SFMM Retires X2

Featured Replies

"After almost 20 years, we have decided to permanently retire X2.

Since X2 opened in 2008, it has welcomed more than 16 million guests and earned a passionate following among ride enthusiasts. We recognize the special place X2 holds in the coaster community, and we are grateful to our team members who operated and maintained it throughout its run."

It had to be done. It will be interesting to see how to they look to replace it. Magic Mountain isn’t the type of park I’d imagine that would let that area sit for too long like ours with Vortex.

I mean we didn't imagine that when they closed Vortex that they would be letting it sit empty for 7 years with still nothing in site well here we are

Disappointing, but not surprising. And not the first or even second major coaster I missed out on (I live closer to KI than any other park, and still completely missed out on SoB).

I really don't intend to go to Magic Mountain or Knotts in the short term, especially considering I have other places I want to check off, including in Texas, the East Pennsylvania/New Jersey area, and the Southeast (Carowinds/Over Georgia) region.

I'm somewhat of a coaster enthusiast, and I still have a lot to cover in America, so I plan around what happens to these parks.

I'll wait until they get a headliner to replace the head-basher.

X2 was my favorite coaster at SFMM. Close second is Tatsu. I first rode this coaster as X in 2004. I last rode it in 2013, so that I have no idea how this ride aged since. This was by far the most disorienting coaster I ever rode. I hate that there were injuries from this ride, however. This was the inevitable outcome.

I will genuinely miss this coaster. This was one of the most unique yet very enjoyable coaster for me. 2025 and 2026 has been disappointing year for all these closures of coasters.

A coworker asked me about it when he saw it on the news causing injuries. He knows that I am at parks a lot. I told him you can gauge its roughness by this one statement from me. "When my wife and I were out there, we rode it once and did not reride it." That told him everything he needed to know about the ride experience and why it was closed. As a gauge for others here, I would reride SOB on occasion when it was still around.

^ Was that X or X2?

We did back-to-back rides on X2 in 2024. It was "rough" but we did not consider it SoB rough.

I suppose it depends on what year for each ride.
