Gee...get ready for some great replys! Personally...and this coming from someone who used to not like coasters...the loop is actually the best (and least scariest) part of the ride. The SOB is ROUGH...do not sit "on the wheel"...which means sit in the middle of the car.

Good Luck!

On the SOB, for the best ride, as everyone will tell you, ride in the first car, second seat of that car. Also, if you can get by with it, try to leave your lap bar a bit loose, this acts as a buffer, and makes the ride smoother, at least for me it does.

When you go in the loop, its probably the smoothest part of the ride, and at first you feel a bit loose in your seat, and then as you complete the loop, it feels like you get pushed down.

I dont know any other way to describe it, but thats my description.

That is the car that we always sit in, and that's right. It's the best car to sit in.

Actually, I used to trash SOB any chance I got. My last ride, dare I say was smoother than The Beast... We weren't in the first car either.... I was in the 3rd car, back seat, right side.

For what it's worth, the maintenance crew did an outstanding job to help this coaster.

my 2 cents.

yeah basically what everyone else said

i did the same thing: middle of the very last car and it was enjoyable enough, and it did seem smoother than The Beast the day i rode it...

And it took me awhile to get my nerve up to get on SOB too, but im glad i did as it is now probably my favorite coaster i've ridden so far..

SOB is a great coaster. However, it is a bit rough, but nothing you can't handle. The loop is awesome and one of my favorite parts next to the Rose Bowl.

On a side note, my first looper was the Screamin' Demon. I was nervous while climbing the tower, but, after it was over, I loved it. It was also the first coaster I rode that went backwards.

The Son of Beast was actually smoother than The Beast my last trip (June 7th). I didn't notice all the roughness that I experienced last year. I had a headache last year after riding SOB. The Beast may need some re-tracking as I felt some crazy bumping that I had never experienced in the last 20 years I've rode it.

As far as the loop, no worries. It will be over quickly. The first helix on SOB is the wildest part of the ride in my opinion.

  • 2 weeks later...

There is a difference between scary and rough.

Rough can be not scary at all, but that doesn't make it smooth or enjoyable.

The loop is the only part of that thing I enjoy. It's been that way since my first ride.

My ONLY question when I ride that thing (with friends who want to) is "How bad will it be THIS time?" It has days when it is not as bad as others. But to me, at least, to call it enjoyable is not credible. Kind of like comparing trips to the dentist for a filling. Some are better than others, but I'd take a day at the opera over any of them. And I don't even like opera.

It's NOT that scary at all. The loop is actually very fast and smooth. As a matter of fact - the loop is steel - not wood. Hence, it is very safe. Just enjoy the ride and relax.

Incorrect good sir, the loops has wooden track with a steel support structure, the track is wooden, hence why it is a wooden coaster and not a hybrid. Steel supports/track do not make the ride any more safe than if it was all wooden track/supports.
