Interesting Things Ride-Ops Do

There's someone on The Beast that makes the spiel "...and enjoy the rest of your day at Kings Island - where everything's made of wood... except some stuff."

I heard a ride op say that on The Beast just two weeks ago.

Also, on AE, a ride op got on the ride behind us even though people were still waiting in line. I didnt think that was very kind.

Every so often ride ops are asked to take a test ride. I wasn't there so I dunno what happened.

On a really long day when I was working on Diamondback I gave a spiel as guests were boarding the train to the effect of "Please locate all 7 exits of the ride for when your experience is completed." The look on some peoples faces were great!

I love when it rains and ride ops tell people to enjoy their ride on Kings Island's first completely underwater ride.

Yesterday, on Flight of Fear the ride op would act like he's counting down from "5" to launch the train but he would actually launch the train at "2" to trick people and surprise them. It made the launch a lot more fun.

That's me!!!

Haha, was the ride op tall, with short brown hair? 16 years old?

I love doing that, or also, "3,2,1......" Then it launches after a second or two.

Haha are ride ops allowed to check all of the seats and give a silent "All clear" then say "Oh no don't start the ride, the restraint system isn't locked; they will come undone!" and then set the riders up the hill? If they would have done that on Diamondback I would have died right where I sat. laugh.gif

NO. Think of all the things that could happen:

* A guest DOES die of a heart attack on the otherwise uneventful ride. Even if there were no lawsuit (very unlikely), how would you feel the rest of your life if you were one of those ride ops in the situation you painted?

* Worse, what if something does go wrong on the ride? What if one of the restraints were not fastened or checked? This conduct before the ride would doubtless be used by the decedent's (or hopefully just the injured parties') lawyer(s) during the settlement negotiations/trial....

* What if, as this was being done, a state ride inspector was one of the riders? Or, perhaps even worse, an insurance company loss control specialist from the company that insures the park (or from Cedar Fair itself, as it appears to be self-insured)? Or, I would hope worse yet, Mr. Kinzel (Dick or Bart, for that matter)?

Ride operators have very serious jobs. Some of the people riding are already a bit nervous/apprehensive. Not taking a ride op's responsibilities seriously is no laughing matter. There is room for a bit of comedy, such things even help to relieve tension for some guests. But there is not room for making fun of safety, terrorizing guests, jeopardizing guests or jeopardizing employee safety. Not at all.

The Crypt preride:

"Welcome to the Crypt, the best ride in the world."

Millie station:

"Welcome Millenium Force, this ride will take you up to a staggering height of 15 feet, drop you down 13 feet at speed up to 8mph, have fun!"

My friend and I were getting ready to board DB one day last week. We heard the ride op handling station microphone duties ("station clear!") using some very fun spiels after the station was clear and the train was heading toward the lift. Usually it's something like this:

Ride Op: "When I say Diamond you say Back. Diamond!"

Guests: "Back!"

This particular day they used the following:

Ride Op: "Red Robin!"

Guests: "Yum!"

and this:

Ride Op: "Subway!"

Guests: "Eat Fresh!"

I hope I'm not breaking any rules by bumping this, but I just had to add something new:

This morning, after I had boarded Firehawk and the restraints had been secured, the ride op said over the PA something to the effect of, "OK, red train, you will be falling back into your pre-flight position in 3... 2... 1... and now you can stare at the dull gray that they painted our ceiling, the same gray used in every prison in the U.S."

I'm like the only one in my family that loves Flight Deck. They all think it's lame and too short... I agree it's too short, but that doesn't make a ride bad. i.e. Top Thrill Dragster, they all loved that ride, but wait... that ride is short too.

Anyways, back when I was 7 or so, on Viking Fury the Ride Ops used to always have marco-polo on the ship, it'd make the ride more fun, and less awkward.

I know what you mean, I have NEVER felt more awkward at Kings Island than when riding Viking Fury.
