Diamondback Construction Thread (Updated 3-19-09)

Deers? I love the word. We should totally make it the plural form Anyway, I find it interesting that the highest sections of the lift hill have a full red staircase, not the unpainted metal. Not that it matters at all... just something I just noticed. Wonder why. -

Going back momentarily to the weather discussion. Cincy (and Ohio in general) often have later (not by calendar but by the weather) winters than a lot of cities. It takes til January or so for anything significant to happen (usually). And while I'm almost positive Cincy has never had 3 feet of snow, we did have a storm in the late 90's (that I believe was the record in Cincy) that dumped just under 2 feet of snow. Think about last winter even, I know here in C'bus we had 22 inches at the very END of March; and then it all melted in 2 days because it quickly hit 50 degrees. Cincy may have had a new record set in that storm last year, but I'm not totally sure. As to how this relates to DB, I would assume they plan on having MOST done by Thanksgiving because this is when the temps start falling. And the COMPLETELY done my Christmas, because it is usually after this time up until mid/late March as to when we can have a significant snow fall. Nothing would delay construction more than a bunch of snow, so why not get it done ahead of time? Minor work (station, etc) can proceed in snow, but something tells me putting up track and supports would be near impossible. Getting it done before Christmas almost guarantees it doesn't fall behind schedule, and testing can begin once the snow disappears! -

The same thing could happen on Vortex the track comes right up next to the fence. You could easily throw something at the train. Kind of off topic of the topic, but relating to these comments. I've seen a handful of teenie-somethings throwing coins at the trains in Millennium Force's line right in front of the Unload station. I was stunned that people can be so stupid. It seemed as though they succeeded too because you could hear the clanking. Luckily I didn't see anyone who seemed as though they had been hit. I was hoping these stupid @$$es would be seen by an employee, as they did it at least 3 or 4 times, but no one did. I'm sure it happens more than we realize, but apparently not usually successful as the park would have done something a long time ago, especially at Vortex. I guess we will see about DB. -

I believe there are in fact other members of the OSU engineering group who post on these boards. I am one of them and really enjoy the group. Unfortunately, due to a ridiculous class schedule, and work filling the remaining gaps, I've not been able to attend hardly any of the meetings or any of the trips yet this year. Hopefully my schedule has more free time in it next quarter, because this group is awesome! -
SFMM Annouces Terminator Wooden Coaster
pyrocoasterkid replied to RailRider's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Since when does the material to build the ride have to represent the name/theme of the ride? There are tons of bird themed rides out there that our wood or steel (Raptor, Talon, Raven). The new Tony Hawk rides are steel, even though I think of wooden ramps and skateboards. Mantis is steel even though I would think more of a forest when thinking of an animal like that. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples out there, but I think you get the idea. I really don't think a theme/name is rarely if ever based on the material to build a ride. -
I went to the season pass renewal. She said it would cost me $140, and handed me back my old pass, and said you're good to go for next year. So those of you who got a new identical pass, I'm not quite sure why. It seems smart from any standpoint to just update an existing card. Instead of getting a new pic, card, and all every year, just update an old one. It's seems smart from a business stand point too. I was surprised when it happened, but I personally like the idea. I am however holding on to my receipt, just like the rest of you until I make sure this goes over smoothly. Something tells me they wouldn't implement the plan if they didn't think it was going to go smoothly.

Today I went to KI to get my pass renewed, and I wondered back to DB to check out the construction and I can even list all the stupid comments I heard. My favorite by far was: "yea it'll probably have a few loops, I mean look how tall it's going to be!" Where's the logic in that? Height and loops are not related in any way. If anything, almost the opposite is true. Taller coasters are almost always inversion-less.

WOW! My question was answered! I'm not sure how many people asked, but I asked him to have the camera moved a little to see the lift, and wahlah! -
You've got Diamondback questions, he's got Diamondback answers!

