Disney World to raise ticket prices for 2nd time this year

ORLANDO, Florida (AP) - Walt Disney World is raising the price of a one-day, one-park ticket to $67 (euro52.), the company announced.

Disney does not release attendance figures and declined to comment Friday on why they raised ticket prices for the second time this year.

The $4 (euro3.10) increase, which includes entrance to all four theme parks, will go into effect Sunday.

When the park, owned by Walt Disney Co., raised its price from $59.75 to $63 (euro46.70 to euro49.25) plus tax in January, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld Orlando also raised their ticket prices.

Price wars have become an annual rite between the three major theme parks. SeaWorld is owned by a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Cos., and Universal Orlando is part-owned by a unit of NBC Universal Inc., a unit of General Electric Co. - AP

I hate that they keep raising prices. The last time I went to Disney World (10/2000) we paid like $55. It's insane how much prices raise.

I have a theory that Disney isn't much interested in the 1-Day/1-Park crowd anymore. Ever since 2005 Disney's ticket structure has greatly rewarded those who buy a 5 or more day pass. Its all part of their plan to book you into a weeklong stay at one of their resorts, then since you have the tickets for their parks perhaps you will spend the entire time at their mercy.

They have even dropped the fee for the airport shuttle in hopes that you won't get a rental car.

That said, Disney quotes ticket prices without taxes, this could put the actual price of a ticket closer to $70 once the tax man is satisfied. No matter how you look at it, that is high.

Disney only recently started providing an airport shuttle and it has always been free so far. Other companies including the one who Disney contracts out the shuttle service to (Mears) have provided pay shuttles for years. The goal I believe is for people to stay on site and not visit the other parks in the area. Although they do have a car rental agency on site that makes it easy to just get a car for a day or two if you want to visit other parks.

The Walt Disney World parks are starting to get crowded at all times of the year now. I would hate to see what they are like during the really busy times since I try to always go during the slower seasons. I think that a 5th park or MAJOR expansions of the existing parks is needed. I don't even want to think about how long lines would be if the tickets were cheap.

I agree that they are trying to move people away from the single day tickets. Last time I went (October) I purchased a 10 day ticket which still has 7 days left on it which I will use on my next two visits to Orlando. That same ticket today is much more expensive.

For most people, the admission price to Disney is only the beginning of what they spend. I am always amazed to watch families drop as much as four to five thousand dollars in a week at Disney. And they all seem to come back happy. These are the same people who get majorly upset over $15 parking at Six Flags or $17 lunches at Kings Island. Disney, along with Dollywood, is excellent at getting people to HAPPILY spend scads and scads of money.

And why do they spend that much money at those parks? Because they feel as if there money is going to something worthwhile. They are getting a value that they feel is rightfully just for their money. At parks that charge an arm and a leg for parking, like Kings Island, that have severly limited their tram service equates in the general public mind that the park is cutting costs and not giving the guests the same value for their buck.

The problem with the $15 dollar parking is that its out of line with the rest of the industry. At Disney World parking is $9. Other then Six Flags are there any parks with parking that is more then $10 in the US?

Lets look at food. This is the menu from one restaurant at Epcot

Cheeseburger - Served with French fries. - $5.89

Bacon Double Cheeseburger - Served with French Fries. - $7.39

Double Cheeseburger - Served with French fries. - $6.89

Tossed Island Chicken Salad - Made with mango, pineapple, raisins, and coconuts in a Honey Mustard dressing. - $6.99

Whole Wheat Turkey Wrap - Served with Orange mayonnaise and Pineapple coleslaw. - $6.89

Roast Beef & Provolone Sandwich - Served with Mesquite mayonnaise and Pineapple coleslaw. - $7.09

Chicken Strips - Served with French fries. - $6.69

Drinks are $2.39 for a large and $2.09 for a regular

There is a reason why people spend so much money at Disney. Instead of eating at a counter service location (like above) they go and eat at a sit down restaurant. When they look at the souvenirs they actually find something they want to take home. You have to pay for tickets and parking (unless you are staying on site). Plus you have a hotel room, and maybe even a rental car. You need to also think about how your going to get there. It all adds up.

This reminds me of the reason behind the fast pass at Disney. First it helps drive guests to rides with a shorter line and it also gives them more time to shop. From what I read it did work and souvenir sales did go up.

Every park it seems has something that seems too expensive. Look at Universal if you stay at an onsite hotel the cheapest room is $199 during the off season. They just started charging the hotel guests $12 a day to park. You stay onsite at Disney you get free parking and you can drive yourself to the parks and park there free as well. For Kings Island it seems to be the food prices this year. Six Flags its parking. Looks like for Disney its ticket prices.

In the past both Universal, Sea World, and Disney all match each other a few weeks after one raises their prices. I expect a similar price increase will be announced in a few weeks from Sea World and Universal.
