THE_BEASTmaster
My cousin and I are planning our annual roller coaster trip this year. We are deciding which park to go to, Cedar Point or Six Flags Great America. We have never gone to Six Flags Great America, but we also want to check out Gatekeeper as well (we have been to Cedar Point before). We can only do one park this year. So I have 2 questions: 1. Which park would be good to go to? 2. What would be the best day(s) to go to one of these parks? Thanks!
The Interpreter
Cedar Point. By far. It handles large crowds better, has more variety, will be cheaper if you use Platinum Passes, and is truly one of the nation's best amusement parks. Avoid Fridays and Saturdays if at ALL possible.
THE_BEASTmaster
We usually go during the week. Last time we went, it was on a Wednesday (in August I think) and the park was very packed. Only got to ride Maverick, Raptor, and Magnum once that whole day. Would the beginning of the week be better, like Sunday- Tuesday?
The Interpreter
Others can answer that. Have you been to SFGAm before? If not, the equation changes some, though I'd still recommend Cedar Point unless adding new coasters and flats is very important to you. August is the pre-back to school rush. Creed Bratton
Early on in the Season like May or June, Sunday-Tuesdays are generally lighter compared to the remainder of the week at Cedar Point.
Browntggrr
Would the beginning of the week be better, like Sunday- Tuesday? We often will do a 1.5 day trip. Sunday late afternoon/ evening & all day Monday. Sundays in May & first two weeks of June & during Halloweekends are usually great times to visit.July & 1st two weeks of August will be the busiest of the season- no matter what day you go. Halloweekends Saturday are (weather pending) the busiest of the whole year. Visiting CP on "dead" days is not an exact science. Plan for the worst & hope for the best.
flightoffear1996
I go to Cedar Point every year and in my experience I found the park to be crowded (60min+waits for rides) pretty much any time other than Sundays in late Sept and Oct. I have also been to SFGAM and thought the park was okay but its no Cedar Point.
MDMC01
I've been to both and both parks are great (though Cedar Point's a bit better). I'm sure you'll have fun either way. If you do end up going to Six Flags, try Viper (it's their wooden coaster) and Revolution (a Delirium-like spinning ride). Also, make sure you get to Great America early as crowds are very light in the morning (at least they were when I went).
vortexfan
Six Flags Great America is a decent park but I find it really is a "regional" park in the sense that, while no coaster is necessarily bad, there isn't anything particularly noteworthy either. It does have the advantage of being near Chicago (which is a city I very much enjoyed visiting), but if this is solely a coaster trip I'd say go to Cedar Point. However, if you were asking between Cedar Point and Great Adventure, then I'd have a much harder time deciding between the two...
TheCrypt
I liked Great America a lot. It had a charm that Cedar Point didn't really have. They have a nice flat collection, and I was able to do all rides in a day. Batman: The Ride and Condor stood out to me as great rides that aren't replicated at Cedar Point. All in all, I recommend SFGA. They don't have Maverick or Top Thrill Dragster, but you have to remind yourself that you can have great fun without riding the tallest or most intense coasters (I think Flight Deck is a great example of this). Go big!
flightoffear1996
SFGA does have one of my fav. wooden coasters Viper. Very underrated.
westcoaster
Cedar Point, love going in June crowds seem better, but enjoy the park you choose!
vortexfan
SFGA does have one of my fav. wooden coasters Viper. Very underrated. I really liked Viper a lot when I visited, but I've heard that it's really a hit or miss sometimes. I also totally forgot about Whizzer. Such a wonderful classic coaster!
TombRaiderFTW
You people are killing me with this Great America talk... I got a pass for there this past Christmas, the wait is slowly killing me!
THE_BEASTmaster
Hey, guys, just want to say thanks for the replies. It looks as if Cedar Point might be the park we're going to go to. The only drawback is that we would have to go during the week in July or August because my paid vacation starts at the end of June. Now I could go to Six Flags Great America by myself in May on a weekend after I get off work. Hmmm...
74Gibson
Have you considered Fast Lane? If you're only doing one park trip and going during the busier part of the season, it could well be worth the extra cash.
THE_BEASTmaster
That actually slipped my mind, I forgot to tell him that earlier tonight. I'll have to let him know that tomorrow about the Fast Lane. Thanks for the reminder.
