thedevariouseffect
Standards now require however this was built prior It's somewhat harsh but the way the individual worded it almost makes it seem as if they just let it go Willy nilly.. By the time e stop was pressed..I guarantee park op, maintenance, and first aid were all contacted and headed on scene
The Interpreter
And probably someone called and woke up Duffield!
MantisMan
Ironically, Dave Althoff, Jr., just posted elsewhere that standards now require that e-stops on rides manufactured after June 2014 stop all hazardous ride movement at once, not just cut power. Pretty much what I just said. Amazed that it just recently became a standard......should be a no-brainer.

Diamondback96
*Double post deleted* Wut? Caused that? The forum software probably really liked your post. So what would that mean for coasters? Does a train going around the track until the next set of brakes not count as hazardous movement?
TTD-120-420
Story is now on a popular sister site of Gawker and Deadspin. http://gizmodo.com/cable-snaps-on-6o-mph-amusement-park-ride-1611732268?utm_campaign=socialflow_gizmodo_facebook&utm_source=gizmodo_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow
jcgoble3
^ And the second comment is an RCT screenshot of an unfinished coaster sending its cars flying through the air. I'm not sure whether to laugh or shake my head.

The Interpreter
A well prepared park statement could have averted much of this. But, no....
malem
^ The media would seek accounts from spectators regardless of the PR statement. It's more sensational that way. What was the media statement missing? It seemed to be fairly complete, for what could be known for certain in the initial hours of the investigation. The Interpreter
Oh, baloney. You don't even know whether those injured were riders, spectators or some combination. Nor the nature of any injuries.

jcgoble3
^ The source for that blurb is USA Today, found here: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/07/27/ohio-amusement-park-ride-cable-snaps/13238009/ That article is much more well-written. The Daily Beast misinterpreted a few things in that article.
The Interpreter
You think? Why bother rewriting an article when you don't know what you are writing about?

"...Instead of stopping the Skyhawk ride...." http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2014/07/27/two-hurt-when-ohio-theme-park-ride-snaps.html Sigh They also called it Cedar Pointe. There is apparently a ride called The Skyhawk.
Existential
:Never rode this ride at Cedar Point or Dollywood. Unfortunate accident...need more info. I guess I'm not the news.
vortexfan
The media constantly screws up amusement park info & creates drama when there is none. Case in point: The other night Disney California Adventure was mentioned on one of the local news stations in Toronto. Why? Because California' Screamin' stopped on one of the lift hills. Riders needed to be evacuated and walk down the steps. The horror.
upstop
I make my living off the evening news. Just give me something-something I can use. People love it when you lose, They love dirty laundry... Well I could have been an actor, but I wound up here, I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear, come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry... kick em when they're up, kick em when they're down, kick em when they're up, kick em all around. shark6495
I will say this, if you wonder why these things get publicised (now mind you a cable breaking is a serious news story) its because people talk about it. Generates clicks. If you dont want these things publicised quit clicking on them and quit talking about them...
Creed Bratton
I love how I'm still reading reports that a man broke a leg and another was really injured. But per the park: "At approximately 10 p.m., a cable on one of the Skyhawk swing ride's carriages disconnected. The ride's crew immediately shut down the ride and notified the park's emergency personnel. The cable came in contact with two guests. One was treated and released at the scene. As a precaution, the other was transported to a local hospital for evaluation." http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2014/07/witness_to_skyhawk_accident_at.html
shark6495
The park really does need to release more. http://www.wkyc.com/story/news/local/northeast-ohio/2014/07/27/two-injured-when-cedar-point-ride-cable-snaps/13235979/ Sigh.
