A Snowy Racer Ride

Featured Replies

Check out this photo that DH sent me of The Racer covered in a lite blanket of snow. I think I see a different version of this photo every year and it never gets old.

Wow.. That's stunning, but yet it makes me kinda sad to see it sleeping like that. I don't know why. Maybe just because I miss it.

That is an amazing photo Boddah, thank you for sharing that with us. I love seeing KI in a blanket of snow and ever year when we get our first snowstorm, I come straight here looking for updates of KI's wintry wonderland. I wish he would take more pictures of some of the other rides as well, but for now this photo will do.

I really fell in love with Racer this year. It never really did much for me but I really enjoy it now. Thanks for sharing this great photo!

That is a beautiful picture! Like other people said I just love looking at KI in the snow!

Best paint job it's had in years!

Kidding aside, that's an amazing photo. Racer really is one of the hidden gems at Kings Island, and to see a wonderful picture like that just made my heart soar. Wow, what an artistic ride with such a magnificent backdrop, Boy do I miss my park!

I saw this on Twitter a few hours ago. It's kind of sad to see an old friend all covered in snow. But it will be much happier on April 17th. biggrin.gif

April will be here before you know it.

I hope. I wish I could just sleep until then. It would seem like less than a second! Except the fact that I probably wouldn't be able to get to sleep.

Beautiful. I wish we went by Carowinds when it snowed here last weekend, but it was gone by the next day. LOL I would've taken a picture if we had.

Imagine the speed you could get with Ice on the track.

Please note, I am not a physics major so if it would not indeed go faster, my bad

Well, until relatively recently, it certainly would not have stopped as easily, if at all....best to have only one train on each side under such circumstances!

So wait, when there's snow and ice on the track, the brakes become somewhat less in effective?

*Evil grin*

Not on Racer anymore...

Rain, snow, ice...all deterred performance of the skid brakes...which is why they are no longer there...

Well darn. And it certainly won't effect the magnetic brakes of The Beast...sad Jackson.

If the rails were completely ice covered, the coefficient of friction between the wheels and the rails is reduced. If anything, the wheels would be sliding along instead of spinning like they're supposed to, at least in certain places. This means less kinetic energy is lost to friction and heat in the wheel bearings. But there are probably other factors as well. Wheel bearings sometimes have more rotational resistance when they run cooler, so that may act as a braking factor in places where sufficient friction is available between the wheel and the rail. I'd be surprised if there's much difference either way, but it's an interesting question!
