Oldiesmann
Soooo CF will just let them use the land and make money on it? Some how I think CF would change their minds when/if this thing brings in a good amount of money.... any info on the geauga lake park side of the park yet? From the article that Terpy linked to: Cedar Fair would partner with the market in some way, a detail that has yet to be worked out, he explained. What exactly CF will do is anyone's guess, but I wouldn't be surprised if they want a portion of the profits.
The Interpreter
...The organizers want to operate the flea market every other weekend on Saturdays and Sundays. The site would be the parking lot south of Geauga Lake Road and across Route 43 from the Marketplace at Four Corners.Cedar Fair LP owns the land, which is up for sale, and is zoned as a commercial recreation district. The organizers are hoping to attract 200 to 400 vendors and 10 to 15 food and drink sellers during daytime hours from April to October, according to a document outlining the proposal. The market could attract 1,000 people each time, said Aurora resident and the project's co-founder Mike DiDomenico.... And, most incredibly, in my opinion: ...Some members also were concerned about the possible burden it would have on Bainbridge police, fire and EMS because of an increase in service calls, an opinion Aurora Mayor Lynn McGill expressed last fall when the proposal came before the township's zoning commission.... What? No new business, please, we might have to increase services? That isn't what that says...surely it isn't... My head hurts. (I think it's really..."We don't want something as trashy as a flea market in our upscale neighborhood." No, Terpy is NOT saying flea markets are trashy...he's saying some zoning boards think so, and would rather have a decaying, empty parking lot than a flea market). http://www.auroraadv...article/4990159

If you want to get that many vendors you need to have 10-20 times the number of customers.
thekidd33
^Its all about customer service Dave! You can give much better service if you only have 5 customers a day! ;-)

thekidd33
Haha I know, just goofing around a bit. If that is the sort of ratio they expect then anyone who wants to check it out better do so the first few weekends.
IndyGuy4KI
I don't see 200 to 400 vendors even showing up to an expected crowd of 1000.

PhantomTheater
http://www.auroraadvocate.com/news/article/5011226 Bainbridge rejects the plan.
Browntggrr
Other board members said they believe the township wouldn't benefit from property or payroll taxes, and the patrons of the market would only have a minimal effect on neighboring businesses. So an empty lot is better for area business?
PhantomTheater
No, a partly demolished amusement park that hasn't been touched in three years with a "temporary" landfill in the old wave pool is better for area business.
Browntggrr
^ This type of reputation is not exactly a welcome mat for potential business suiters in that area. Who would have thunk that a moveable flea market, that was willing to have a one year contract, would get this much static. Now I can understand if the land was in demand... but that is not the case here...
TheSnapper
Wow... this really sucks... This USED to be my favorite park in Ohio back when it was SFWOA! Just an amazing park!
Oldiesmann
Sounds more like they don't like the idea of a flea market cluttering up their neighborhood. Notice how none of the board members can agree on a good reason to reject the request: Lamanna noted reasons for rejecting the variance were seasonal outdoor sales of merchandise are not permitted in the commercial/recreation zoning district and it would be difficult for the township to control the activities.Other board members said they believe the township wouldn't benefit from property or payroll taxes, and the patrons of the market would only have a minimal effect on neighboring businesses. Others were concerned if the variance was OK'd, businesses in other areas could request permission to have outdoor sales from tents and trailers. The third reason is what makes me think they would find this tacky. Why should they be concerned about other businesses requesting similar variances? Are they that swamped with work that they wouldn't have time to look over said variance requests?
