  1. The saddest thing about the Subway in Coney Mall is that it replaced a delightful soft serve stand that also had sundaes, parfaits and was unique to Kings Island. Replaced with a national chain offering only a subset of its already limited menu, with greatly inflated prices. I was very, very disappointed in Paramount Parks when that happened.

  2. Posted about this a couple days ago in the general off-topic thread, but I thought I'd stick it up here as well. Last week I found this Super 8 film reel for a few dollars at an antique store in Newport. I'm watching it so far, and among the rides attractions visible are: Racer Giant Slide Skyride Unidentified ride involving boats with sails(?) Multiple early Hanna-Barbera Land rides ...and more I'll try to capture it and post it here once I'm done. Quite an exciting find for me.

  3. Yea I can't remember the place before Subway there that well but I remember Graeters going in. Wouldn't mind seeing the Subways replaced with new food options unique to the park. Make it a general deli type food stand to still allow the healthier food options that Subway offered.

  7. After doing a little bit of digging, I found that the Subway that replaced the Sweet Tooth stand opened at Kings Island in 2003 (the same year that Bubba Gump`s opened). The Graeters on International Street opened in 2005. See this article that discusses the opening of Graeters: http://www.bizjournals.com/dayton/stories/2005/03/14/daily8.html

  9. At the old Elitch Gardens, Cypress Gardens, Gilroy Gardens and the Busch Gardens parks, the lush, exotic landscaping was an attraction to many.

  10. Subway, like Costco, is largely controlled and operated by the founder. Last I heard, Subway's founder was quite ill. You have to wonder what will happen to each of these companies when the chief executive officer is someone else; someone whose blood, sweat and tears aren't poured into every corner of the company.

  11. It has a chainlift. It has a drop. It has a second hill. It has steel track on wood support. The cars are not powered. It has a human powered ''braking system.' It, as one of two Tracey Gravity Pretzel rides left in the world, is a historic steel Wild Mouse. RCDB claims it doesn't qualify as it is primarily a dark ride/ haunted attraction. Fine. So why then do they turn right around and list the Underground at Adventureland in Iowa? http://rcdb.com/215.htm Or Lost Coaster of Superstition Mountain at Indiana Beach? Which, they now list as the cars are no longer self driven (a change Camden Park also made when the former Laff in the Dark was replaced by Haunted House circa 1963). http://rcdb.com/460.htm Haunted House's near twin, Devil's Den aka Dr. Moriarty's Wild Ride at Conneaut Lake Park, the sole other remaining Tracey Gravity Pretzel, and greatly endangered, is also not listed. Yet, the two more modern rides at Indiana and Iowa are. Blazing Fury at Dollywood (and its Silver Dollar City near clone Fire In The Hole) were for years denied listing, as it was claimed they were powered cars. After long, continued pressure from historians and Herschend, with no significant changes in the rides causing it, they are now listed. RCDB now says the three non-powered sections of each qualify them--while the Tracey Pretzels cars are not powered--at all: http://rcdb.com/501.htm http://rcdb.com/1455.htm Then we have Thunder Run at Canada's Wonderland. Powered cars. And listed: http://rcdb.com/1455.htm RCDB's strident refusal to list the two Tracey Gravity Pretzels cannot be justified...unless it is because they aren't in thriving parks with owners who are demanding that their coasters be listed. I cannot come up with any other reason for their glaring omission.

  17. Parks growing their own landscaping isn't too uncommon; they save a ton of money that way. I have to agree with Marth555... that quote is a bit of a stretch. They used to do much more than they do now. It's nicely tended to, but to say it's an 'attraction'... - they used to have floral themed signs at the entrance. - Royal Fountains had sculpted greenery, now just grass. - trees lining RF though nice for shade are a bit over grown. - Coney Mall used to have those Pinko (or however they're spelled... or named) trees lining the walkways. - the covered pathway in the kids area that is now mostly tables and umbrellas. - Swan Lake The greenery areas are nice and tended to. .. but they're not an attraction.

  18. Typing on my phone is highly annoying, so I cut that response short. Downhill to me is mostly because my last few visits have been terrible. Poor quality lunch meat, crappy bread. They cannot properly prepare an egg based sandwich to save their lives. Sucks because I used to be a Subway addict. I bet I have eaten more subs from there than Jared. The one near the base in Va Beach was next door to a bar. The place stayed open until 3AM. Needless to say, I was on a first name basis with the Manager and my Sandwich was made by the time I walked into the door. I was very happy when they started to cut their Bread open like normal Human Beings. On a side note, glad that a tiny six inch sandwich fills you up. Not me, lol. I knew the FDFL would be gone eventually. They make way more money selling people smaller sandwiches with a bag of vending machine chips and tiny drink for more money. Same way companies keep packaging the same size while shrinking the amount of product inside.

  19. Wonder Mountain's Guardian wasnt listed as soon as it was annouced despite CW claiming it to be a roller coaster. It is now listed, has been for most of 2014. Voyage to the Iron Reef isnt listed yet but Berry Tales and Kingdom of the Dinosaurs both had hills. So I suspect VttIR will too and be similar to WMG. Maybe not but if it does I would be willing to bet so. Arrow built a powered mine train at KD, where is that listing?

