Kings Island's body slides (where this rule is enforced) have been there since the waterpark first opened. Fungus is a risk, but it can be mitigated with good hygiene and by using footwear in shower/changing areas. Parasite infections are exceedingly unlikely at a waterpark with property treated water and hard surfaces. Beaches, even on the ocean, are much more worrisome in this regard. By the way, you forgot to mention HPV (causing plantar warts). The risk seems to be low for most people, especially when taking precautions like using footwear in the most high-risk areas. Supposedly, most adults are already immune. Those worried should simply avoid going barefoot in public places. The cleanliness of the park has a substantial effect on the risk of any infection. Severely overcrowded parks (like KI's Soak City) are a lot more worrisome than parks with a reasonable attendance limit that get sanitized nightly (like Disney's waterparks or Great Wolf Lodge). The last time I was at KI's Soak City, the overpowering smell of disinfection byproducts ("chlorine smell") was enough to make me get out of there quickly. They hurt like crap to stand on and they make the bottoms of your feet look like waffles. We spent the first day in the park and the second day at the water park. It was still Boomerang Bay at the time. It rained right while we were leaving. Now, the procedure is that he must get a device for them, IIRC "Rivets", from Guest Services, or he will not be allowed to ride such an attraction. Is anyone else getting concerned that the water temperature is going to be frigid for Memorial day weekend? The forecast doesn't look very promising for the sun to warm up the water. I have one, doing the body board/wave/surf board ride.... My water park memories, however, are filled with Surf Cincinnati and the Beach.... Not to high-jack the thread but the Inter-tube rapids ride at Surf Cincinnati will be my #1 best memory maker second only to the water slides that ran parallel to the lazy river at Surf... I would think that they would use a day with low attendance to allow their lifeguards to gain some experience in a less overwhelming environment rather than just closing the waterpark.
