Mean Streak Catches Fire, Is Doused

Recommended Posts

A portion of Cedar Point's largest wooden roller coaster caught fire late Tuesday, but a quick response from Sandusky firefighters spared the ride from any major damage.

The city's firefighters were called to the park at about 9:30 p.m. because the amusement park's own firefighters were not there. The park is now closed during the week, open only on weekends for HalloWeekends....

Perhaps that's a lesson that ought to be taught to those gut-bustlingly funny, original, clever members who want to see (and I don't know that I could ever get tired of hearing this - each time is funnier than the last:) the world's largest bonfire in our own park, over in Action Zone!

About which:

...History has shown that complying with life safety requirements is vital. The tragic May 11, 1984 fire in the Haunted Castle at the Six Flags Great Adventure Park in new Jersey resulted in the deaths of eight visitors due to their inability to immediately exit the amusement structure....

I nearly cry every time I even think of this....

(Frankly, this is probably one of many reasons that haunts are not my idea of fun in a park)

The Six Flag's incident is why there are now strictly enforced safety and fire codes on haunted attractions. It is also probably why there is an entire day of training at Haunt rehearsals about how to handle a situation if there is a fire in your attraction.

See the post above yours.

Also, there is a five part series of videos on the web:

If you have interest, it is well worth your time.

The other four parts (45 minutes in all) are easily accessible from the search feature on youtube.

I just watched the complete set. Very sad and horrifying at the same time. It is made worse by how tasteless and uncaring the park seems to be about the entire thing. Even having a virtual reality game titled Castle Escape.

Do remember, the park has changed management several times, even since the video was shot...

Each year around this time, I usually make some reference to this tragic event...as sad as it is, those who do not remember history are sometimes doomed to repeat it. In Kentucky, there was the truly tragic Beverly Hills Supper Club fire...in the park industry in relatively recent years, this fire at Great Adventure is among the worst of incidents...

darn! So close!

Only 5,422 to go!

On a side note, whats up with this bogus Wikipedia stat:

It was constructed using 1.7 million board feet (4,000 m³) of treated Southern Yellow Pine, and if stacked one in front of the other could span the US from Washington DC to Sacramento just over three times.

While that is a ton of wood (roughly 321 miles, if measured as board-foot = 12" x 1"), its nowhere near the 7,000+ miles stated in the article..

It was widely speculated that an idiot guest lit a cigarette lighter in an attempt to find a quick way out, and the structure caught fire...

Of which has already happened before here at our very own park back in 2004. Some idiot guest lit a cigarette lighter in an attempt to manuever their way through ToT and lit up a massive chunk of burlap starting a fire. Thankfully, no one got hurt, and the portion of the maze in question, dubbed the Burlap Cave, was removed. The cage-like structure with all of the random junk inside (refrigerators, hubcaps, washing machines, etc) is where said Cave originally stood.

I believe another small fire broke out in cornSTALKERS in '07, but I'm not too entirely certain on that.

There's also an extensive book on The Haunted Castle Fire for anyone who wants to read it. This book includes many pictures and explores this tragic event in even more detail then the documentary. Ten years in the making.

Midget Wrestling and a Virtual Reality game about escaping from a burning haunted castle at a park that had a burning haunted castle kill 8 people aren't even in the same league. Not to mention tying 8 skeletons to a fence during the Halloween event and charging the parents of the people killed full admission just to see the place their children died after they died is despicable.

An edit by someone who apparently doesn't have very good math skills. This is one of the issues with having a site that anyone can edit. I went ahead and removed that :)

While I know you weren't really saying it was a ton (measure of weight) of wood - your comment did make me want to calculate how much the wood actually weighs. My calculation shows: 4000 cubic meters at 660 kg/cubic meter (~ southern yellow pine density) = 2,640,000 Kg = 5,820,204 Lbs = 2,910 tons.

I guess that explains why there are so many footings supporting the ride.

End /unnecessary geek effort
