Paramount added

Although, the reality is that Cedar Fair does own Paramount Parks (they bought the entity, not just the assets). Viacom owns Paramount Studios, and CBS owns Paramount TV Production... I guess everyone can own a "Paramount" something biggrin.gif

They bought the entity, but the fact of the matter is that if they want to use that name after this season, they must make additional payments to the former owner...

I still do not see those payments being made unless it costs Cedar Fair less to proceed that way than to not license the rights and make whatever adjustments it would then have to make to signage, parks and business plans.

Here`s my theory. Since all the Paramount Parks will continue to be called Paramount throughout the rest of the season, there was no sense in switching signage and what not now. The bigger reason they probably switched it to say Paramount has to do with the website. They probably did not want to have to restructure the Paramount Parks website without the Paramount logo during the peak season. And since they didn`t want to do that, simply calling them out without the Paramount name could have caused confusion. So obviously, fixing the names on one map is easier than completely rebuilding five websites.

I don't get it. Why do so many people want Cedar Fair to drop the Paramount name and theming? If Cedar Fair can come in and do all the good things that everyone has said and still keep some of the good things that the Paramount parks already have, like some of the current paramount naming, etc... Then why not.

Who knows?! They may just be using it not to confuse people this year... or they maybe have other plans for the future. They did say they see PKI as a family park, maybe the Paramount theming and Nick is part of the future strategy.

Here's a question:

Did KINGS Dominion come from Kings Island as to say that they are related from long ago before paramount came into play. Might this work out the same with the paramount name as to say that they were related from long ago. But then again in they took the King out of each of them they would both sound pretty dumb. This is just a theory of mine. wink.gif

Yes, it was opened by the same company, KECO, a year later.

The original name for Kings Island came from the location of the park by Kings Mills. (Which is probably where Kings High School takes its name from). The Island portion of Kings Island pays homage to the tradition of Coney Island. When Taft was building Kings Island they held a name the park contest in which thousands of Cincinnatians took place. Some other names entered included Twin Oaks and Kings Mills Park. I used to know the name of the lady that sent in the Kings Island name, but I don`t remember it anymore.

KECO originated in 1984 when several executives from Taft Broadcasting`s theme park division bought out the theme park business to form their own company. (Kings Dominion was already built by this time, and it was so named because of the success that Taft had had at Kings Island). Some of the executives included Nelson Schwab III and Jack Rouse, who was in charge of the entertainment at all the Taft parks. Jack Rouse later went onto form his own firm in Cincinnati, Jack Rouse Associates. Which, ironically have still been involved at Kings Island as recently as last year in designing many of the WinterFest elements, as well as Bubba Gump`s Shrimp Shack.

Just a question cause Im ****ed off at the world right now:

Who cares? Its Cedar Fair, let em do whatever they want.

You miss the old Kings Island of yore. I see grief here. Honestly.

The five steps of grief:

1. Denial (it isn't happening....I don't care....that's where SOB TOM is right now...I think).

2 Anger (yep, we've seen it...I am FURIOUS with 'them' for selling to --KECO? Paramount? Great American Financial? Cedar Fair?)

3 Bargaining (Okay, Cedar Fair, I can put up with you if you just drop the Paramount's name and/or lower food prices and/or change the entertainment and/or add greeters to rides, etc.)

4 Depression (Okay, it's gone, my world has ended, I just don't know what to do...)

5. Acceptance (it's okay, I understand, I miss the old days, person, company, etc., but I accept it....)

The steps are NOT linear. One can get to bargaining and fall back into denial. It takes time. And sometimes some people never get over their grief...

And you may think it is silly to talk about grief in the sale of an amusement park, but to people who care very deeply about a place, the sale of a park can be nearly as difficult to deal with, if not as difficult to deal with, as the loss of a friend or relative.

That being said, let's put things into perspective. The park is still there. Many of the same people are still there. The future is ahead.

And as far as SOB_TOM's comment that Cedar Fair can do whatever they want? They can. They OWN the place. Understanding that is one step on the road to acceptance.

Who cares? I submit Tom, respectfully, that you do. If you didn't, you wouldn't be here to start with. Nor would any of the rest of us if we didn't care. At least some. Even AZ Kinda Guy admits he cares some. Otherwise, he couldN'T care less....but he says he could care less, so he cares some! smile.gif

That's also refered to as the Loss Curve so it is very well appropriate to some.

I don`t know about any mills. However, before Taft bought the land, it was home to some farmland. Some areas were more easily farmed than others due to the valleys. They bought land from realtor George Hinkel and individual farmers for a total of $3.2 million. That equates to about $2,000 an acre. They originally bought 1,600 acres. Today, the park is down to 773 acres, but that might be including the former campground site which is still owned by CBS/Great Wolf.

woofer.... wasn't the name (for the city) Kings Mills derive from an old powder mill that used to sit on the Kings Island property long before it's construction?

You refer, of course, to Kings Mills Ordnance Plant...which was used to produce ordnance many, many years ago. It was operated by Remington Arms Co. under the Peters Cartridge Co. name and was supported by commercial facilities owned by Peters.

Does anyone remember that KD was built and owned by Family Leisure, which was a joint venture of Taft and Kroger!! Eventually Kroger dropped out, Taft sold the parks to the management group then named KECO, Lindner bought KI, Great West Life bought the remaining portion of CW they didn't already own, and finally Paramount brought them all together again. I'm pretty happy with Paramount for bringing them back together!

As for the Paramount name, the contracts and deals made by all the theme parks are I am sure quite twisted in a legal mess. Look how H-B was in three different park chains at the same time, Six Flags, Paramount and Universal. As those contracts expired, they disappeared from those parks almost entirely. As far as the deal with KI and Coke, that deal is done, and new owners would have to abide by the terms of existing contracts or buy them out. The same goes for the Paramount name and the Paramount products already named on products. Will it be worth CF spending the money to buy those licenses out or use that money to put back into the parks. I'd rather see Top Gun named as such for years and a bigger staff to do guest service and clean up the park! I'm sure this acquisition will keep lawyers busy for quite a long time!

Then again, just to argue with myself, CF did rename the attractions at Geauga Lake. That may have been part of the business deal with Six Flags.

Forgive the misspellings and such...no time to proof!
