a new field for research for TBI. -
Do we have data that shows FP showed an increase in in-park sales? We have a few anecdotal stories of people doing so. But it is very possible, that the cost to role out a data tracking system, to pay for the upkeep of said data tracking system, then to promote and install tracking system in a park wide system could have been very expensive. It could have showed where dollars are being spent. It could have caused many more headaches than it was worth. Fun perks could have worked like krogers does where it sends out a 50 cent coupon out after the massive amounts of dollars i spend on milk, but it didnt. Did they leave dollars on the table by this? maybe. Or is it possible that fun perks just wasnt what they wanted it to be. If the boss doesnt like what its doing, then its not going to work. Period. Sentence, Paragraph, page, chapter, book, series, anthology, etc.....

Roller Coasters and Brain Damage
shark6495 replied to shark6495's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Just a qualifier. TBI means Traumatic Brain Injury. TBI can happen from abrupt acceleration and negative acceleration (de-acceleration) along with sudden stops. Both forward and backwards. The brain makes contact with the skull usually in the frontal lobe (responsible for personality and pragmatic skills) and the occipital lobe in the back (vision, depth perception, etc). If the brain goes side to side it can hit the temporal areas of the brain which control our ability to create and interpret language. The ability to recall information and store information is usually done with the hippocampal area located in the inner part of the brain. So your ability to pass classes (regurgitate information) may not be sign of TBI. The inability to come up with words during conversations, the ability to think critically, ability to pick up small changes in emotions of others are better signs. Not saying anyone has a TBI, but just thought a quick reference would help. Research has shown that multiple head injuries (such as football) over time can lead to the same plaque build up we see in people with dementia.... Just throwing it out to see what people think. -
I have an uncle who did not let his daughters ride a roller coaster till after they were 16. One who just turned 16 has never ridden a roller coaster in her life. She lives about an hour or so from CP. Her mom is from down in this area near KI. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2796436/ http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089%2F08977150260337921 http://pro.sagepub.com/content/48/16/1973.short http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022510X11006782 I know this can be a "heady" conversation (pun intended). Depending on what the researchers looked at depends on their outcomes. It also goes back to previous conversations about SOB and asking what qualifies as a pre-existing condition. I linked to the articles and quoted from the abstracts. Feel free to read the entire articles to see how they analyzed the different variables. I do wonder though that if Coasters continue to try to break different "records" will we eventually be causing brain damage to our selves. It looked like most of the researchers looked at a person riding a coaster but not someone who marathons on coasters. One ride on Beast probably wouldnt do much damage, but what about a person who rides that ride 20 times in a day. Will the constant swishing of the brain back and forth in the skull cause any damage or sheering? What about I305? Caused people to black out? Lack of blood to the brain is as bad as too much blood pressure. What say you KIC? Where do we all fall on this? There is 30 years of research showing damage to footballers, but it appears there is only research for a few years in this.

Just a comment on the observations from reading all of your comments (a comment-ception maybe?), this coming from a guy who did not have a pass last season. People state they either didnt use it like they should have, never asked to use their cards to gain perks, stating the discounts didnt work, confusing, etc. And we are sad its going away? Sounds like a much easier system to use would be to have a flat rate discount for season pass holders... sort of like what they are doing for this year... Spending 30 dollars to get a free 3 dollar items is still a 10% discount....

I think if you are not fearful or at least thinking about it, you are living in a bubble. This day and age, you have to be vigilant. Does that mean you assume a bomb is on every corner, no. But you have to be on the look out for suspicious behavior. Be aware of your surroundings. So maybe not fearful is the right word, but I am vigilant. I wont let it cross into my ability to have fun. But you have to be careful. Not just for yourself but for others.

Universal, SeaWorld, and BGT tips
shark6495 replied to jcgoble3's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
totally worth a try. If anything, they may be able to put your name on the list and have something ready for you. The restaurant is worth it. 3 broom sticks, is that the one with the butterbeer bar? Or am I thinking of Hogsmeade? The one with the bar attached to it, seemed great for getting a drink, but the food didnt look like a great sitdown restaurant....
