Holiday World to get new ride in 2010?

Recommended Posts

I am sorry I was poking fun at her age. Honestly, I think she seems like a great person and reminds me of people I've lost in my life (my grandma being one). Oh, and did I even mention anything about video games on those posts (I didn't so you didn't have to bring that up).

I was just saying, as an observer, that Voyage did have peices of wood flying around when it first opened (which is probably normal, but still a little dangerous, what if someone got hit with a piece). And Pilgrim's Plunge was great, except for that lift. It didn't seem that it was saving a lot of time by having one boat go down it while the other was going up it. It was the first ride of its kind, so it makes since it's not going to have a proven track record for having all its kinks worked out. As for Kentucky Kingdom, I'm suprised that park hasn't closed down do to all the competition it has to deal with (Holiday World and Kings Island aren't that far away). It says something when you have a park that opens as the midway for the State Fair.

As far as I'm concerned, it really is a phenomenon that Holiday World isn't in major debt. How do they make up for all their costs? The park price is pretty low, the food prices are the most affordable I've ever seen at a theme park, they have free parking, and free drinks. Where's the money coming from? Do they own the rights to the nearby campgrounds? Even if they do, it probably still wouldn't make enough money to cover all the costs. I think that the nearby community (and even Jasper) might donate money to keep the park growing.

The first year I went on it, the ride had very small pieces of wooden flying off the track at me. It wasn't that bad really, just one or two peices during the first drop and the 2nd one. I went on it 3x's and it happened each time. The largest piece was about the size of my index finger. I'd never seen anything like it before. I was scared mostly because I didn't think that was normal, not because I could have been hurt.

Go back and read what I said. I said the Kochs didn't learn to how to run a park by playing Roller Coaster Tycoon. In point of fact, the family has been running parks for decades. If you thought the Roller Coaster Tycoon remark applied to you, you must have your reasons for thinking so...but they did not come from me.

a. Kentucky Kingdom is one of the most profitable parks in the Six Flags chain.

b. It also says that is what happens when you lease part of the land your park is on from the Commonwealth of Kentucky on the express condition that you open your park as part of the midway (part...many of the rides are brought in by a concessionaire for the State Fair, which is going on now). Kentucky Kingdom has no choice BUT to be a part of the fair...and I am sure they are happy to do so.

I have to say that although I am no fan of Voyage, I am quite sure that neither Gravity Group designed nor did Holiday World operate a wooden coaster that shed pieces of wood while the ride was in operation. Sounds like hyperbole and puffery to me.

Courtesy of Merriam-Webster:

hyperbole: : extravagant exaggeration (as "mile-high ice-cream cones")

puffery: : exaggerated commendation especially for promotional purposes : hype

And, mind you, I am trying to be nice here...

A waste of potential...IMO! Not that it wont be fun to ride, but HW needs to top The Voyage!!! (more than once!!) And build hotels and a casino or two.... And launch that park into legendary status....

This is the second post I've read tonight that references casino's at amusement parks. I don't get the connection or the idea here? These two entertainment choices tend to attract two very different types of audiences. Family friendly and amusement parks didn't seem to help Las Vegas - why would Casino's help KI or HW?

I think I remember that one year in the mid-90s, Kentucky Kingdom operated as usual (POP only) during the State Fair, and did miserably.

Take your average crowd that visits say the Argosy, do you see them as being avid amusement park enthusiasts? I dont think so, many I am affraid would be unable to ride rides or even have the capability to manuver around a park during the summer months.

I dont see the connection.

Despite what people may think, the Voyage did have tiny pieces of wood flying off of it. Now that I think of it, it could have been from the nearby tree branches, which makes more sense then the ride itself.

I don't think you can make a wooden coaster that can "top voyage" for awhile. If anything, they need to build up to par with the voyage, but I don't see them surpassing it anytime soon.

This is supposed to be about Wilde Beest so why are there so many responses to the Voyage thing. It really wasn't that big of a deal.

^Basically, they have a small "waterfall" which creates a wall of water through which you pass. And they project an animated dragon on the water so it looks like you're going to crash right into its head. A very cool effect.

That would be pretty neat. I'm excited for this park's future! Timberliners AND a new water coaster! Yes, I do believe I will head up there for my first ever trip.

^Agreed! Boomerang Bay has the potential to be a nice water park if it got something every few years! The hotel next door has a way better water park! (I'm trying to make GWL seem like it's just some small hotel to make BBay look bad...) And it's not just us enthusiast who are 'complaining', my family agrees that they don't like Boomerang Bay, they said they don't have any good slides, there is nothing to do, it's not shaded enough in certain spots and it's just overall boring.

Holiday World to unveil new $5.5 million "Wildebeest" water coaster in May

http://www.fox59.com/news/sns-bc-in--holidayworld-ride,0,2858433.story

A southern Indiana amusement park will unveil what it touts as the world's longest water coaster in May.

The $5.5 million Wildebeest ride will open May 14 at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari. The ride is a third of a mile long and will use a conveyor system to take riders up a lift hill before dropping them 38 feet. Riders will then go up seven additional hills, through two tunnels and around a helix.

The ride uses a magnetic field under the slide surface to move the toboggan-style rafts up the hills. Park officials say the technology has been used in steel roller coasters in the past.

Wildebeest's top speed will hit 36 feet per second. The ride lasts 2 1/2 minutes.
