When Will The Lights Go Out For The Beast? (or ON!)

The Beast has become a Legendary Icon to Rollercoaster Enthusists around The World. It's famous for it's mouth swallowing first drop, speeds in excess of 65mph and the double helex finally. Altogether it brings one mean lashing to those unexpecting riders. What certainally rounds out The Beast as extraordinary is how after sunset it becomes wildly untame...it calls out to its riders one by one. It yearns for your presence and willingly...you obey! It's growl can be heard deep into the forrest, echoing in your ears...as an oncoming fear churns in your stomach. You approach the darkness and the scent of a musky nightfall reaches inside your every breath. You slowly ascend above the treetops and for one brief moment it becomes silent...then...terror overcomes your innermost being as you plunge into a pitch black oblivion as unmakeable objects rush past you. Your body has no control as the wind wisks every breath away from you...you try to scream and nothing comes out. You wonder when will this end and as you slow down, you begin to feel relieved that you survived. You catch your breath as if someone or somethings picks you out of your latest doom...you slowly climb out of the forrest. Waiting...wondering...what lurks ahead. Click...click...click...click goes the metronome under your seat. Atlast...for one, brief moment...you see a slice of Heaven. Oh, it's Kings Island you see, familiar territory and all it's beautiful splender...it's colors meshing in the background. You hear music and laughter...a sense of normalcy has awaken your senses. Then...it begins to go ALL WRONG. Something has turned against you and blindness takes its toll. You begin to worry as you feel your life begining to plunge past you. You feel your seat shift to the left as if The Beast has it's claws in you and wants to shake you loose and swallow you whole. You hear screaming all around you...and it won't stop. You hold on for dear life and then it happens...it engulfs you and everyone around you. Shaking and growling as it takes you inside the pit of The Beast's stomach. It sucks you in as it numbs you. You have nowhere to go. You begin to relax and accept your fate...you close your eyes and at that moment...it releases you. You're free. It lets you live to tell another tale. You're safe now. You're back under the shelter house's safe keeping...although you know, The Beast still awaits alone somewhere for it's next victim.

It is my concern that the park will 'someday' push itself back behind 'Vortex' and next to The Beast. With it all lit up with rides and games, The Beast at night will no longer be of existence. Does ANYBODY have the same disheartening feeling about this and where could KI expand and protect our 'National Treasure'?

When Diamondback was announced park representatives were very adamant with the fact that ride experience on The Beast would not be affected. Clearly it's on their mind, so I would say it won't happen any time soon.

I wish the experience of entering the park were as much on their minds. The music they're playing at the front gate/International Street/NU, etc., is just killing me! <_<

I think they'll expand northward (X Base) years before they begin encompassing Beast.

That was a very good description of a Beast night ride. Good Job!

i must agree, it even gave me goosebumps when i read it. excilent job, you captured everything down to the smell, and i too would hate to see The Beast surrounded by more lights then it already is now.

I really believe they will continue to do as they did with Diamondback and leave The Beast a wide berth. They seem to understand what an amazing ride it can give at night.

However, I've been disappointed to ride it with the lights in the center of the double helix on, which makes a ride through the tunnel the same as it is during the day. Luckily this has only happened to me once this year, I'm hoping it was a fluke! Even with the trim brakes that we all love to hate, I still feel The Beast is one of (if not the) most amazing night rides there is.

Wow. Nice story. I also think The Beast will stay by itself out in the woods for quite some time.

While talking about The Beast and Diamondback, I would like to say something I noticed. While riding The Beast a couple weeks ago, I realized how far down it goes into a valley. At one point I looked up and I could see the hammerhead turn on Diamondback, and it looked as high as Diamondback's lift hill does if you stand near it!

Dontcha just LOVE The Beast!!!!!? :) :) :DB)

As much as I hate to say it, I believe The Beast will be gone before they start building back that far...

I see them expanding X-Base first.

After 30 years, and as well as it is still running I would be shocked if it were to be taken out. Even more so if it would be taken out when still holding the record for the longest wooden roller coaster in the world.

To me what gets me about The Beast is if you go on top of Eiffel Tower you can for the most part see every single ride in the park from there except The Beast. Once the trees have gained their leaves all you can see is the top of lift 2 and the incline of lift 1. You cant see the ride before you experience it.

If you sit on the left side of Diamondback and look to your left (kinda upside down and under the track) as you're going through the hammerhead you can see the double helix very clearly. It also gives you an interesting perspective of it! (Thanks to Jackson for pointing this out to me!)

Well the area by the station used to have water/be a small pond. That was before you exited the way you currently do. You used to exit on the path that now serves as a maintenance road and re-emerge on the midway to the right of the entrance, not the left as it is now. There used to be water flowing in the trough structure adjacent to the station. Issues with removing trash and stagnant water being a breeding ground for mosquitoes were some issue why it was removed.

Yes, it is 30 years old and still going strong.

But, think of how long it will possibly be before CF starts building back there...

I hate to think of The Beast being removed, but, it can't stay there forever unless they keep overhauling it. I see maybe 15 more years..

Heres the real answer,do you really think that CP is going to take out a ride that is still popular and is not (since the magnetic break addition) really needed too much maintenance?

The Beast not popular? What planet you from?

I must be missing something. Where in this post does he say The Beast is not still popular? The "is" should be "has", but I'll leave the grammar police up to Dare-to-Fly.

Wait, hasnt The Beast received a landmark status by ACE. There is a plaque right by the que entrance just like the one by racer. Once a coaster has acheived that status, isnt it basically against morals for the park to demolish it?

I believe it is illegal in 47 states and the District of Columbia to remove a coaster that has received ACE landmark status. :PB)

If I remember correctly, The Beast has been honored by ACE, HOWEVER because of seat dividers, lap bars instead of buzz bars, and the changes made to the ride (the ones listed above) it is NOT on the list, and the same applies to Racer.

That is why Fairly Oddcoaster is on that list, and The Beast and Racer are not, even though those two have more historical significance than the first.

I do think that ACE needs to drop that and let those coasters who have advanced safety features on the list. IMO, its stupid NOT to have them on there.

Beast is a landmark coaster. Landmark status does not require the 'historic' ride experience. Landmark simply means that it started or had significant influence on something within the coaster world. Beast for it's innovative use of terrain and unheard of length. Racer for starting the second golden age of coasters. Magnum at CP for being the first hypercoaster. Revolution at Six Flags Magic Mountain for being the first looping steel coaster. Phoenix at Knoebels for it's influence on renewing interest in coaster preservation. Stuff like that.

Coaster Classics are coasters that still operate in the classic way, such as during the first golden age of coasters. Classic wooden coasters provide an incredible sense of freedom, because of the less restrictive restraints, and the headrests remove from the experience by significantly reducing visibility to the front. I have only ridden one coaster that fits the classic criteria (though it's award was rescinded and I'm not sure why), the Zippin Pippin, which is a currently SBNO Miller coaster. It was a drastically different ride experience than a restrictive train will give you. There is nothing that can compare to the feeling of literally flying all over the car and holding on because you have to! Single position lap bars + no seat belts + no seat dividers = insanity. I was by myself in the seat so I was sliding all over the place and it was amazing.

The ACE plaque is now located just to the left of the que line, right after you enter. The next time you go, right after you go into the line, look to the left. You will see a telephone hanging on a post (right across from the vending machines). The plaque is just behind that telephone in the newly landscaped area.
