The Cyclones were cool to meet and very nice guys. Remember, they're playing their arch rivals the Dayton Bombers on wendsday and are currently in first place. Woot! Go Cyclones! I think had they held the event on a saturday, a much warmer saturday like the day before, when there are plenty of people going around fountain square and such, the event would have been more successful. Miami of Ohio, like most universities of their size, have more than one sports team that uses the general school mascots name. The Redhawks hockey team is pretty well known for being a decent time, although they did lose to Michigan 4-0 in front of a sold out home crowd last Friday. They tried to start one at Marshall, but all that happened was a hockey club was started. Meaning, you could use the name, but you bought all of your own equipment. You got the semi-pro Cyclones downtown, and various junior and amatuer teams spread throughout the city, one of the most notable teams is the Cincinnati Jr. Cyclones who played at the Gardens last year and are now the Queen City Steam at Sport's Plus. I still think the city could support two teams just as it once did if we got an AHL team back, the cyclones attendance seems to be getting better. Avatar Posted February 14, 2008 Share Posted February 14, 2008 Actually Cincinnati has a pretty good youth hockey through high school programs with a pretty good amount of players. Also a collage sports program that is not financed by the school is considered to be a club program. Now Miami of Ohio is a Division 1 hockey program, they recruit internationally and are a real treat to watch in person. The last time I watched a Miami of Ohio hockey game in person they where still known as the Redskins, in fact I still have an old game worn jersey from the team with the old logo on it. Gordon Bombay Posted February 14, 2008 Share Posted February 14, 2008 My dad used to have season tickets back when they were the Redskins, I spent so many saturday nights as a kid going to old Goggin then free skating afterwards. Now they have a new, very nice arena. Here at Ohio we have a club team that plays in this rickety old place that makes Hara Arena look nice, most games sell out and the team is usually pretty good. I know the rink you are talking about as I have been there too, in fact I have been in most rinks here in the Midwest. I think the coldest was the semi outdoor ice rink in Hamilton Ohio, in fact at the time I was there they used chain link fence around the uper boards instead of Plexiglas. My dad and I used to go skating there after dinner on saturdays in the winter back when I played hockey and was practicing. Spent lots of time there, was very sad to see them tear it down to make room for the Miami University Hamilton campus. This is how it looked in February 2007 before they tore it down almost a year ago... My High School used to play their home games here before moving to Goggin up in Oxford in 2006 and they were really the last tenants. So many memories from that place, was sad to see it go. On the topic of hockey history in Cincinnati, you can not go away without a mention of the three staples that were. We start off with the Mohawks, IHL gods with 5 strait championships. (I went to 1 game with my dad when I was a kid in 1957.) Second, the Buffalo Sabers farm team, the Swords with Dastardly Rick Dudley and Ray "Spider" McKay from 1971-1974. (Season ticket holder). And finally The Stingers from 1975-1979, good fights...I mean hockey. Still a good show all around. I still go to Cyclones games here and there, but it's just not the same. p.s. Wow Gordon that picture brings a tear to my eye. I haven't seen that place in years, in fact, I thought they ripped that out years ago. Thank you for that picture. That’s the one I was talking about, I did not know they tore it down sorry to see it go, but in truth in today’s time I really disliked the conditions there for organized hockey above b level hockey. I never did the summer hockey camp but from 3rd grade until 6th grade I used to go to tuesday night hockey camp at the Goggin practice rink until I started playing reguarly at Northlands. I'll have to dig up some photos when I go home this weekend of me playing at old Goggin. There was also a time when the Cyclones used to do a youth outreach thing called "The Concrete Clones" where they would set up mini rinks in a parking lot and you could sing up for clinics and play scrimages and run drills with them. When I was 12 a player named Doug Macdonald took a shoot and hit me in the face sending me to the hospital and giving me a black eye. Not to mention the team was not any where near NHL caliber both with players and coaching. The marketing department was even worse. They had a good thing going right where they were, but did not capitalize. I think it would have been more money than most people think if they would have went major. All new staff and marketing, and not to mention they would have had to build a new arena by the mid 90's. I would have done any thing to have NHL in this town, including voting yes on a tax increase so the county could build a new arena. (I voted no on the one for Baseball and Football). I think if we had the Cyclones marketing, with the caliber of play with the Tigers, (minus goaltending) we would have had a shot at an NHL team. Well there still is hope, or Columbus. My dad had bought season tickets for me and him, it's a shame they didn't make it. I'd still love to see AHL hockey at the Gardens yet again. A persons a&& is an Interpretive matter. For example: If an individual is wearing contacts, does it help them see where they are going? Or does it help them wee where they are going? In the last years of the Ducks they really had that place cleaned up nice with the awesome history museum and all. The Ducks were not moved to Albany and are not the same team as the River Rats. In fact, the Ducks used to play the River Rats. The reason why the team disbanded was because Anaheim chose to end their affiliation with the Cincinnati franchise. Upon doing so, Pete Robinson (owner of the Gardens and the Ducks) had the intellectual rights to a team, but they wouldn't be the Mighty Ducks. When the affiliation ended, they voluntarily disbanded operations for a season and attempted to resurrect the same team under the name the Cincinnati Railraiders. As stated, they did not reach the season tickets expectations so the Gardens and the AHL mutually agreed to abandon the project. It was later reported that the AHL had approved the team being sold and relocated to Windsor, ON, CA, but the deal fell through.
