Well they basically are there all day.....they do all the running for the mech dept. They get ice for the merch carts, they bring the stores racks and gondolas......just stuff like that

May have been true in the Paramount Parks days, but I can assure you that is NOT true now. Under Cedar Fair, everyone works, or they don't have a job very long.

Well I thought that after my first season at Coney, I would never be back as a worker. Little did I know that I would be there for a total of six years, and possibly a seventh this spring! Yes, the pay is bad, but pay isn`t everything. I genuinely have a fun time in the rides department at Coney. I looked forward to going into work each day. The paycheck was a nice bonus. Its kind of hard to explain.

^ Agreed and I used to work at Wyandot Lake here in columbus and I gotta say id rather just go to an amusment park every once in awhile and really enjoy it than have to go every day and work. But if I did get a job it would def have to be in rides.

Last August was when I first started at Kings Island, and I loved it! You'll get to meet a lot of new people, including amazing co-workers and guests. I love my job and I love helping people..

So I take it that you live in dayton as well 2BMasterofK.I._29? Everyone says im crazy for driving down there to work... but its not really that far and gas doesn't really bother me.. I drive a SUV that gets 18MPG on the highway! :/.

KI is one of those jobs you look forward to....you have a lot of fun and your paycheck is just like a little bouns.....hard to explain

You handle every necessary function of the Merchandise Department. You work pre, during, and post season. The job requires being at least 18 years of age. You work all Merchandise Shops in the entire park. During the preseason, the job requires assisting in setting up all of the shops. You paint lockers that need it, you reassemble and then place all locks back on locker doors. In some cases you put on the doors. You prepare all strollers, wheelchairs and ecv's for operation. Powerwashing the locker areas in necessary, as well as maybe having to powerwash near the main entrance. If the park recieves new strollers or etc. Merch. Maint assemble them. Any new cabinets that go up in the shops are assembled my this dept. as well. The job during park operation includes Quality Guest Assistance, which is always #1. Cleaning and restacking of Strollers, and lining up wheelchairs and ecv's. If ecv's break down we have to go into the park and push them back to the front gate area. We are allowed to operate registers, and stock merchandise. If Guests lockers will not operate, it is our job to manually unlock the locker. Each member of Merch Maint is in a Supervisory position over Merch Shops and can fulfill this duty only if necessary. ( someone calling in for example, or a day of very high attendance) Merch. Maint associates also can drive through the park during times that the park is closed. This comes with a lot of responsibility and a good driving record. The park issues you a special license for this. You also assist in Warehouse deliveries, clearing and filling overstock trailers, and you learn to make fudge for the 2 shops that require it. Obviously, as the name indicates, general maintenance is required of the job title, such as painting, powerwashing, assembling, hanging signs, etc. Merch. Maint is usually always assigned a job at TimberWolf concerts. Part of this job requires walking around the park ( never alone ) and collecting money from the penny pinch machines, which you must take to the parks cash office. We also perform general maint. on the penny pinch machines come to think of it. And now we have to help run the photo booths for rides. If customers require riding in a rented wheelchair, or ecv out into the parking lot to leave for the day, etc, they must have an escort which is usually someone from Merch. Maint. The dept. also handles the storage of unused props and equipment from merchandise shops throughout the entire park ( including the waterpark ) You will always have a pager on you and can ( and will ) be paged from one side of the park to another at any given time. You are allowed to bring your own bicycle which you may ride behind the scenes from ( for example the frontgate to Boomerang Bay. ) When you have this job you are required to clock in at the Retail Sales Office, and you will spend a lot of your offtime ( if you have any ) in this office. So if someone has seen an associate in the office or in any office, this is probably when. Or they were probably paged to meet someone there. ( someone is probably an area manager or higher ) It is not because they are not working. You are always working while in Merch. Maint. Chances are if you are in this department you will be at the park for most of the day if not all during park operation on weekdays, and you will be at the park from open until around midnight on weekends.

I do it mainly to combat my extreme shyness. It has helped so far...and yes the check is a nice extra.

Hey, I naturally am a little shy as well. But once I go to work at Coney, that goes out the door! I love interacting with the guests. Especially when you have a kid that is terrified to ride the ride, but you assure them it`ll be fun. Then when they get off smiling and saying that was the best ride ever, you can`t help but smile and say "Have a nice day."

Merch Maintenance... have fun repairing those lockers and ECVs. Also, be nice to Michele and Karrie, because they are awesome. In fact, be overly nice to them. It always is a good idea to be nice to the bosses when a large part of one's day can be spent in the back of the Rock Shop / Attitudes / I haven't been to the park since I stopped working there in 2004.

One particular incident-this little girl about 3 I am guessing, came through the gate holding her teddy with this big smile on her face-walked straight up to me and gave me a big hug. After a very trying day, that made it worthwhile....

For those interested in getting a job, from a 5 year veteran of that park, here is my unbiased opinion.

Do it. Sure, the pay may not be great. My current job has better pay and better hours, but I still miss the days I could work at the park. The people you meet there are great, and you seriously will have a blast. Yes, the hours will be long some days, and you will have run ins with some troublesome guests, but those will improve your work and people skills.

My experience with the park spans two departments, rides and entertainment. The rides department was my first experience in the working world, and in those four years I went from a lowly bar checker on Flight of Fear, needing to be told how to do everything, to a supervisor on the worlds longest wooden rollercoaster. The people who worked with me guided me along to becoming a leader.

My fifth year came with a change. Due to my school's co-op program, I was required to take a job during the summer that fit with my major. That ended my run in the rides department. That summer was quite possibly the most boring I had in a long time. Going from the fun and sometimes hectic (BAFFD anyone?) job of a ride operator to a bland 9-5 type office job was quite a jump, and I often found myself longing for a day at the park working.

Of course, that couldn't keep me away from KI. That fall, I returned to the park as one of the many monsters of the new Halloween Haunt. Once again, I had a blast.My body hated me for jumping and running while staying in character for hours on end, but I didn't care. The adrenaline of scaring those guests kept me going, and I loved every minute of it.

Again, the pay is on the lower side. The job itself more than makes up for the lower pay. I am still planning on returning to Haunt next year, for now my sixth year working at the park in a row. I have had five great years working there, giving my all for my job, and I couldn't have had a better time.

Would working at the park earn enough to pay for three hours in gas? I live an hour and a half away, but if I would still make enough to pay for gas and have some left over, I would certainly consider it. I would LOVE to work at KI.

If I could predict the price of gasoline this summer, I'd be way too smart to waste my time posting here! Honestly, though, what do you drive, how many MPG does it get, and what is worth your while? Some people would pay to work at KI, others would gladly pay not to. It's very much a personal choice.

Last year I drove about 40 minutes each way and had to fill up my car once a week. I worked a lot of hours that summer, which I wouldn't have been able to get anywhere else, so I found that it was way worth it even after filling up as often as I did.

joey working at the park is a good job for all. I worked there for many years and loved it, especially back in the early 80's. Things have changed so much since then, maybe I should write a book on my life involment with Kings Island through out the years.

I have been volunteering down at KI for the past 6 or 7 years now after the regular season. I would love to work the Park during the regular season, but since I have a full time job that pays more than KI, I'll have to just work weekends. I don't do it for the money, I do it for the tickets for the following season.

I filled out the app for the graphic design internship yesterday. I really hope I get that position!!! =^) Ill be graduating this may with a degree in Graphic Design =^)
