November 26, 200619 yr Snicker. Tee Hee. Apparently the folks at Great Wolf are having fun writing press releases. I wonder how Cedar Fair feels about THIS: ...JUST FOR KENTUCKIANS In a nod of friendship to its neighbors to the south, Ohio's Great Wolf Lodge, the official resort of Paramount's Kings Island in Mason, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati, is offering Kentucky residents a special rate. From Jan. 3 to March 22, Kentucky visitors staying at the family resort and water park Sunday through Thursday, will receive a special nightly rate of $169. The rate includes a family suite, four water park admissions, the Cub Club crafts and activities program and the clocktower storytime session. 1-800-913-9653. www.greatwolf lodge.com. The OFFICIAL resort? Har har har! http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/livin...el/16081356.htm
November 26, 200619 yr Author Yep....but in the past the park and Great Wolf Lodge shared at least SOME common ownership. CBS didn't sell (as Cedar Fair didn't want to buy) its partial interest in Great Wolf Lodge to Cedar Fair. This has a high potential to get very interesting...especially given the intense competition between Great Wolf and Cedar Fair in Sandusky. Outwardly and to the public, these two companies remain cordial competitors. I strongly suspect that privately and in reality, things are very different.
November 26, 200619 yr Well, as we all know the resort was being built before the buy from Cedar Fair, Hmmm. Great find Interpreter.
November 26, 200619 yr The Great Wolf Lodge Mason Ohio does use this logo and message on their front page. I don’t think they would use it on their web site if they did not legally have the right to do so. It could have been part of the deal that the Great Wolf Lodge would be able to make the claim that they are the official Resort of Kings Island before signing the deal and then building. When Cedar Fair LLP bought the parks they were still obligated to honor the deal that Kings Island and the Great Wolf Lodge Mason Ohio previously had.
November 26, 200619 yr Author Sure, Avatar. And no doubt that deal expires at some time in the future. I bet it's safe to say that is one deal CF probably will not be renewing, at least not unless there is a LARGE sum of money that goes with it.
November 26, 200619 yr By then The Great Wolf lodge will be well established and associated with Kings Island, so I don’t think that GWL will spend large amounts of money just for what they are currently getting.
November 26, 200619 yr And actually if's very different between Kings Island and Cedar Point. Remember, CP is a resort that runs and operates it's own resort. Kings Island has no such animal and I suspect will not have in the future. The deal with GWL is (I'm certain) a very advantagious agreement for both parts. After all, would you rather the park be connected to an entity such as GWL or Motel 6?
November 26, 200619 yr I have not stayed at GWL. But i would say- it is better to have a deal with them than motel 6. When i go to Cedar Point,i always stay at breakers express and the hampton inn for Kings Island and everywhere else. I heard motel 6 has a new promotion-home away from home-bring you own bed. The cost is $10 per night. LOL!!!!

Couldn't be as bad as the Kings Island Resort and Conference Center formerly known as the Kings Island Inn (which was once owned by the park, I might add...). Also, the deal with Great Wolf Lodge is with CBS (NOT Cedar Fair). Cedar Fair was offered a chance to buy CBS's interest in Great Wolf at Mason, and turned it down. I'm pretty sure that GWL pays Cedar Fair exactly nothing. . .as CBS is still a partner in Great Wolf at Mason.

I'm speaking of that I'm pretty certain that they will work to maintain a deal with the GWL in the future. It's one of those no brainer type things. And I've not been to Kings Island Inn in probably 15 years but it was very nice at one time.
November 26, 200619 yr Author I'm not so sure....Ever hear of Castaway Bay? It's giving Great Wolf FITS at Sandusky and vice versa (Great Wolf is giving IT fits)... Cinci has a large year round population that Sandusky lacks. There's room enough for both.

Cinci has a large year round population that Sandusky lacks. There's room enough for both. I've seen no indications that CF is going to make Kings Island in the mold of a resort location. If anything, Carowinds is probably going to be formed more as a resort location.
November 26, 200619 yr Author Mr. Kinzel has said repeatedly during conference calls that the company intends to do everything possible to raise per cap spending at the old Paramount Parks. He has put repeated emphasis on the "out of park" spending at the old CF parks vs. the old Paramount Parks. I strongly suspect you WILL see out of park development at every old Paramount Park where it is possible and feasible. That certainly includes Kings Island. It may, at some point, include separately gating the waterpark, too. I doubt it, but it is possible.
November 26, 200619 yr Well, I think it will be a no brainer that Kings Island will, at some point in the near future, bring back a campground. That is another way for Cedar Fair to get more income from guests. However, plans for a new campground might have already been in the works prior to the sale to Cedar Fair. Although, we all know by now that Cedar Fair isn`t honoring all of Paramount Parks original plans for the 2007 operating season.

Sooo, I'd bet that another campground could be in the not too distant future.

Sandusky is only a small market in the Winter and Spring. If you've been to the area in the fall/winter as opposed to Spring/Summer it is like night and day.
November 27, 200619 yr I'm on GW's media mailing list, so I get mail from them every couple of weeks. Almost everything they send me reminds me that they're PKI's official resort. I'm guessing it was an agreement they signed with CBS that CF can't or won't get out of.
November 27, 200619 yr Author Hmmm. I just had a VERY odd thought. I wonder if there is any possibility that CBS agreed with GWL NOT to build a competing hotel waterpark within X number of miles of GWL for Y number of years. That would not be at all unusual...and could certainly frustrate some of CF's options. Something to think about over their next Pepsi, I guess...

It is over just this sort of thing that lawyers make their livings. And I bet at the time the GWL contract was entered into, the PP lawyers were already planning for divestiture....

Just so you know, inside the lodge on their merchandise they have imprinted that they are the official resort of Paramounts Kings Island and that they are located at Kings Island in Ohio. Just some insight for ya.
December 1, 200619 yr Well, technically, they are located in Mason, Ohio and not Kings Island, Ohio. In fact, Kings Island is also located in the city of Mason as well.
December 1, 200619 yr True, which was my thought as well. But still it is on the shirts and miscelaneous other things
December 1, 200619 yr Author I'm so old I remember when the park was located in Kings Mills, Ohio. Which I always thought was amusing, since Busch named their Virginia luxury resort by BGE Kings Mill.
December 1, 200619 yr Actually Kings Island has it's own zip code, and it is considered Kings Island, Ohio.
December 1, 200619 yr Author Actually Kings Island has it's own zip code, and it is considered Kings Island, Ohio. By the post office, yes. But it isn't. Many communities are called one thing by the post office but another in reality. Mason, Ohio provides police and fire protection and other services, and collects substantial taxes from the park. The annexation took place rather late in the Paramount era, and at the request of the park, which wanted the increased level of services. The park for marketnig purposes may call itself Kings Island, Ohio, but there is no such municipality. It's in Mason.
