  1. I seriously doubt they were auctioned. Given that Vortex was part of an arrangement after the prototype The Bat didn't operate satisfactorily, I'd not be surprised had Arrow taken them back for study and eventual salvage.

  12. In my own opinion. I would rather not meet that special someone at Kings Island. Great way to ruin your love for the park because if it doesn't work out, everytime you go to the park you will constanty be reminded of that person. But maybe it's just me.

  13. These are some cotter pins: (Source.) They are used to keep rods or shafts in place in assemblies. The rod/shaft usually has a hole drilled in it. Sometimes, both "legs" of the pin (the long, straight parts) go through the hole. The legs are then bent so the pin won't come out. Other times, one leg will go through the hole, but the other will go around the outside of the rod/shaft. It's all in how the pin is designed and how the pin will be used. If you have a removable ball hitch on your vehicle, it may use a cotter pin to keep the rod that keeps the removable part of your hitch in place. Here's a diagram I found via Google showing that kind of hitch assembly, where B is the rod being kept in place: (Source.) In the picture that Roarbot posted, these are the cotter pins: (Someone's bound to come up with a "Welcome Back, Kotter" joke soon...)

  14. How about installing this so that we can embed Facebook videos? Somebody shared a link to a Facebook video in the Random Video of the Day thread, but because the video was posted on a personal account and not a page, it requires login to access, meaning that people without Facebook accounts cannot view it. Being able to embed the video directly would allow anyone to view it (as long as they have Flash, but that's beyond our control, unfortunately).

  15. 600' would be the length of the zipline; calling that number the drop was certainly a misprint. It will definitely be a unique way to traverse the park, though I can think of more interesting places to go ziplining. Hopefully there are no problems with loose articles, spitting, or other leakage of bodily fluids. I wonder how much the (presumable) upcharge will be. Either way, it might be a fun activity for one of the 2014-2015 off-season meetup(s).

  16. -From Kings Island's Twitter: Kings Island @KingsIslandPR When visiting the park this year be sure to ride the new Banshee roller coast at night! #KI2014 -I though Cedar Point was America's roller coast.

  17. TheBEASTunchained, thanks for creating this thread. Having all these ancient photos in one place is very nice. I'm not old enough for these pics to bring back memories, but it sure is nice to imagine the park back then. It really does seem like a better place then than it is now.

  18. These were a little beat up, but they scanned. This was either the opening year, but no later than the 1973 season. The first picture is my sister, Lambsy and me. There is even a classic tram in the background. The second photo shows that even back in the 70's, I took my driving VERY seriously.

  20. I do Let's Play videos on YouTube (Basically narrated video walkthroughs of video games). I have a channel with over 1,500 subscribers, so I posted a little video with the link to my Coasting for Kids page, as well as a link to the main website so that anyone watching who lives near any of the 11 Cedar Fair parks can participate, too. I'm hoping that some great things come from that! Let's blow this thing up this year.

  21. I had a dream that Banshee was TWO rides. The coaster that we were all expecting, and one of those up and down rocketship things. There was a little comic scene (like the ones in Planet Snoopy) showing the Banshee getting into ne of the cars from the other ride. The story was that she was causing it to berserk. It would speed up, and move up and down at "random." It was really weird. Sent from my VS840 4G using Tapatalk

  22. I found it especially upsetting that the new owner and her management claimed the reason we are seeing less of Pat is that the park is proceeding in a "new direction." Though technically true, such diversions from reality are at best clever deceit. We see less of Pat because that is HER choice. She is heart broken over all this. To claim it is the park's choice that we see less of her seems arrogant, offensive and patronizing, at least to me. And if seeing less of her in the park and in marketing is not the result of Pat's own choice, that's even more revealing, and tells me far more than I ever wanted to know. There was a time I adored that park and its management. That time has past. This whole thing is just terribly sad.

  26. You can see the cotter pins in this picture. We would just remove one at a time, remove the pins, tap in new ones, and repeat. Repeat up to 1,250 times, lol. But a lot of people wouldn't change the chain until absolutely necessary.

  29. I once rode Diamondback on a chilly October morning when it was 40 degrees outside. It was an unenjoyably cold experience. I can't fathom any rider having a good time at lower temperatures, whether it is able to be run at lower temperatures or not.

  30. During my epic Halloween Haunt 2010 night ride on Beast, it was around 40 degrees at best. The coaster ran great, but my sister and her friend HAD to scream the entire ride, having their mouths open. I usually keep mine closed on roller coasters, BTW... The next day? I was fine, but they had sore throats. A bit off-topic, but not really...

  31. I think that Cedar Fair SHOULD at least buy their brakes from a Sandusky company. I mean, we all know what happens if you try to save a few bucks with the brakes from the "other guys". Obviously joking, in case it honestly needs saying.

  34. * Serendipitous trips to KI. A bit harder from the District. And somewhat off topic, a visit or six to Big Droppy Thing. I just wish the tolls were less. The Northeast ain't exactly car friendly. And since Califorrnia is in my AOR (area of responsibility, Jonathan), perhaps I ought to gallivant out that way again.

  35. I found a link to this year's information in a GKTW email newsletter. Home page for the event: http://support.gktw.org/site/PageNavigator/coastingforkids.html KI's registration page: http://support.gktw.org/site/TR?fr_id=1236&pg=entry My donation page: http://support.gktw.org/site/TR/CoastingForKids/General?px=1071755&pg=personal&fr_id=1236 Note that this year they are doing the fundraising directly through GKTW's website, rather than using FirstGiving. The system is not as clear as the FirstGiving system was, but hopefully this will get rid of FirstGiving's transaction fees. As far as the itinerary, we're starting at 9:00 am instead of 8:00 am this year. We have Diamondback from 9 to 10, then Red Racer from 10 to 6 (which is an hour later than previous years). We also get a half hour on Banshee starting at 10:30 pm. Shirts appear to be purple this year. I have taken the liberty of creating Team KICentral, so I hope to see you there!

I am very excited to share this wonderful experience once I get back you all can expect pictures as early as Tuesday.

  41. Back in 2009, we took shelter in the back of DB's gift shop. We were then moved to a warehouse in the employees only area outside PS (then NU). Why you may ask? There was an active tornado warning in place. This is actually probably the most vivid memory I have of Kings Island. The weather was just astounding. I would share more in detail, but I fear my post would get too long.
