I was at the park the other day and saw that all Paramount items marked down 70%. Also I saw anything with Tomber Rider The Ride is 70%, Top Gun is 60% and THE ITALIAN JOB: Stunt Track 60%.

Does anyone else think these three rides will get new names next year?

Never once has Kinzel been quoted as saying in the conference calls that he wants to extend the naming rights. Each ride has seperate licensing agreements each with its own amount of time. Scooby Doo and the Haunted Castle has its own licensing agreements through Sally Dark rides who refurbished and rethemed the ride in 2003. The Nick Universe rights were intially agreed to be licensed for 4 years and Kinzel has yet to give an answer in the conference calls as to what is happening with those. He has been quoted as saying its still an avenue they're pursuing but haven't come to an agreement or decision yet.

And meanwhile, Viacom, the owner of the Nick marks, has been licensing them to other parks, including "The Park at MOA" at Mall of America, where Camp Snoopy used to prevail and Cedar Fair used to manage:

It is thought by many that Viacom did this in order to extract higher licensing fees from Cedar Fair, and to make clear that it is not beholden to the now owner of the US theme parks it used to own.

^That makes me think of something...

For the people that are well-versed on KI history, has the park done better being owned by media companies or entertainment (strictly amusement park) companies? I know it sounds dumb, but it just dawned on me that's a big difference about Cedar Fair owning it...not a media company.

I have seen some Top Gun shirts that just said "Kings Island," sans Paramount, on them. Did they apply to the sale?

(If I had to guess at my own question, I'd guess yes...)

Yes, those shirts were included in the sale as well. I posted this in another thread......thats why I found it significant. Despite what Beast1979 says, I personally see those particular attractions with different names next season.....thats certainly the rumor going around the Park right now. Guess time will tell.

^ Even though it makes absolutely no sense to spend tons of money renaming and retheming rides 4 years before you have to. Check back in 2010!

Do you actually think they are going to RE-THEME this things? Of course not! All it'll be is a name change and sign change. Aside from the huge Italian Job billboard and the movie in Tomb Raider, name the stuff that would have to be changed in order to accomodate a new name? Nothing. Its not like they are gonna sink mad cash into re-theming and re-inventing these things. Like many others have said the ONLY thing Kinzel has expressed an interest in is the NICK rights. If you can provide some proof or something to back up where he has stated they want to extend the naming rights for the Paramount branded attractions, terriffic! Until then, it would appear as if name changes on not so far away.

Depending on how their negotiations are with with each licensing agreement they may have to spend money re-naming things soon. Keep in mind Beast1979 didn't even know the correct facts about how the licensing agreements work and has consistently shown he has no inside info about the situation.

Actually, they are liquidating anything and everything that says "Paramount" on it. I think it is 70% off, or rather that is what we got when we made a few minor purchases on Sunday.

I don't think it has anything to do with specific rides, just the old Paramount King's Island merchandise that wasn't sold out in previous years.

Also, I think I saw Winterfest merchandise at 75% off.

You are correct that ALL Paramount merchandise is heavily discounted. Next time, please go and check out Emporium. There are signs that SPECIFICALLY state that Italian Job, Top Gun and Tomb Raider merchandise is also marked down......and these are pieces of product that say Kings Island and NOT PARAMOUNT's Kings Island.

You see, this is an argument that we are NOT qualified to have since we don't know the actual terms of the licensing agreement. I think it goes on for like 10 year (after the purchase) however not using them now may or may not save CF any money... we simply don't know. I can certainly say that if CF isn't getting something specific out of changing the names, I doubt they'd pay the money right now to do so.

Because, as BoddaH pointed out, no one outside the parties involved knows whether or not money has to change hands if the rights are used, or even who pays whom. Had I been negotiating the purchase for Cedar Fair, I'd have insisted that CBS and/or Viacom pay Cedar Fair if Cedar Fair was to continue to, in effect, advertise CBS/Viacom products (other than Nick). I also would have insisted that CBS/Viacom pay any removal costs, as they were the ones who had installed such usage. I truly do not think the park reaps ANY benefit from use of the Paramount properties other than Nick. I do believe that CBS/Viacom does benefit from that usage.

Then again, Cedar Fair wanted Paramount Parks so badly, who knows what they may have agreed to.

Then there is the simple matter that the new owner wants to remove all vestiges of the last owner. That's pretty normal in most transactions. Macy*s and Marshall Field, The May Company comes immediately to mind.

^Excellent point.

Also, even when KI was under Viacom/CBS, after a ride’s first couple of years of operation, they would reduce prices on the merchandise that was associated with the rides opening and popularity when it first opened. I remember a few years after TRTR opened I got a very good deal on a couple of TRTR polo shirts and even a FO polo shirt that I was able to wear in the next few years once I worked my up to a manager. Maybe CF is trying to clear this stock out for the future. Let’s be honest with everything that is happening to TRTR, they probably want to get rid of the merchandise while they still can. IJST has lost it’s luster that it had when it opened, scratch that, never had it’s luster that it was promised with the effects really never being completed. So it makes sense that over 2 years later trying to clear that stock out as it seems as though it’s popularity with guests seems to be decreasing.

I think there just trying to liquify the Paramount merchendise so they can start selling plain-old KI merchendice, insted of PKI stuff.

It all sounds nice and a good theory except.....A LOT of this merchandise has NO Paramount on it anywhere........it already says plain-old Kings Island on it. None the less, guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens next year. I think people are putting WAY more into renaming these rides than what will really happen. Its not like they have to re-theme them.....just a new name. Like someone else said in another post, I didn't know shipping containers specifically belonged to Paramount :-)

I believe that it is an intelligent and practical decision to liquidate the "Paramount" merchandise as Paramount no longer owns the parks.

Again, the merchandise in question in NO way says ANYTHING about Paramount. If these ride names were meant to be around for a few more years, I highly doubt you would see the product marked down so drastically at this point. The Paramount branded merchandise has been on sale since the beginning of the season.....it was only very recently that the IJ, Tomb Raider and Top Gun Kings Island branded merchandise got reduced.
