adam47303
I had a notion that would end winterfest having a new years eve celebration on International Street like they do on times square. Except you drop a lighted ball from the Eiffel Tower at the Stroke of Midnight. Before hand there is a Celebration going on during the course of the evening. This could be a week long event from December 26 through December 31, 2005, after the ball drops fireworks go off.
CoastersRZ
Well, the park isn`t open until midnight on New Year`s Eve. They close at 9. And plus the Eiffel Tower is decked out as a Christmas tree. I would imagine that the mood in the park that evening would be festive anyway since it is the new year`s eve. Or have the ball lowered from a boom on the side of the tower since there is a christmas tree present.
TheKlockster
That is a really neat idea though! I would love to see the park do something like this! They could turn drop zone into the ball drop. String lights all over the chair ring and drop it so it hits the bottom right at midnight. That would be awesome! TOPGUN1993
Have drop zone drop . LOL
CoastersRZ
A boom? While it is a cool idea in theory it is too expensive for the park to implement for only a one night event, which could be a slow night for Winterfest.

Joey
Drop zone drop would be crazy, they'd have to time it right and it's a lot faster than the one minute NYC ball. Would be neat if they could pull it off.

flightoffear1996
Yea I no excatly how they work but the question is if there is ice on them would the breaks magentic field be able to go threw the ice?
WooferBearATL
I've always thought that it would be a great idea to keep the park open unti about 1am on New Years and just party everyone's asses off.

Yes - unless the ice was so thick the brake fin itself couldnt fit through the gap!
adam47303
What? Do you have any idea how Drop Zone's breaks work? The Brakeson the Drop Zone are Hydrolic, and magnetic.
CoastersRZ
The main brakes on Drop Zone. The hysraulic brakes only glide the gondola to its final soft stop. Magnetic brakes, cannot stop a ride vehicle to a complete and total stop. If you watch Drop Zone do a test run, you will notice the magnetic brakes slow the train down to a certain speed. Then the gondola "glides" down to the bottom until it hits the hyraulic pistons.
HomerJay
I don't know how much I'd like a New Year's Eve celebration at PKI. Wouldn't it be pretty darn cold? Now, what might be interesting is if they had like live music and dancing in the Festhaus and turned it into one giant party!
WooferBearATL
That's what I was thinking as far as a whole event. They could have WKRC, WLWT or WCPO broadcast as they usually do. There could be Family events and Adult events in various venues. Done right, it could be something along the lines of events held at SeaWorld, Disney and Universal. TheRickster
Except those channels and the networks they are with have contracts to show other new years events like the big ball dropping and new years rockin eve etc. Therefor they would be unable to do a local event. I remember back in '92 watching one of the channels go back and forth between Times Square and Cincinnati's party on Fountain Square. WooferBearATL
Now with the power behind the Paramount and Viacom name, they could likely demand some very good entertainment. You could set up the major acts on International Street in front of the Eifel Tower. The audience could fill both sides of the street. You could make the Festhaus an area for adult entertainment and alcohol could be served. You could make Columbia Palace/Wings a kids entertainment area (Nick Cafe if that comes about) and do an early count down for the kids. I think that honestly, it could be a major event and could draw from all the tri-state area.

The Tri-State area could use this kind of publicity maybe if this succeeds I would like to see Mardi Gras come to PKI's International Street during spring break week. Placing the new years ball on the needle at the very top of the Eiffel Tower. Lower it from the top beacon to the bottom beacons where the arcs meet. The ball should be a disco ball from a roller rink with the lights on the tower's rooftop shining on the disco ball until its lowered placed on some pulleys and operated from the top platform from the right side. CoastersRZ
The only problem with that would be that the elevation change is insignificant, and unless you were in the parking lot, or a far distance from the tower, you wouldn`t even really notice a ball dropping that much. BoddaH1994
Don't play it down like it can't happen. I think we seen time and time again that anything's possible when it comes to Paramount's Kings Island. I mean, you guys didn't know about it and I said we'd be skating on the fountain this Winter, I would have been destroyed by people telling me it's impossible for one reason or another, but it clearly is and has been possible. The DZ idea isn't too bad. I'm not entirely certain how it would work, but it would be perfect. They could have the main party in the Festhaus and have an outdoor heated pourch on the AZ side to watch the actual "ball" or whatever drop. What they could do is have DZ raise every minute or so for an hour and have it reach the top and drop at midnight. That would be theatrical. Plus, with all of the possible constraints that the cold could give, all they would need to do is ensure that it worked properly and safely once. I'm not sure why skating on the fountain would be so hard for people to believe... It was a fixture at every other Winterfest in KI's history, so it's not exactly a new and radical idea. I am kind of surprised that PKI didn't plan something for New Year's Eve. I think it would be well received (regardless of whether there was a ball dropping from anywhere or not...) Maybe they'll consider it for next year.

I'm saying hypothetically as if it had never been done before. If anybody had posted that they would like to see that, or had predicted it happening everyone would have jumped on them. Another way that the ball on the tower's needle could be feasible is building a lighted ball around the needle itself. Just one minute before midnight, turn the tree off, then have the ball lit for the ball drop for 2006. Doesn't have to be anything elaborate.
