Avatarland update?

Recommended Posts

I could only wonder what would this be for. Once again the Disney Imagineers do it again!

It's most likely going to be for an area themed around the film 'Avatar' in WDW's Animal Kingdom.

Let me rephrase my statement: In the area, I could only wonder what will the machine be used for in the area.

The article makes mention that it might be part of a show. I certainly don't think they'd strap park patrons to a real airplane with fake dragon wings and fly them around, so perhaps it's just meant to be an expensive prop to sail around the area through the day.

Or maybe it's just to drum up attention and isn't much of anything at all.

Dragons were always meant to be part of Animal Kingdom's Beastly Kingdom. ;) But Disney Parks and Resorts has a lot of trouble getting a project greenlit unless an intellectual property is attached... Too bad. The concept art makes me think that Beastly Kingdom was going in the direction of Harry Potter's island or Cars Land - mega-immersive and totally grand-scale impressive.

Since Disney lost out to Universal for HP (and IoA attendance going through the roof), I can see Avatar going in big at Disney.

I know it was discussed elsewhere in this forum, but I've got to believe losing Potterworld to Universal was a pretty big blow to Disney parks down there. How many families with 7-12 year old kids are they going to miss out for 1 or more days of their Orlando Vacation simply b/c Harry Potter is huge to them? I can't see Avatar having that same lasting effect, though Avatarland itself may be enough to drive visitors if done in true disney fashion, no matter the success of the next 3 films.

First a Disney secret is "leaked" now this,

Filming back to back sequels are not a new process. The Matrix first did it, followed by the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Uh, didn't Superman and Superman II do it first? Or the the Back to the Future sequels? Short memory on that person.

List of productions filmed back-to-back from Wiki, so take it for what it is worth (although I have have heard of most):

Why wouldn't Disney roll over to Rowling?

My understanding is Rowling wanted final refusal rights on all aspects. Disney refused; quite possibly due to knowing Avatar was available with 2 movies in the works while the HP movies would be ending in 2011.

Sort of silly that Rowling would insist on this hyper-realistic atmosphere that makes it difficult to shop, eat, etc for the sake of authenticity, but then allows Dueling Dragons to remain a very bright steel coaster sitting in a field with a 2-D dark green backdrop... The equivalent of putting Raptor in a Disney Park.

Ground broken, yep... Estimated to debut in 2017. Just in time for the next movie in the series.

Perhaps by then the fans will be going wild.

For what it's worth, the concept art did quell a lot of hatred for the project. Many of us quickly forgot that when Cars Land was first announced, fans DESPISED the idea, saying Cars was about the worst source material for a park land anyone could think of. Now, Cars Land is - to say the least - beloved and adored. I truly can't seen Avatar getting the same euphoric reception, but at least it will be a beautiful, detailed, and expensive land at the resort.

Still doesn't deserve a full land, but if it has to have one, at least it looks well done so far.

Avatarland might be nice on its own, but it, along with the appalling Dinorama area (NOT Dinoland USA, which is actually fairly well themed), really doesn't belong in Animal Kingdom. I still don't understand the creative decisions that led to carnival rides being put in a fake parking lot in a Disney theme park. Anyway, I have no doubt that Avatarland will be nice, it's just unfortunate that it's being put where it is (along with Monsters Inc in Tomorrowland, Flying Carpets in Adventureland, Soarin in The Land placed so it soars up behind Canada, Swan and Dolphin towering over France, etc... poor placement actually seems to be a fairly common problem at WDW, doesn't it?).

(and, yes, I understand that it's in AK because of the environmental theme or something... but it seems like a stretch to me)

I find it frustrating that Disney would even try to incorporate Avatar into one of its parks. The movie's visuals were great, but the whole story isn't exactly family friendly, its not like your going to go home and watch the movies with your kids after visiting. With Cars, you're already familiar with the story and the characters and that makes Cars land all the more exciting, but most kids won't really know much about Avatar.

As I have said before I am not crazy about the Avatar Theme, but it looks very well done. Also Beastly Kingdom was going to be a land of mythical creatures, see the Lost Continent that has now been bulldozed, so this is basically a much cooler mythical land. Honestly if the concept was presented without Avatar tied in, folks would be going bonkers over it. Claiming how imaginative Disney Imagineering was and how this new area would amaze like Tomorrowland did when it first opened.

Consider this the appetizer that will wet the appetite for what is ahead at the Studios. Cars and Star Wars expansions.