Hopefully everyone asks for a realignment of the WebCams to see the lift hill. I know that's what I asked. -

Ha, that's a joke. So glad USC won. How is it that as a resident of Cincinnati, you can have hatred for OSU? I've never understood why there is such a hatred of OSU in Cincy in comparison to every other part of Ohio, and even alot of the country. It makes no sense; there is no reason for it. It's a STATE team, thus a city in the state should not be so hateful (envious) of OSU. So there's been alot of chokes lately. Who cares? It's still one of the most elite football teams. If someone can give me a good reason, I'd love it. Especially in rooting for a team from the West coast. I can understand why in parts of the country there are people who root for whoever is playing OSU, but it shouldn't happen from a city in OHIO. Even if you don't like them, you should still be hoping they do well. -

Unless I'm wrong, the crane is a 300ft crane... Being that the ride is 230ft, the crane would need to be taller than that... -

I said the exact same thing he did. I never said they moved it with motors; I just said they moved it (crane or something) so they can more easily install the middle brake run piece. -

It's the transfer track piece.... thus it slides side to side. They prolly moved it to see if it slides, or to make it easier installing the current piece. -

I never said it wasn't exciting, because it definately is. But, heck, in my opinion, watching every minute would make it boring. IMO, coming back every day or 2 to see is MORE exciting, because a NOTICEABLE amount of work has been done since my last visit. -

I don't have to sit here and watch the webcam every minute of the day to be just as excited to have this ride open. And to ask why I'm even a member is just dumb. Whether or not I watch the webcam every minute doesn't prove anything. My point is, there is much more productive things I, or anyone can be doing with their life. We don't need minute to minute updates, just like monroe said. It's like watching paint dry, and getting a play by play of that. I mean is everyone so bored with their lives that they are watching a webcam all day? -

I was thinking the exact same thing. People, we don't need a post everytime the crane rotates, lifts a piece up, or whatever. Like it was previously said, this is gonna happen quite a bit for the next few months. Chill out, and find something else to do! I'm just as excited for this ride as anyone, but I could care less each time the crane moves or track is placed. There is better things to do then watch the webcam all day! -
I honestly though mystery mine was only mediocre... the 2nd half was in fact amazing (the drop, flame, and inversions), but the 1st half was slow, and very boring... However, I LOVED Thunderhead... AMAZING ride. Great pix

I would say the colors have nothing to do with the whole "if read touches yellow" rhyme. Neither of those snakes has anything to do with a Diamonback, which leads me to believe the park did it just to make it stand out. Either way, I really like it. Also, jonathon, if you read the stats, the 2nd drop is not bigger than the 1st, even though it does drop into the valley (I'm not totally sure if this is what you were saying, but I'll clarify anyway). The hill isn't as tall and almost drops as far, but not quite. The 1st drop is 215' and the 2nd drop is 193'. Which is still pretty huge for a 2nd drop.

This is my new desktop: Personally, I think this is one of the best ride logos I have ever seen (previously my favorite was Voodoo)!

The vertical construction here http://www.KICentral.com/photos/displayima...m=254&pos=2 is definately the transfer track. You can see those little triangular lips that are about 2/3's of the way up on our coaster, also on Nitros transfer track(just to the side of the track, and below the platform): http://www.rcdb.com/ig1106.htm?picture=3 Besides, track supports are always underneath stations: http://www.KICentral.com/photos/displayima...m=254&pos=1 not the I beam shape used to hold up the track on the transfer track. Even more obvious is the amount of electrical conduit and all that a station needs has been in place there for a long time now.

I would presume it was just to keep them filled to keep them from filling with water, animals, or other debris.... And to answer your second question: Yes. But this is the best example I could find with the limited number of supports available: http://www.kiextreme.com/gallery/albums/pr...08/IMG_2516.jpg http://www.rcdb.com/ig2662.htm?picture=3

Sorry for the double post, but not to nitpick: It's UNFORTUNATELY, and MANEUVER. You had two words and I only had one. I would say that you need to check your own spelling before you start playing teacher with others. Wow, I did put a smiley face. Chill. I wasn't trying to be mean or anything. Besides, it's not the same. My mistake was a few typos (because I type too quick for my own good), while your mistake seemed to be misinformation. And since I love the plane, I wanted to KINDLY correct you (so you knew). I felt I had made that obvious, and as I said, was not trying to be mean. A mistake is a mistake, whether it is made because you type too quick, or you are not thinking about what you are typing so it is the SAME. The post was made for a different reason other than the Raptor, if you would have read the post and understood it, you would have known that. I would have caught it latter any ways and corrected it. Since I love my father, I will only say: Leave the moderating to the mods, I am KINDLY correcting you (so you know). In no way shape or form was I moderating. But I'll leave at it this.... I figured I was helping, but I guess not. Anyway, is there anyway I can get the top view of the Raptor in 1280x800.
