Tanna
Perhaps they are planning to re-theme in a few years. Why repair the damages when it might be completely redone?
XGatorHead 8904
I don't think KI plans on building a huge roller coaster next year so this off-season or even that break between the regular season and Haunt to get a few improvements in there. Break? There is no break between the regular season and Haunt. The park is open those weekends to companies for private sellouts.
Jamesv7
Terpy has many, many times said his favorite coaster, period, is Maverick, but only in the front row. Favorite wood is El Toro. Favorite classic wood is/was Rolling Thunder. Coaster that loves me most: Volcano: The Blast Coaster. Favorite Arrow mine train: Roadrunner Express, Six Flags Fiesta Texas. What about the Night Row?

TombRaiderFTW
This topic and a recent, brief visit to Kings Dominion has made me wonder... Does anyone else think Avalanche at KD and Adventure Express at KI could switch places and very much mutually benefit each park in terms of theme? Avalanche's Olympic theme is a bit out of place in the Congo Safari Village area, and Adventure Express really doesn't fit the Oktoberfest theme at all. Apart from the tragic transferral of my favorite ride at Kings Island to a place 9 hours away from home, it really would suit Kings Dominion nicely, in my opinion. A smallish mine train-esque coaster is literally the only thing missing from that park's lineup, as far as I'm concerned.
shark6495
Well Adventure Express would have fit the original theme of the areaish around it. King Cobra, AE, Lion Country.... Then it went Actiony and the theme got lost...
The Interpreter
Look at the topography. Adventure Express does not sit on a level plain. Avalanche, on the other hand... Were Avalanche moved, I'd fear it might not be reinstalled anywhere.

benny1388
Rode it in October. I was disappointed in both the upkeep and the ride based on memories from 15 years prior. I thought the ride was extremely rough compared to memory (and other rides in the park). Granted, that could easily be difference in car/seat between the rides. My better half and the oldest agreed. While it seems low on the priority list for maintenance, it's not on my list to be removed. I think Firehawk is at the top of my list. I love the concept (I was excited as could be waiting in line), I just find the restraints painful. The KI coasters my family has little/no desire to ride are Firehawk, Adventure Express and The Bat (Top Gun, Flight Deck, whatever). The Bat is fine, it's just too far removed and not worth the trek through nothingness for such a short ride. edit: I should say that not wanting to ride a coaster and wanting it to be removed are not the same. I think the park should appeal to everybody, not just me. If someone wants to stand in line at AE, that's one less in line at Beast, Banshee, Diamondback...
The Interpreter
I honestly don't find Adventure Express any rougher than it was the day it opened back in 1991. How does Vortex (or Racer or Beast) compare to your 15 years ago experience? Remember, you have aged 15 years. You have probably changed a lot more than the ride has.
shark6495
I also find the drive home from KI much longer and more boring that I did 15 years ago (and currently I live 15 mins closer than I did 15 years ago). Shark who has grown in more than 1 way/direction over 15 years that may or may not have affected the ability to enjoy a coaster....
benny1388
Racer seemed a little rougher than memory, but not a ton. Vortex was just as I remembered. Beast was actually smoother than I remembered. AE just seemed rougher. Like I said before, it could have been car/seat choice. It could also be influenced by the fact that I rode all of those others waaaaaaaay more than AE and just have a better sample size to draw from. Regardless, with gold pass this season, I'm sure I'll hit AE a few times. I may, in fact, just to see if the car/seat choice was a significant factor.

I actually shrunk by about 40lbs since then.
The Interpreter
For the smoothest ride, ride in the middle (second) row of any of Adventure Express's three row cars. From there, you may see Terp riding in the front row of the front car (or behind you or with you in the next to last row of the train).

I actually shrunk by about 40lbs since then. Congrats! I am struggling with weight right now, so anytime posts something good like that, its worth a huge congrats.... I wonder about roughness as a psychological thing. 15 years ago, the steel coasters in the park were King Cobra, AE, Vortex, Top Gun, and Outer Limits. Not smooth in the transitions and somewhat rough. But 15 years ago they felt good. Now we have Diamondback and Banshee which by all accounts (except for a few) are buttery smooth. Could it be that psychologically we interpret it as rougher than it was 15 years ago, only because something smoother came along? While the wooden coasters remained the same because there is no "rougher" coaster. Heck maybe to even explain why The Beast seems smoother is because in our minds eye, the coaster is out of control and tough to ride? Maybe?
benny1388
Those are all valid possibilities for my perception of AE's (lack of) smoothness. For each of us, perception is reality...even if that perception is not shared with others. The only exception to some of the theories would be the impressions of the 14 year old. He doesn't have the memories of my prior visits on which to base his perception. However, he also benefits in some ways by not having the older steel coasters to compare/contrast with the new steel coasters etc. It's all fascinating to think about, but in the end, doesn't change that my family is unlikely to get in line for AE. I may while they do something else as a pseudo survey on how car/seat selection changes the ride.
shark6495
Perception is such a cool thing. I think thats probably why the multi-colored dress was such a big deal. Reminds me of how I hated Outer Limits when I was younger because my head banged around inside the harness. So I felt like it was a horrible ride. Now not so much. Same with Vortex as my head does not slam from side to side as much, I wonder if that changes the way I interpret things.

What's weird is that the opposite has happened for me with Flight of Fear (I should note that I've only ridden under the ride's current name and with lap-bar restraints). When I was younger, I loved it, but now it just feels rough (still a fun ride though... sometimes...).

I'll make sure to check it out this season to see if it's better for me.

silver2005
^No- headchopper effect is having support beams and/or track come really close to you and makes it appear to hit you. Flight of Fear's restraints really limited how your head moved, and all you had was very hard rubber to bang against. With the way Flight of Fear whipped through its many s-curves, it made for one of the worst head banging experiences ever.
jcgoble3
^ Uh, no. A head-chopper effect has absolutely nothing to do with restraints. EDIT: Beaten.
