Carousel

I went to PKI on the 5th. It had been a number of years since I went, and I have to say I was dissapointed at the deterioration of the carousel. It does not look like any maintenance has been put into caring for this historical ride at all. Many of the horses were missing a great deal of paint, and the music box was not working at all. Also the operators of the carousel were very rude. A carousel is one of those charming bits of the past we can still share with our children these days, to see this one decay is a shame.

It still has most of the original PTC horses that this year are 80 years old, the paint on theme is great, they still have the original PTC logos and initials on each hand painted one. The music box sounds great. The thing looks fine, what were you smoking? I have some pictures, I took my niece on it the other day.

The last few times we’ve ridden the Grand Carousel, I start reminiscing about the way it used to be too. Especially the music box I swear I can still hear the drums and cymbal playing but each time we pass, I realize that it’s only playing in my head.. I would love to share the full glory of the Grand Carousel with my daughter before she gets to old. Here’s to hoping that all the rumors about Cedar Fair fixing up Kings Island include the Grand Carousel and the K.I. & Miami Valley Rairod's theming.

CombatStupendous89: monkeyking's not smoking anything the Music Box used to actually play Instruments that accompanied the soundtrack as you went around giving it that grand magical feeling.

This is the very FIRST year the band organ hasn't played. Unfortunately, do to its age, it's has been having problems for several years, they stopped it this year, to hopefully, as I was told, fine tune it. Haha. As for the paint, even if we painted it every year, people would still chip it off.... go visit the tower, you will see what I mean.

As a former supervisor of that ride, if you don't like what you see, make sure you tell someone in a white shirt (either at tower or carousel), gather up associate names.... I loved hearing about my people, when I was supervisor, positive and negative, because I can't be there all the time to know what's going on, and its not like I would have people that would tell me this!! So do Todd and Robyn a favor and tell them!

I too have not heard the Band Organ playing any music this year, it has all been "piped" in. Which is ashame, because the Wurlitzer Duplex organ actually predates the Carousel. Hopefully they will spruce that up as it is a classic and get it in running order again. As for the horses, I believe PKI has a permanent person on staff that fixes up the horses (they own a couple extra that are restored during the season). At least they used to have a full time person devoted to the horses.

Didn't the Grand Carousal come from Coney Island when Kings Island first opened? If I remember right they made a big deal about it's historical value and all they had to do to move it and restore back to it's original grandeur.

Yes, the Grand Carousel, PTC #79 came from Coney Island and was built in 1926. When the Carousel was moved to Kings Island, it WAS not restored, although it obviously received a new building to house it. The reason it was not restored in 1972, is that Coney had completely refurbished it in 1969 at a cost of $50,000 and had completely repainted all of the rounding boards. The Carousel is currently the oldest ride in operation at Kings Island. The ride acquired the Wurlitzer Duplex band organ that it currently has when the Carousel was moved to Kings Island in 1972.

Great answer CoastersRZ!!! I knew if anyone knew you would. Back in the early years at Kings Island when the trees weren’t as mature and the Coney Mall wasn’t so long and filled in you could hear the Grand Carousel pretty far away, and at night it was so bright it would hurt your eyes coming in from the dark. You couldn’t leave without one last ride before you left. Even though you had to wait for several cycles, It was worth it!!

Next time anyone goes to CP there is a nice merry-go-round museum in Sandusky. It is very informative and if you go at the right time you can see restorative carving taking place. They also have a pretty nice carousel in the place that is fast and a lot of interesting carousel animals.

The Carousel is in need of repair for sure: It could use paint fix the music and a total restoration: Its great relaxful ride . And in the last comment a museum is what Kings Island deperately needs open archive open to the public if you wan to see the history of the Might Kings Island then you'll have a chance:

To cedar fix it up! I mean Cedar Point fixing everything up looking like nice and new

and to add the tiques back or something similar!

^Try proof reading your post before you post it. A couple of your sentences are hard to read/understand. Yes, a museum with articles, pictures and the like would be a very nice little attraction to visit. It would be nice to see images of the park in its early days when the trees were no where near as mature as they are today. I wouldn`t be terribly surprised if Cedar Fair decided to create a museum at Kings Island in the park at some point in the future. Heck, even Coney Island has a little museum (although it is tied to a retail shop) the Museum Shop is in Lakeside Pavilion right by the Ferris Wheel.

What is the deal in proofreading? It is part of the Terms of Service. By re-reading your post, you will possibly eliminate spelling errors, which is part of the reason I told him to proofread his post, the other being grammer and punctuation. It makes reading the boards more enjoyable when things are spelled correctly. Not to mention the fact that sometimes people from the park frequent these boards.

Since the subject of the Carousel came up, I thought someone might like to know that you can buy a couple of "Queen Of Kings Island" carousel music items at this website: www.carouselstore.com

They have a CD which has a few of the Christmas songs it played. (I was hoping at last years Winterfest they would be playing...but it had NO music at all when we were riding it.) Here's a direct link:

http://carouselstore.com/product_info.php?products_id=661

They also have this item...unfortunately it is only available as a cassette tape:

I bought the Christmas one last year...just as a novelty to annoy (most) people!
