I know there was a thread about this, titled "Six Flags Magic Mountain to take Crown" or something, but I couldn't find it. And besides, it isn't really taking the crown, it's just tying with a big, fat 17 coasters!

Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia will add a kiddie coaster in summer 2010 called Mr. Six’s DanceCoaster, themed to the frenetically dancing senior citizen who serves as a spokes-character for the amusement park chain.

Magic Mountain’s 17th coaster moves the California amusement park into a tie with Ohio’s Cedar Point for the coveted title of “roller coaster capital of the world,” according to Roller Coaster Database.

...

At 28 feet tall and with a top speed of 21 mph, the family coaster certainly won’t set any records or wow hard-core enthusiasts. The black, white and red coaster trains will be themed to look like a pair of dancing shoes.

Magic Mountain for this addition will recycle the Vekoma junior coaster, which was known as Road Runner Express at the now-shuttered Six Flags New Orleans before being relocated to Magic Mountain, according to Ultimate Roller Coaster.

Interesting, the article also notes:

The layout of Magic Mountain’s Mr. Six coaster will be identical to Disneyland’s Gadget Go-Coaster, which opened in Toontown in 1993, according to Roller Coaster Database.

Of course, the cloning is doubtlessly not going to be noticed, but it's interesting that this same situation (just with different parks) caused one of the more controversial points of the Demon Drop situation - a park advertising a hand-me-down as new, though an exact replica of it debuted years and years earlier at a nearby park. Just funny, I suppose!

And luckily, unlike it's New Orleans incarnation, this new version will be in a nice, forested park with a bright, chipper sky... And better yet, no child will be left to sit by his or her self as they were at New Orleans! ;)

I do like how alot of parks have put in coasters like this, another one that comes to mind is at Busch Gardens Williamsburg when I was there over the summer. This is one area in my opinion where Cedar Point really lacks. I mean they do have Jr Gemini and Woodstock's Express but that is it. Compare this to Kings Island for example with a greater variety of coasters for kids, not only in numbers but types ie. wooden, suspended, steel.

Well Cedar Point has a clone of this coaster, Woodstock Express is a Vekoma Roller Skater, I'm pretty sure... But yes they do need another kiddie coaster.

Looks like they stole and Photoshopped the RCDB/SFNO.com photo.

I'm guessing (though I don't know) that that image is probably "official" and goes with the Magic Mountain press release. I can't see the LA times going to such trouble to change an image, photoshop in people, add a blue sky, etc... If there were no official images and it was up to the LA Times to find one, they'd probably a) put in a photo of a ride clearly not related to the future Mr. Six ride, or B) use an image of the ride from when it operated at New Orleans.

You must admit, it's very funny to see the coaster sitting in a beautiful green glen in the middle of what appears to be a city park, bright sky with gentle, rolling clouds... I'm sure many ride promotional photos have this sort of treatment, but this is the first time I've really looked and noticed. Then to look at the original, cloudy day, electrical poles all over the background, grimy carnival rides, dead grass and dirt/gravel, etc. Hahha. B)

Yeah, I meant SFMM stole it and edited it. Look at the people on the train. It's the SAME photo as RCDB.

Oh right. Hahha. Yeah that's true. Except, of course, that everyone who was sitting alone in New Orleans was given a friend for Magic Mountain. :P

Ghoster Coaster? In all honesty, I'd take a Dance Coaster over a Flight Deck any day...

Especially when the trains are shoes. Clever!

Haha wow that's hilarious. I had to look again to see that. I can just picture the park saying "This ride is fun! Look at all the people enjoying themselves!"

I wonder if CP decided to secretly add a kiddie coatser this offseason? Terpy said that's what he'd do, so it is logical...

Mr. Terpy said he would put in TWO of them.

Terpy, who has reasons for most of what he says...gee, wonder why he said back then...

This is good because it creates a new family ride but it is nothing special seeing that the coaster is 17 years old. But then they are recycling a coaster which is good and saves them a lot of money. I like "Mr. Six Pandemonium" better for a Mr. Six themed ride but I guess we will have to live with this.

Quick CP! Spend some money on another small kiddie coaster! Keep the Crown!

The quote "It's about quality, not quantity" applies here.

I think CP offers a good chunk of both.

But SFMM? Sure, their quantity is fine. I just don't see much quality with them. That's just me.

Ouch, I bet Cedar Point is so scared....Maybe they should just not open this season so they can count the amount of Golden Tickets again.

What makes some thing coasters and other things not?

I was in San Antonio in the Fall and rode Journey to Atlants, which is credited as a "Water Coaster" - though Sea World's website points out it has elements of both. Shoot the Rapids has two chain powered lift hills, watching the POV it feels coasterish. Will CP reclaim sole ownership of the title by proclaiming STR as a waster coaster? Will sites like RCDB claim it for them?

just thinking out loud........

Doubtful. If Cedar Point claims Shoot the Rapids as a coaster, it will be highly disputed. Like I said earlier, no one cares if Kings Island claims Avatar as a coaster because it doesn't change their marketing. If Cedar Point and Kings Island were tied for most coasters, Avatar would certainly be highly disputed and likely, found to not count. Water coasters don't officially count, though I can certainly see that changing - water coasters are much different creatures than they used to be - we're not talking about a flume ride with a guide rail on the drop. We're talking about the Journey to Atlantises and the Ripsaw Falls and such that have extensive portions that fit the very definition of a roller coaster.

I would count Shoot the Rapids as a coaster for sure. It has track like a coaster. It's not powered (like Avatar), well except the lift hill... I think Cedar Point should count it as a coaster. I guess that means Pilgrim's Plunge could be counted as one too.

So by your logic, every log flume in the world should be counted as a roller coaster? STR has two drops and runs through a water trough the rest of the ride. Sounds like a log flume to me.
