Geauga Lake Sells All Their Rides...
dare-to-fly replied to FOFirehawkFAN's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Wood coasters that exert an excessive amount of force need to have trims so that the coasters do not destroy themselves as well as cost the park excessive maintenance costs. Enthusiasts hate trims, as do you. But enthusiasts also comprise about 1% of a park's attendence. So parks take the lesser of two evils. Trim the coasters that need it, at the expense of those 1% being upset. That is EXACTLY the point. Racer DOES NOT need trims. -

Ode to the moderator...shouldn't this be a violation? As for SE, I found that it still had plenty of umph in 02, despite what certain people may say. There is no arguing that Big Dipper from Geauga Lake had plenty of airtime, and it ran for way longer still. Yes, it ran with fewer cars...however my point is still the same...live and let live. If you are willing to fund a little bit of maintenance, the coasters can live on for as long as you want to keep them alive. There is no need for extra trims that will take the fun out of the ride. You are not going to convince me that the trims are needed, or that they are a good thing. -

Define a double-post and triple post and I'll gladly use the edit button to alleviate this problem. Sorry--now I'm with you. Can't find a delete post button or I would fix this one as well! -

I suppose my question would be how many of them include ride-sucking trim brakes. I can't answer for the rest SoB would be an extreme caliber! At any rate. -

No, not entirely. You have OVERLY CAPITALIZED things that do not need CAPITALIZATION! And smoothness not being an issue? I dont even want to know where you pulled that thought from. The smoothness of a coaster, which is in many cases related to the maintenance of a ride, is a direct reason for the adding of trims, to take some strain off maintenance, and yes provide for a smoother ride. Whether you agree with that or not, that is one of the many reasons that trims are used! Which you just voided your old arguement. We are back to The Screechin' Eagle ran for eighty years without any trims and was fine. One of the best...I might add. And, as long as I have a caps lock key I'll capitalize anything I please if the point merits. (Which I haven't used for the last several posts!) -

Enthusiasts complained enough over the one that's there. I'll hate to hear them if this is true. It certainly will not continue as #1. -

You don't realize how much it subtracts from the ride until you ride it when the brake doesn't catch, without it, or at Halloween Haunt when it is running full trains for hours on end. After having airtime on every single hill on the course at HH, I have seen what Racer is meant to be. Have you? Also, the issue is that it doesn't need to be there. As stated, The Screechin' Eagle ran for eighty years. The Racer is still fairly young when you put the two side by side. -

I might add that I am always willing to listen to people's insights as long as they are worth listening to. I'm glad I haven't made too many typos or you'd argue with that too! -

And not just that Dare-to-fly, but every angle under the moon as well! Especially if the angle is of importance to the discussion at hand! Whether I particularly agree with that opinion or not! P.S. The Screechin' eagle hasn't neccesarily been the smoothest ride ever created, nor had the park ever really had the kind of money it would take to chop a hill and create a trim. Trims are put on coasters for reasons, and if you can't understand the park reasons behind that, perhaps you should leave those trimmed rides to those of us who enjoy them! It's a wooden coaster, not a Cadillac. And...the fact that it wasn't smooth was not related to what we are insanely arguing over. The issue here is whether or not trims are neccessary or not. Screechin' Eagle ran just fine for eighty years and then some in 02. If the park would have had to pay more to have the trim--then that is an argument in MY favor not yours. And...if that is the case, THANK GOD THEY DIDN'T. Incedently... Creating arguments that don't need to be created is not a character trait. If you don't agree with the trim brake discussion, then quit trying to tick the rest of us off! -

What this means is exactly what I said. You know that it takes something special to be voted number 1 wooden coaster on the planet two years in a row! On a typical wooden coaster, you will find that trims are not typically neccessary. It should also be noted the one on Voyage is minor unlike the ride-sucking trims that KI's rides seem to be equipped with these days. It should also be noted that there is potential for that trim to be removed one maintenance on the one rough curve is complete. I don't know whether that will ever happen, but if not--the trim on the Voyage is not a ride-sucking break, it is a minor slow. One that is about equivalent to that of The Racer....however Voyage has more than enough steam to get back up to the insane level immediately after the trim. Racer is a smaller out and back. -

And...for your benefit Cory Butcher I would have used The Screechin' Eagle as an example if I didn't KNOW that you would use the arguement that they closed, since you love to argue every angle under the sun for the sake of arguing. -

Have you ridden Voyage lately? Or at all? It's insane. I'm talking about normal caliber wooden coasters. If you're going to use that arguement about Stricker's Grove, we'll use Blue Streak at Cedar Point. It doesn't have trims, and it is the oldest operating coaster at Cedar Point! Seeing my point yet? -

Let me make my point to you even more clear. If the brake doesn't need to be there, then it SHOULDN'T be there. Kings Island certainly pulls enough attendance to fund a slightly higher maintenance bill to keep the coasters going. The trim on The Racer was not originally there, and thus DOES NOT NEED TO BE. The ones on The Beast may have been there originally and may have been put there for a purpose, but there ARE TOO MANY! As for FoF, the ride time makes no difference to me if it is a more intense ride. With this logic, they would put a trim on Top Gun, and add it to the collection of many rides that they break beyond reason and cause even further hell with the reputation. And...as to the ridiculous point about having no ride or no park...etc. IT IS INTERESTING TO ME THAT VERY FEW OTHER PARKS HAVE RIDICULOUS TRIMS ON THE RIDES IN SUCH STUPID PLACES. EVEN SMALL PARKS THAT HAVE LESS ATTENDANCE AND LESS FUNDING. I.E. STRICKER'S GROVE, LAKEMONT PARK, IDLEWILD--YOU SURE DON'T SEE THEM TRIMMING THEIR CLASSIC COASTER!!!!!!! Hopefully by now you get my point because I will NEVER get yours. It's fine if they are neccessity, but dumb ones don't need to exist. Many of the current trim brakes are fine, if they are just dialed back!!!!! -

