The Changing Face of the Island.

um, yeah. I'm going to have to disagree, King Maple. Take a close look at those pictures. The second one is taken noticeably to the right. The tree in the very left of the most recent picture can be seen in last weekend's as well..just without leaves, in the middle of the picture from the 23rd.

I fear K.I is becoming more like Cedar Point already; note the lack of trees around the new construction!

Nothing wrong with looking more like Cedar Point, imo Cedar Point is much nicer looking as far as landscape and cleanliness goes than KI in the last decade, could we get a big lake to add to it :)

I'm sure CF will do a much better job with landscaping then Paramounts, bring KI back to the beautiful park it used to be.

I can enjoy Cedar Point with the best of them. That being said, there were many things that Paramount Parks did far better than Cedar Point has in my lifetime. Restroom cleanliness, season pass processing, tolls collection, guest relations, and yes, even landscaping come immediately to mind.

JMO but I thought the park was much prettier in the 80's, but I can't lay all the blame on Paramount's I don't think the Linder group did wonders for it either. I will say the one thing I liked about Paramount's was the Gold Pass, much better benefits than CP's Cool Joe Club, I'm not sure whether that was at KI before Paramount's (as my 1st season pass was in the mid 90's) but I'm guessing not.

There is no question that Kings Island had better landscaping pre-Lindner. Then again, Cedar Point used to have beautiful gardens, too. The entire business has changed markedly. Elitches used to be known for its gardens in its old location, as was Coney Island. Part of it is just a change in the times.

Most people no longer go to theme parks for a flower show.

Speaking of flower shows at theme parks, I have heard that Cypress Gardens does up a dandy garden expo! I can believe it too! The one thing that they deffinately specialize in is their landscaping. The shrubs in the shapes of animals are awesome!

I'm not old enough to remember Old Coney, but from the pictures and video's i've seen they buried them all.

My first time going to Cedar Point was in 97, almost went there once as a kid in the mid 80's I regret that we canceled that trip, as much as I like it now, I would have loved to experienced the old park, much like I did with KI in the early 80's

Yeah, thanks for knocking Park Services and Landscaping and assuming we don't try our hardest to make the park look nice. Not to mention you just put the guys who re-decorated the water park (which looked like crap even BEFORE Paramount bought the parks), added the scenery on Tomb Raider and Flight of Fear and a few others, and decorated pretty much the entire park for FearFest to shame.

But, then again, it's obvious that you don't come for the cleanliness of the park; you come for the Big Freakin' Massive Coasters of Awesomely Huge Bigness.

Yes I love big coasters, but there is much more than that, one of my biggest complaints that I give of all parks is the lack non wild rides such as the antique cars and nice train rides in such I like a good variety so no I don't come just for the big coasters, example a is my recent thread on how I miss the old log flume rides.

I wasn't saying the trees were removed, I was remarking at how the recent construction of both Paramount and Cedar Fair has left the expanded areas without and new trees or landscaping, just weeds.

I am not sure what your point is.

In both of your picture that you claim to be just weeds; what do you want there? I see some access roads. I can see some smaller plots of land. But I don't see an area that could actually sustain a good amount of tree growth.

CF is in the amusment park business. They are not in the landscape business. Even though it is great to have trees to shade us from the blazing sun, we pay money to enter the park to be thrilled by the rides they have built.

Please take a look at two other examples:

White Water Landing's opening year:

And again in 2003:

You can clearly see that CF does try and use trees for other things than just being cut down for more rides.

I am all for landscaping. When I go to a park like BGE, I notice the landscaping they have. But rest assured, I will not drive over 500 miles to BGE, or 350 miles to KI just to look at their trees.

C'mon now, don't dis the greenery of Ohio... even if they are the most bland trees in the nation. Were not near any lake, or ocean so we don't have any lush looking trees, And trees in Dollywood differ from KI. It is the area we live in.

I went to Dollywood last month and spent an hour looking at the plants. Dollywood has a green thumb for plants!

Kings Island has trees surrounding the park, there is not much in the park itself, but it is the atmosphere that makes up for it.

now in the landscaping defense... take the trees on International Street, for instance. It doesn't look as good as it did in the 80's because these trees are some 25 years older. After some years they tend to look "overgrown" and maybe they are. Some day they'll become too large and will need to be removed and smaller/younger trees will be planted. Home landscaping is the same. That job you pay thousands for in year 1 tend to look shabby come year #5.

I think landscaping may be the wrong word. Maybe decor, i'm not sure. It's more than just flowers and trees to me it's how you decorate the park. Fountains, bridges, entrances to different areas, fences, gates, lakes, rivers, streams all of these things, that I think have declined since the 80's, and oh yeah I'm not a big fan of hollywood so i'm sick of movie poster decor. I miss the old amusement park/non advertising of a product feel that was here before paramount.
