BoddaH1994
Saturday, April 19th, is a park sellout day.
Reclaimer
Really? Obsession? The "Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!" thing on Dragster is part of the theme of drag racing and such. Kings Island happens to open on a Sunday this year, rather than a Saturday, simply because a company decided to pony up the money to buy out the park on what would've been opening day. It's not an obsession with Sunday that changed KI's opening day...It's an obsession with money, and I think Cedar Fair can justify that obsession. I don't know the details on normal opening weekend numbers and what it costs to rent out the park, but the weather in April can be iffy, and if that weekend happens to be kinda crappy, attendance on a normal operating day, and thus income, would be down. Since a private company bought out the park that day, they are guaranteed to make a decent chunk of change, even if it rains all day. Browntggrr
^^^^ CP opened on Sundays for many years. Saturdays were sold to Longaberger Baskets. So the official opening day was always Sunday. This created many issues with some of the new ride seats that were put up for auction by the American Red Cross as "Be the First to Ride." Longaberger has since not bought out CP's first day for a couple of years now. Weather or not it was because of the auction issue, I am unsure. Browntggrr
PFFFF we got nothing new. stupid management team! We don't know that yet. And even if there was nothing new at the park for 2008, would it really matter?

CoastersRZ
Its amazing. About five years ago, the park was opening on the first weekend in April! Now they have pushed back opening weekend to the third weekend in April. But, compared how opening days used to be, we should be lucky the park is even open in April. Back when Coney was still open, it was rare that they started opening up for weekends before the traditional summer season started with Memorial day weekend. Snake Attack!
Selling out the park on opening day doesn't seem like a good idea. There are many new employees on these days who really don't know what they are doing creating long ride lines, food lines and overall confusion. The light crowds on opening day are kind of nice. Cory Butcher
but, from a revenue stand point it makes tons of sense. Also, the employees have to learn somehow, out of the pan and into the fire. Those long lines wont be noticed as much by those attending a company picnic as they would by a guest who paid full price to attend the park. Jasper
Oh boy oh boy oh boy!!! The best thing about this is that i have absolutely no baseball on sundays and i have already got my 2008 season pass so i am set to go.
CoastersRZ
The whole new employee thing is the reason the park used to have dry run days before the park opened to the public. These dry run days eventually turned into season pass holder days. It provided the employees an opportunity to get used to their new job, as well as to make sure the rides were functioning at 100% capacity. And since there were not people paying full price admission to get into the park, they didn`t have to worry about angry guests due to the lack of quality service. However, these dry run and season pass days fell by the wayside as a result of budget cutting.

There are many new employees on these days who really don't know what they are doing creating long ride lines, food lines and overall confusion. The light crowds on opening day are kind of nice. That could be the exact reason (along with revenue) to sell the park out to a company. Chances are the park will not be at capacity, which will make it easier for the "greenhorns". cholderfield
this may be a dumb question, but how busy is the park on opening day? I know it isn't generally busy april into may, but i didn't know if opening day was an exception?
PKIVortex
Last year opening day the weather was perfect, it was pretty busy. It all depends on the weather on how busy it will be or not. But I have feeling since it's on a Sunday it will be pretty slow, at least the first part of the day.
Browntggrr
^ You are right. No big rides for '08. I doubt many tourists. More locals than anything.

SOB_TOM
I agree. A park sellout on "opening day" is a great way to break in the newbies. Also, the dry run days were not the days that were used to see if everything was 100%. Maintenance does that starting in Feburary.

Also, the dry run days were not the days that were used to see if everything was 100%. Maintenance does that starting in Feburary. Dry run days allowed rides people to be come familiar with their rides, games how the games operated and practice barking, merch to put finishing touches on their shops and for the food folk to get the stands cleaned and set up. It also provided the opportunity for everyone to be fitted for their uniforms so that the wardrobe ladies could do any tailoring through the week. It allowed all the other departments the opportunity to check out all the rides for the season.
PKIVortex
Yes on Dry Run Day it was nice, since everyone was scheduled they gave everyone like an hour to walk around the park to ride rides, paid of course.
