That would be impossible to do since most of the shelters are "behind the scenes." "However, park maps do say that in cases of severe weather, instructions are supposed to be given over the park intercom." I wasn't there that night, but maybe someone who was can verify this. I know the park used to have an announcement that would play well before the storm hit that there was severe weather in the area and everyone should take shelter immediately. Any word on if anyone heard that announcement? If this is the only family complaining obviously the park did something right. I don't doubt that they were scared with what was going on, but given the stories/experiences I have read on this website of that evening, it sounds like the park handled the situation very well considering it is not a common occurence. hamoperator Posted June 9, 2009 Share Posted June 9, 2009 My family was there, and they did not hear any announcements or anyone speak of what to do, so they left the park and headed home, there wasn't no mass exodus so it was OK; I was at work and kept my own family up to date on what was going on. I don't think it is impossible to put icons on the map or signs in the park indicating a shelter is in place; even being behind the scenes (it's more like the all mighty dollar and lets take a chance one will not hit here). One has to take some responsibility for your own actions, know your surroundings at all times and use common sense. I heard the announcement that a storm was in the area. I heard it a couple times and before the announcement each time the intercom would play a beeping noise. That sounds pretty safe and organized to me. I was working that night and I did hear the announcement that a storm was in the area. I heard it a couple times and before the announcement each time the intercom would play a beeping noise. Channel 5 is the tabloid news of Cincinnati and ki has had a bad relationship with them for years not sure why but they did carry it over to GWL and they will seat out in Showcase's parking lot and listen to radio channels. I do understand why Mrs. Felix (awesome last name right?) would be angry, but, i disagree with her because there are PLENTY of places to get out of the weather, like que lines, restraunts, bathrooms, ampitheaters, changing rooms, etc. Last year, I was at boomerang bay with my family, when storms hit, for granted they were not tornados, but lighting and heavy rain. Oh, and guess what THEY MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT! We were about leave the park(of course i was throwing a HUGE fit)when a security gaurd grabbed us and put us in that little hospital building. We were standing there (My girlfriend, dad, mom, brother, and I) and i kind of noticed that there was a pattern of people being grabbed (people with children, Elderly, and handicapped) but it was just an observation. SO, in theory she just needs to get over it, find cover, and not leave cause really, you paid $105.96 (her, her husband, and 2 neices) to go. PPFT, I have coupons so i save $20 on each person! RingMaster Posted June 9, 2009 Share Posted June 9, 2009 Considering the amount of employees that risk their lives trying to get guests out of harm's way and into shelter (it was apparently a running joke that there would be an employee every 50 yards running about grabbing guests), and the fact that over 75 people were brought into a behind-the-scenes location near SDATHC (one of which was a lost four-year-old who, instead of giving him a wet raincoat, gave him my fleece jacket to help him warm up), I kinda feel insulted to hear people complain about NOT finding shelter and somehow being treated poorly by being hoarded outside. They (Channel 5) most likely left out the part where once the storm ended they tried to get everyone out before the next storm hit so they could get home to their families. That's basically the two things running through everyone's minds as soon as a storm hits; one is, "We gotta find shelter fast!", and the other is "I hope said family member is okay at home." I'm sorry but Mrs. Felix needs to try to put herself in the shoes of Kings Island. You try getting 10,000+ guests into certain shelters around the park with sometimes not even 1/5 of that number of employees. I was not there that night but what I have heard so far from MANY people, I believe Kings Island did the best that they could. Just like what MarketingExpress said, this isn't a common occurence in this area, tornadoes don't get this close to the park everyday nor do they every year for that matter. Like you said hamoperator, you need to know your surroundings, if there is a tornado warning, common sense in this situation is NOT to stand under the awning at the front entrance. If you hear a tornado warning or even just a severe thunderstorm warning, it is said to always take shelter in a sturdy structure which Kings Island has MANY, and there are alot of them right there close to the entrance. I'm sorry but I think people just lose their minds when it comes to some things like this. They think that somebody HAS to take care of THEM all the time which is NOT true. (Sorry for the all caps, just trying to make a point) Kudos to all of the employees at Kings Island for doing the best job that they could in this situation and also kudos to those guests who listened to those employees and also doing what you needed to on your own to get to shelter in the park. Of course she is going to only mention what helps her. Why would she, oh I dont know, tell the truth? Oh wait, that would ruin her chances of a big fat load of money coming from KI to her. And Channel 5, at one point (long time ago,) was a respected news organization, but all you have to do is look at the ratings and you will notice that its junk. Plain and simple. Would not surprise me one bit. Unfortunately there are many people now that will do anything to get some extra money. Like someone said the intercoms aren't that loud, but I think that lady was overreacting because its kind of common sense if there's a severe thunder storm or whatever just go to one of the many buildings to take shelter and if there was a tornado very close i guarantee that would make sure everybody had specific instructions. I would like to think the Mason courts are deciding cases based on the evidence and the law. Also, most cases never go to court, but are settled. (Can't recall if he got struck by lighting or if it was lighting out and the guy got mad cause he thought the park itself did a poor job of warning people on such an event) Anyone else help to clear up this story?
