Opening Day 2011 Poll

Before the 2010 KI season started, I made a poll asking "what will you do first in 2010?". Now, it's time for the 2011 version!

Same thing as last time- what are you going to do first once those gates open for the first time? If you can't be there opening day, this means the first day you head to KI.

Enjoy the poll. You should know the drill by now!

PS: A bit early, but hey...opening day is less than 2 months now!:P

I am going to ride WindSeeker first and foremost, then depending on the time, ride either WindSeeker again, or Vortex, then line up closest to Firehawk and try and be the first train on that, or possibly Diamondback since I was second train of the year on that last year.

Gonna check out the updated Coney Mall while making my way towards the new ride.

Rotag--You gonna be there on opening day? The wife needs to challenge her Firehawk fear as well.

yup, i will. i have put my fear of Firehawk (mostly a mental issue with the restraint system) off long enough.

For some reason, WindSeeker doesn't really interest me as far as thrills. I'll probably ride it several times over the summer for the view, but I'm not waiting in the massive line that's sure to form on the morning of April 30. What I will do that morning is try to get first train on Vortex during ERT, then pick a coaster that I can quickly access from the portion of the park open for ERT and try for first train on that when the ropes drop. I'd like Firehawk for that second "first train", but I'll take anything that doesn't seem to have a lot of people standing at the barrier ready to head to it.

Question for those that have been to KI on opening day before: Based on past opening day experiences, does the park usually set up lines for ERT rides that morning outside the gate and then escort them back, or is it just a mad scramble when the gates open? And if it's the former, how early should I plan on arriving to be on the first train?

Unrelated side note (but related to the posts above): I've heard several people say that once you get on it, Firehawk actually isn't as scary as it first looks. My experience with it, being that it was my first inverting coaster, never mind my first (and still only) flying one, tends to support that.

I may try an unusual route I took on a trip last year, and it was so much fun...IS to VF, AE, Racer, and then Eifel Tower...in the morning it's great and uncrowded, and you can look at all of those people standing in line for DB...then to Starbucks and check out the fountains....

The only B&M flyer I have been on is Manta. I thoroughly enjoyed it. More so than Firehawk. It just felt like there were more flying sensation moments, and the fact that the ride skirted over the water and past water falls made the ride more exciting.

Last year on opening day, I arrived about 20-30 minutes before the park opened, the lines were forming at the metal detectors. I was on the first DB train of the year. A couple of pieces of advice:

  • You can't always get lucky with which metal detector rope is dropped first (don't get your hopes up too high - is second or third train really that big a difference?)
  • If you have a choice of two admissions turnstiles that are open, go to the one that has already had someone go through (you know the computer is working and the first swipe of the day always seems slower)
  • Wait for the admissions employee to finish scanning you (the guy ahead of me last year took a header over the turnstile gate)
  • Kings Island allowed the mad scramble last year
  • Last year we knew which side of IS would be the Gold Pass Entrance, will that change in 2011?

I'm also wondering how long the wait for 5-1 will be during Vortex ERT compared to the other seats :)

Terp loves Firehawk. Other than Tatsu (haven't ridden Manta...yet), the Vekomas are my favorite flying coasters. The other B and M flyers I have ridden bore me...and I don't particularly care for the only non-boring part, the pretzel loop. Uh....no.

Im not a Fan of any of the Flying Coasters or Stand Ups but mabye just mabye I can have a Great Adventure on Chang this Summer :). My fav Flying Coaster is Batwing at Six Flags America and Ive ridden all 3 Vekomas. Like Terp said I'm Not fond of the 3 B&M Supermans. Its a Tie between Chang but I adore The Souths Tallest Stand up B&M coaster :P.

Yep, that one's a scorcher, and with any luck, the places where I spend my summers (and winters) will be changing, provided I am given the green lantern soon. But there's a mad scramble to the finish line, and nice guys don't always finish last (but whatever would that mean as to me, tee hee?)

Okay, back on topic...what will I do first on my first day at KI this year? Maybe go watch a midget bleed. Nah, Terp's not changing THAT much. Couldn't wait that long and wouldn't do it any way! It's Terp....probably espy the number of nickels being amassed and where.

Dude, you have seen my body size, and I do NOT, in any way shape or form, "drop" into the restraints... even with the amount of space between my chest and the restraint system when lying down on my back going up the lift hill. When the train rolls on the track, your body rolls with it and you essentially settle nicely into the chest restraints. The oddest thing to me is the slight feel of pressure in my head from being upside down facing downwards on the drop right after the rollover. The reason I dont ride it any more, is because it... quite honestly... bores me to death to do so and the wait time (to me) far outweighs any enjoyment I get out of it. I promise you, you wont feel yourself drop.... you will enjoy the experience.

If you like Tatsu then you'll like Manta. Tatsu and Manta are in their own class as far as the flyers go, and they both have the same feel when you're on them.

There's one thing about Manta that Tatsu doesn't have...airtime. You only get it in the very front of the train (first two rows), but when you're coming in to the pretzel loop you get a very noticeable burst of airtime. It's quite a sensation!

Well, while it wasn't ERT or anything, but the wait for 5-1 on Vortex has never been much longer than any of the other seats every time I went and rode Vortex, both times (in May and October). In fact, it seemed the front and 7-1 had longer lines than 5-1.

I probably won't be visiting opening day, but I will probably be there the weekend after. I see myself going for WindSeeker and checking out Coney Mall first, heading for The Beast and Diamondback soon after the park opens, and then checking out Flight Deck. I'm anxious to see what has changed over the offseason.

  • 4 weeks later...

I voted for whatever the KIC group is doing, but then I realized everyone is going to split off in different directions. I'll go with the biggest KIC group (or the least boring one lol.. I'd rather not waste time by walking around in circles and being indecisive, that drives me insane).

I would have chosen Diamondback, but they decided that a 230-foot B&M hyper doesn't deserve ERT recognition anymore.. besides, I already kicked off 2011 with Intimidator at Carowinds, so I suppose it really doesn't matter how I start opening day at KI as long as I'm around my friends.
