Great Smoky Mountains Mountain Coasters

Featured Replies

Figured I'd start a thread to chat about the mountain coasters in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.

Have you been on any of them? What's your favorite? Least favorite?

Since my last visit (July) there have been 2 new coasters that have opened I'm excited to hopefully ride in a few weeks: "Hellbender" at Anakeesta and Lost Mine Mountain Coaster on Teaster Lane in Pigeon Forge.

I've been on the others in Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, and Gatlinburg. Out of the ones I've been on I really enjoy Wild Stallion at Skyland Ranch and Rail Runner at Anakeesta (which makes me feel like I'm going to be flung off the cart).

What are your thoughts on them?

I’ve been on Rail Runner at Anakeesta, and Mountain Flyer at Ober Mountain.

Between the two, I prefer Rail Runner. There is nothing like making it to the bottom of the hill on Rail Runner and questioning yourself on how you survived. :P

Ober Mountain however does have the Alpine Slide which is very fun, as well as the iconic cable car that takes you there. These and all the other attractions are included with the wristband. Unlike Anakeesta which up charges the coasters, and such.

I have only ridden one in the area and it was fantastic. It is called the Goat Coaster. Located at Goats On The Roof. It took a while to get up to the top but it was a super peaceful journey up. On the way down I actually got some airtime on a little airtime hill. Really fun going max speed down the mountain.

I looked into The Lost Mine Mountain coaster since it was right by our hotel and I heard great things about it. Especially about the theming. I ultimately decided on Goats On The Roof because come on who doesn’t want to see some goats on a roof.

I've ridden Moonshine and the Smokey Mt Alpine.  The former is a bit faster, both in ride time and actual mph speed, to me, and the later is longer (I think its the longest in the area, possibly the US).  The former is really good at night being so close to the Gatlinburg strip, too.

I rode Goats on the Roof's coaster last year. Was fun until it auto slowed down my sled. The goats and funky store at that location was worth the stop alone.

How you ended Rail Runner is how I did, "how did I survive?" lol. Ober is pretty cool, I loved the alpine slide!

When I was there in July, Lost Mine was still in the process of being built, I stayed at the Fairfield Inn two hotels down....really hoped to ride but it was no where near open lol! Goats On The Roof is interesting for sure. I do like the seclusion going up the mountain.

Moonshine to me was soooo short! Smoky Mountain Alpine I can't count how many times I've been on it, it's fun but meh. lol

I absolutely can't stand when I have a family in front of me....they always slow down which auto slows down the sled for blocking....I get it but I hate it lol.

I need to go back into the store.

I usually ride the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster in Pigeon Forge.  Mostly because it has good discounts on Groupon.  But it is a really fun coaster.

There wasnt anyone infront of me. I think I was only person on track, maybe couple people behind me at the start. I think it slowed me down due to speed. I held that baby full pull whole time. Could be my weight 280lbs with too much momentum the sled knew I was going too fast haha

The last time I rode it, was with a friend, we shared the sled and I swore we were going to fly off, so much fun!

Gotcha....I've had that happen maybe once myself. The only mountain coaster I've pulled my brakes to slow down was on Rail Runner at Anakeesta....I legit thought I was going to fly off haha.

@malem, @pianoman and I visited the smoky mountains at the beginning of the month.

We hit up several mountain coasters including:

Rocky Top, The Lost Mine coaster, Wild Stallion at Skyland Ranch, Hellbender and Rail Runner at Anakeesta.

We did ride The Lost Mine and Wild Stallion twice (day and night).

I have now been on each on in the area. My favorite, I do have to say is the Lost Mine....it's a nice long ride with awesome theming, including the queue and ride station. The speed is pretty great too!