  20. So THAT'S why the back seat is closed off! I must admit, the pop of air on the first drop of Big Dipper is incredibly thrilling and - if you aren't expecting it - somewhat frightening (but in a good way). Even in the rearmost seat that they do operate. For what it's worth, I once emailed RCDB about The Devil's Den and Camden's Haunted House not being listed when, by all definitions, they do all of the things a coaster is supposed to do and asked why they don't list them. I never got a reply...

  21. Train length is also a factor when coasters are designed. As train length increases, g-forces are intensified--particularly in the backs of trains. See, for instance, the Williams Grove Cyclone, which ran a two car, three bench PTC train, Tornado at Stricker's Grove or the closed back seats on Python at Coney Island of Ohio and Big Dipper at Camden Park.

  23. Never ate Subway at KI. Seeing 99% of the time, I order a double meat steak & cheese, That would be a major investment. I'll stick with the clown down the road.

  25. I went to CP's Subway for the first time this past fall, and only because my friends didn't feel like walking to Pink's. I was really hungry but could only get a 6 inch, they didn't have what I wanted, couldn't toast it, their drink machine wasn't working, the worker wasn't the friendliest, and it wasn't worth the price. There could be something much better in its place. Likewise with KI's and any others that might be at CF parks.

  26. Enjoy away! It ain't the first time, and I hope and pray it won't be the last. A STOPPED clock is right twice a day. A perfect time piece, off by a second, will likely never be right, though. To err is human. To screw up bigtime, you need a computer. Sometimes.

  32. Site looks kinda similar to the Kings Island site. - Company logo in top left - Tickets and season pass links on the top right/center - Search bar on end of content headers - Auto slide show of news headlines - Three columns of sub-headlines underneath main headlines I like Coney Island's new site more than Kings Island's though, mostly because of the "site map" links on the bottom. it's one feature that would be nice on Kings Island's site. And yes, I know my little bullets are nitpicking and it honestly isn't that big of a deal to me, it's hard to make a completely new outline for a website without it being user-unfriendly.

  36. I'd agree with this. I found Intimidator completely forgettable and couldn't begin to correctly describe the number of hills and turns and their proper order if I tried. That being said, I've never found Diamondback or Intimidator to be excessively rattly, apart from the exit from Diamondback's turnaround. I haven't ridden any other B&M hypers with staggered seats. But that's me.

  37. They refuse to acknowledge Camden Park's Haunted House as a coaster, while listing powered coasters. And their steel/wood bifurcation is pretty unrealistic, too.
    1 point
  38. And Behemoth has the staggered ones as well. Leviathan does not. Another perk to the four-across is that, if desired, it is possible to have more than eight cars. Raging Bull (which on an unrelated note is far and away my favorite B&M Hyper that I've ridden) has nine rows. Yeah, this is probably possible with the staggered seats too. But each additional four seats increases train length twice as much as with the four-across. And that extra car equates to a theoretical 12.5% increase in capacity. I say theoretical of course because it isn't quite a straight comparison. That is also one more row to check, which means that with the same number of seat checkers, dispatch time will increase accordingly. That isn't the only place RCDB makes that mistake. See also: http://rcdb.com/4253.htm and http://rcdb.com/4005.htm No such mistake on the page for Shambhala, but they also don't mention the trains at all for that coaster. So it also goes to show that RCDB isn't accurate. And after visiting Camden Park, there are other reasons I don't find them accurate, too.

  42. I agree with marth555, that the staggered seating provides a better view. It also offers more space to outstretch one's arms. A fair trade-off for a bit of "rattle" that's still magnitudes below most other Kings Island roller coasters.

  48. In addition to the two factors that The Interpreter mentioned, I believe there were two more. 1. Water Park profits 2. Fiscal conservatism 3. Will Koch was a coaster fan. A serious coaster enthusiast. I read he was a fan of The Beast. I'm quite sure building a great wooden coaster at his own park was always a goal of his. In fact, back when Voyage was being built, I remember hearing a podcast where Will reminisced about hiking with his dad through the Holiday World woods and property, dreaming of someday building big, amazing wooden coasters there. 4. An affordable proposal from Custom Coasters Inc. I read an article describing the initial meeting between the Kochs and CCI at IAAPA and how both parties worked hard to arrive at a price tag of around 2 million dollars. Both parties were trying to make a name for themselves, and both parties swung for the fences to create a great, affordable coaster. Unlikely that another vendor at the time could create a similar coaster for that price. Without any of these four factors, I think its unlikely that anything as revered as the Raven gets built at Holiday world in the mid '90s.

  49. And among all his well detailed & opinionated "faults", somehow CF prospered. I can think of another President who is blamed for everything, yet the country is not doing nearly as bad as some want to make it seem. I can only hope those who take such time to detail the negatives, the positives are not forgotten. Let's face it, everything he did could not have been all bad nor that much different than others in the same position of power.
