The Son of Beast Discussion Thread

Featured Replies

If they sold enough pieces of the wood, that would make a nice down payment on a new woodie to put in it's place. B)

I would pay like $3-$5 for a block of SoB wood with the name stamped on it. It's a huge markup by the park, most customers would find that to be a reasonable price, AND it costs almost nothing for the park to make. (and it's cheaper than most park souveniers!)

Assuming a nice down-payment on a roller coaster is $1M, then all it would take is you, plus only 199,999 more people willing to buy a $5 chunk of wood. :P

I think KI should give SoB one more chance.

This is what they should do:

1. Sell the current trains, or keep them for a new ride.

2. Get Gravity Group to retrack the rose bowl. (Eventually, they could retrack the whole ride)

3. Buy Timberliners. Put them on SoB.

4. Test the new trains.

5. Invite KIC, ACE, GOCC, and the media to a special media day for SoB so KI can see if the new trains work.

6a. If the results are good, open SoB for 2010.

6b. If the results are bad, tear down SoB and put the Timberliners on The Beastie (I'm going to start calling FOC that now), The Racer, or The Beast.

SoB may just need the right trains to be a good ride.

Yea its not like I ripped a support out.......now that would be a prize hehe

A person I know stole a cookie from KI. And he was tried in the court of law and suspendend from the park indefinatly. Now that is pretty idiotic, but they could still charge you if they want to. Property is property. No matter the size or price. In this case? They would let it go, but theft is theft. Not a good habit to take in.

Well 1 and 3 would have to happen together. How would retracking just the rosebowl help the overall ride experience? If I am correct the issue is not just the tracking but the support system leading into the rosebowl, because of all the forces of the ride.... please correct me when I am wrong, just trying to get the info right. Wouldnt they need to almost tear down the rosebowl and rebuild it? I like number 5 except I dont think the park would do. The reason being is as you say in 6b if the tests are bad then they have wasted a bunch of money on the ride. If they do any sort of ride revamp I dont think you will see a big media day unless the ride is 100% perfect. Its so hard though to figure out what the park will do. Because if they put money into it, they will want the ride to be safe and enjoyable, if they put no money into it you can think they will destroy it.... so much to think about...

Making all these rennovations of the ride would probably cost more than just leaving it alone for awhile. They could possibly do that, just let it stay there, keep repairing (minor repairs) and just wait until it is fixed very well, test it out, maybe open it again 2011.

I don't know what I'm saying.

Maybe the rose bowl doesn't need to be retracked. It may just need new trains.

SoB trains could not be installed on any other woodie, because SoB has wider track.

The old trains couldn't, but the current trains could. It's not like they couldn't modify the wheels again.

Just curious, what happened to the old trains?

I think retracking son would be more expensive than just letting it go. It's been a money pit and a liability up to now. Besides, there's no guarantee that will fix the problems and then you're out x million for that...

Theyh have been used as props for Halloween Haunt.

They did in past years, but not this year. One can assume why Kings Island would not want to display the trains in such manner as they did before, what with the recent events surrounding the ride.

well if i spent millions on someting and it didn't work right, i won't spend as much as it takes to fix it. Why waste money? I bought i car and a tire is flat, oh well i'll just buy a new car :P

I can't help but think that, would anyone really ride SoB at this point? Besides coaster enthusiasts, the GP has heard SO MUCH about how unsafe the ride is, I can't imagine that ridership would be anywhere near where it was before.

When the ride opened halfway into the 2007 season it had a almost full queline. So I'd say it's still hard to tell.

Be honest though. Its not like SOB is suffering/suffered from just a flat tire. It would be more similar to your 2 year old car blowing its engine.... You owe x+y amount where a new engine costs X+Z..... at what line do you cut your loss at....

Had it been in the news constantly like it has been this time? And, certain people lied and said it was no longer rough, so guests wanted to see if it actually was. It has a proven track record much like the Ford Pinto.

Does anyone think it's the wider track or the size of SoB that's making it rough?

both along with the speed of the ride, the slight engineering issues the ride was created with, being built in ohio. cheap wood. It could honestly be a little of everything. I am not being sarcastic by saying that but I do not think its just one issue in a vacuum but more realistically its a mixture of everything that is contributing to the roughness

Ohio has changing climates that may or may not be best suited to extremely high roller coasters.... summers near 90 winters that can reach single digits. Probably not great for wooden structures.....

Yes I know KI and other parks have wooden roller coasters but maybe its easier to maintain those rides, versus the world tallest....

Plus the Ohio part was slightly tongue in cheek...

EDIT: I am not a structural engineer, I just know that most things swell in heat and shrink in cold, Wood/Steel/Concrete

And now the speculation begins in print:

Coaster's future in doubt

Kings Island 'Son of Beast' may have taken last ride...

Wright said she would not have accepted the settlement unless the video testimony of forensic engineer Richard Schimizze were made public.

In his testimony, the engineer said that Kings Island officials knew about extensive problems with the ride since 2000 and attempted to fix the issues on a case-by-case basis that increased stresses on certain components of the ride, leading to wooden supports snapping and causing accidents that injured Wright, and a reported 27 others, on July 9, 2006.

"I would feel like garbage if I held on to this information and then a year from now somebody was really hurt bad," said Wright, struggling to control her voice through tears. "I'm not saying that's going to happen, I'm just saying, 'What if?'"...

Wright said her pursuit of her case was never about money and she isn't leading a "crusade" against Cedar Fair. She is sympathetic to the company in that it inherited Son of Beast from Kings Island's former owner, Paramount Parks, a subsidiary of Viacom.

What Wright wants, she said, is to make sure what happened to her and others doesn't happen again....

MOST terms of a settlement are never made public. There may have been other terms of this settlement that may affect the future. Or not.

"A New Era" event was open to ACE, GOCC, KIC, KIE, and WLWT. It featured a free buffet luncheon, complimentary wennies and marshmellows, and they gave away teaser posters for the replacement attraction. "Amazing Grace", "Kum-by-ya" and "Hallelujah!" were sung while holding hands around the 'campfire'. A dance party was later held in the Flight of Fear Dome, played to "Ready to go" and several Earth Wind and Fire songs.

"Best Day I've ever had at Kings Island" said a Mr. Joey Baldacchino, 15, from Springburro.

Springboro. ;) I was going to ask why you used the group picture without me, then I noticed off to the side. Hahaha!!!

Burn baby burn, let the whole thing come down. The way the paper explains it; the whole coaster is messed up.

Jackson: HEY, WAIT! If it's doused in kerosene, I might just go up in flames with it! :(

I probably would. Mostly because I'm a stubborn feisty fool.

Jackson: HEY, WAIT! If it's doused in kerosene, I might just go up in flames with it! :(

No, you throw the torch in, so it doesn't touch you.

and run away.

Yay quality comedy :)

I tried picturing CedarPointer just standing cheering, but the mental image I got instead was the ridiculous scene from Revenge of The Nerds when they get drunk and accidentally... well they stand there with beer in hands chanting "our house, our house is burning down" >.>

I imagine this is a more realistic representation of what the event would REALLY be like:
