Dear Friends

I just got word on the news in Dayton that ACE has chosen The Racer as the landmark coaster of all time and the The Beast as the best coaster in the world and finally Kings Island as the all the best park

in the world because of it's collection of coasters. What a way to celebrate 35 years of fun.

Take care God bless

Marcia

Yes, The Racer was officially christened an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark today. It joins The Beast with that honor. Kings Island is the only park that has two rides which are considered ACE Roller Coaster Landmarks.

The annual ACE convention, Coaster Con, is occurring at the park right now, which might be why that news station thought that about KI. But ACE did not proclaim KI as the best park in the world. ACE president Mark Cole did say that Kings Island is a great park with a good collection of roller coasters, but he did not say that it was the 'best' park in the world.

That's pretty unreal. Was Beastie ever an ACE Coaster Classic? I thought it was but had it taken away because they added seatbelts or something like that. Has anyone seen the placement of the landmark plaque for The Racer or are there any pictures? I know The Beast is before the entrance in the landscaping. I'm guessing at the bottom it says, "During The Racer's Thirty-fifth Anniversary Season" like it says the 25th on The Beast's.

Gotta love ACE physics:

The value of a park is directly proportional to its roller coaster collection.

I would love to know what station you got that news from. I believe ACE has designated Racer as a landmark coaster joining The Beast. Don't you love how news stations can get something so simple so wrong?

It's WDTN Channenl 2 in Dayton,Ohio

Take care God Bless

Marcia

Landmark status was created for coasters that are of great historical significance, but do not qualify for ACE Coaster Classic status due to changes in operational methods or restraints. Given modern realities, there are very few coasters that still qualify for ACE Coaster Classic status. Ironically, the Big Dipper and Lil' Dipper at Camden Park come immediately to mind. The elimination of big old brake levers for controlling the trains and the installation of seat dividers have all but eliminated all but a very few coasters from Coaster Classic consideration. It is a designation that has, in my humble opinion, outlived its usefulness. (By the way, Cedar Point still displays its plaque for Coaster Classic status for Blue Streak, which very obviously no longer qualifies...)

Yeah, I have thought that too...

But according to ACE's website,

PREVIOUS ACE COASTER CLASSICS

The following coasters were awarded ACE Coaster Classic plaques, but subsequent equipment, design, or operating procedures changes have made the coaster ineligible for ACE Coaster Classic status:

* Beastie. Paramount's Kings Island, Kings Mills, OH USA

What ever happened to safety being the most important thing?

So the park had to make a decision between being safe or losing the precious ACE Coaster Classic status. Whoopdeedoo.

I would honestly tell ACE to keep their plaque. 90% of the people that are guests in the park have no idea what ACE is anyway.
