AZ Kinda Guy
I'm down right ignorant when it comes to fireworks technology. Is all that computer controlled?
Oldiesmann
I'm down right ignorant when it comes to fireworks technology. Is all that computer controlled? Most likely it is. Almost all professional fireworks shows are computer-controlled these days both because of the syncing with the music and because it's a lot safer. Adam, how did you get access to record this? Jasper
Very nice video Adam, really cool to see a view like that of fireworks.

BoddaH1994
I'm down right ignorant when it comes to fireworks technology. Is all that computer controlled? I've spoken to one of the pyrotechnicians for the park and asked them how it works. He said, and I hope I'm remembering this correctly, that KI's system is a little on the primitive side and recorded audio commands are given through the phone out there and the technician simply follows the queues given through the phone. This is done so the music and pyro can sync. Of course, this could have changed since then...
Oldiesmann
Thanks for the info guys. I would think that they'd be computerized by now, even though it wouldn't be as easy to run computer cords and such all the way back in the woods like that. DeLorean Rider
The last time I was out to the launch pad (circa 2006) there was still a small booth large enough for one person that had a control panel with a large grid of small buttons. At that time I know that the fireworks were all manually launched. This may have changed since. At Disney it is all "set it and forget it." In fact, many of the larger mortars that Disney uses have remote on board detonators so that not only do they launch into the sky in sync with the music, but while in the sky they also detonate in time with the music. They also use air cannons to launch a lot of mortars, instead of the typical black powder launch, to reduce smoke. This is primarily used at Disneyland, however there are a few implementations at WDW.
vortexfan
There are still many shows around the country that use manual, electronic firing systems (one such system can be seen here: ). Most "pyro musicals" use software and everything is already set up to go at certain intervals, so as DeLorean Rider mentioned, the pyrotechnicians sit back and monitor that everything is going smoothly. Although I believe the setup is the same, I think they moved the launch pad in 2007 after the addition of Firehawk. That accounts for why The Beast is closed for a few minutes during the fireworks - because of its closer proximity.
Jasper
I can honestly say I have only seen KIs fireworks display once, even though I have been in the park until close and after close several times. I am always in line for The Beast and get to a point where all I can do is hear the fireworks and see the lights from them on the ground. In fact the last time I was at the fireworks launch pad, it was surrounded by King Cobra track haha.
flightoffear1996
I think KI fireworks are really lacking in quality and I kind of wish they would just do away with them and spend the money else where.
The Interpreter
Kings Island is the only seasonal US park with virtually nightly fireworks. If they are discontinued, there can be no assurance the money saved would stay in Kings Island's budget. It might well go for debt reduction, for a ride for another park or even to enhance Mr. R. Kinzel's salary and/or benefits.
flightoffear1996
Or maybe just an idea make one good show on a Saturday night. The fireworks Im sorry to say is poor.
CoastersRZ
And the tradition of nightly fireworks at Kings Island actually predates the park. It was a tradition that began back at Coney Island. In fact, one of the first places that the Rozzi`s started launching fireworks was at Coney Island!
The Interpreter
Or maybe just an idea make one good show on a Saturday night. The fireworks Im sorry to say is poor. And make it much, much easier for the nickel and dimers who do budgets to eliminate the once a week show? After all, they will say, people still come the other nights of the week, we don't need this... These are very cost conscious times for Cedar Fair. If there is any cut in the fireworks, you can bet there will be more such cuts.
flightoffear1996
Ok well then just nix the entire show then. Let the money go somewhere else wherever that might be.
Coasterkidd23
Rozzis Shoot fireworks at ki and they use this keyboard style module which perhaps is how they shoot Ki's fireworks
BoddaH1994
Ok well then just nix the entire show then. Let the money go somewhere else wherever that might be. You may not enjoy the fireworks, but many others do. In fact, I can guarantee that as soon as the public becomes apathetic to them they'll be gone. Whether it's the Half Pint Brawlers or the fireworks, this mentality of, "i don't enjoy this show or activity, so it should be eliminated so that no one can enjoy it" is getting really old quickly... Shman
Rozzis Shoot fireworks at ki and they use this keyboard style module which perhaps is how they shoot Ki's fireworks Actually Rozzi's no longer shoots the nightly fireworks at Kings Island, this past summer has all been a new company which is why you may have noticed a change in things over the year. TTD-120-420
I am a huge fan of fireworks. I can't think of a better way to end the day at King's Island than sitting by the fountains watching the display. They are simple, but I love them. One question, where is the launch pad located? KIfan1980
If you think the KI fireworks show is a waste, then question whether you are the target audience. A few trips a year, my kids get the privilege of staying and watching the fireworks (birthday trip, they've been especially good). These are the days they look forward too and enjoy the most. For a nightly show, I think it is pretty darn good. As Ryan said - just because it's not your cup of tea, don't act like it's not an important part of the park. Someone made that choice about Tiques, Eagles, KCKC, etc...
XGatorHead 8904
^Agreed. Every trip to the park, GatorGirl will ask "Are there fireworks tonight?" She gets disappointed when there are not. It's an excellent way to end the day, and I enjoy hearing them from my house every night during the summer. Back when I worked at the park during the summers, a friend & co-worker of mine summed it up nicely: "Where else can you work and see fireworks every night?" Well okay, I can think of a few places, but he made a great point IMO.
LongLiveTheSmurfRide
I don't typically freak out over the fireworks now, but when I was a youngin' that was one of my favorite parts. People still line up all over to get a good view, so it's still a big part and great ending to a lot of peoples day at the park. Of course, was born on the 4th of July so fireworks are pretty special to me.