dare-to-fly replied to FOFirehawkFAN's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON for trim brakes on a wooden out and back coaster. ESPECIALLY when there is NO NEED for it. That trim was NOT there for the majority of the life of the coaster!!!!!!!! In short--if you are going to have a roller coaster, then have a roller coaster. If you just want to RUIN the ride with all of the UNNECCESSARY trim brakes, leave it to a park that will take care of its coasters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kings Island already has developed a reputation for trimming all of their rides and it is absolutely no wonder. There are VERY FEW rides at KI that do not have trims. At least they had the good sense to stop using the STUPID one on The Beastie later on this season, as it was not on the last couple of times I rode it on closing weekend. I can't vouch for earlier than that, but in closing weekend, it was not in use. Also, Son of Beast's trim brake, and Flight of Fear's trim brake (and ESPECIALLY THAT ONE) are on so hard that it takes all of the steam out of the ride leading to somewhat of a let down! Unless you can't tell--I am a trim brake hater. They are the number one cause of a loss of rank of a coaster for me, maintenance or not! Try an arguement that works with me next time! Also, the argument that The Beast doesn't have any more than it used to makes ABSOLUTELY no difference to me. The point is they need to LEAVE, whether they were there for seven years or twenty-seven! Sorry if this sounds hyper, but this is a sensitive nerve that is very easy to strike. I have no patience for making a great ride that could be even greater were it not for the trims! -

I also RESENT the fact that the logo for The Racer isn't on the front of the trains. And...I also am hoping that the trains for Beast and Racer STAY. I do NOT share CF's love of G trains. Also, the seatbelts (if we must have them) are much easier to use as retractable than the usual way they do the g trains. -

And I still think it's crap that they removed a hill at all! I first noticed it in a you-tube video and frieked. I had some sort of ridiculous reaction about, "what is this" "Racer isn't original" "reprofileing my favorite ride" and all kinds of other things. At any rate--yes I know the claim about doing that for extra brakes--bs. There is only one there, and the brake run for Racer is huge. As far as the pictures--Racer looks absolutely beautiful in those photos and I wish it was still painted to look like this. You are right, it does look more cared for. Personally I think it is a very under-rated coaster for having the best airtime in the park. Incedently, in case you can't tell or haven't picked up on it, Racer forward is my favorite ride at Kings Island and so I'm a little sensitive about it. I look forward to many more wonderful seasons. However, I can't say that it is the first place I go at KI, because The Beast has to be first, as tradition goes. And...if you're wondering how Racer ranks above The Beast for me, airtime is what gets it. But my belly ache is the same on both--get rid of the friekin' trim brakes. Three of four on The Beast are unneccessary, and the one on Racer is UNCALLED FOR and senseless. Oh, the opinions! -
This makes me want to scream! Ahhhhh! I can't help it. I have trouble taking change. The intersection probably only gets backed up every once in a while, right? So we have to have construction to make a royal mess, no doubt in the middle of the busiest part of the season, and this construction will have to last four or five years just like the mess on I-275. Ahhhh! It makes me nausious just thinking about it.

Save the Date: Kings Island's 2008 Opening Day!

I wouldn't mind being one of those so called "newbies" this year, but we'll see. -
I got the privelege to visit the park many times in the 90's and was there several times when the park opened in 2002, including the first day they were open. I very much miss the park, and I was blessed with the opportunity to swing by there and take some pictures from the parking lot on Jan 3rd. Wow, the memories! It will be sorely missed by more than just I. Incedently, there are other rides that have been sold in addition to this list. The Scrambler, and perhaps the Tilt-a-Whirl but I can't remember for sure, were sold to a local carvival group. Calypso is still thrilling riders at Fun Spot Amusement Park in northern Indiana. This is also the current location for the kiddie Ferris Wheel, and the tubs from the flying scooters are being used with the frame from Fantasy Farm. I really wish that something would happen that would allow those rides that remain to live on. Especially one of the best wooden roller coasters on the planet, The Screechin' Eagle; bar none the best log flume I've ever been on, Raging Thunder; and The Whip, as they are becoming very hard to find.

Come again? Please elaborate on this, as I've never seen or heard of this...need details. Also--Changing the name of The Racer...uh...I think not! As a change-hater, I don't approve. -
But the pain lasts for days! Quite honestly, contrary to everyone else's opinion, I enjoyed my rides on SoB this past season. Especially the night rides. My favorite was the one in the rain. It was like it had ice on the rails.
-
no they didnt mind. most of them dont know whats goin on anyways, others were happy to see the show. One even told me that they wish they could ride The Racers on last time. SCREEEEEEEEEAAAAMM! I'm glad to know this is true. But...pet peeve here! The ride you are referring to is The Racer! There may be two sides to the ride, however there is no "s" on the name! Since The Racer is my favorite ride in the park, I'm a little sensitive about it.

My system is to save all of my spare change all summer and winter long, and then at the beginning of the spring, go to the bank and drive the bank ladies nuts with all of the rolls of coins I cash in. This has earned the nickname "The Cedar Fund" which started out as being short for Cedar Point and is now upgraded to being short for Cedar Fair. Other than that, I save as much as I possibly can, and charge the gas to the plastic. To save on lodging, I sleep in the car (not an alternative suitable for everyone I know). Incedently, Wal-Mart is very open about the fact that they don't care if you stay in their parking lots. Meijer has signs posted against it. Yet another reason to hate Meijer, which I typically do. It is also another thing that can annoy you about Wal-mart. darn them. That's always where you end up for anything.
