  1. so what happens after a flood, at amusement parks. What sort of work must be done to a wood coaster? steel? flat rides?
  2. I see what you are saying but would it be wrong to say that the trains they used because of the loop were heavier than the replacement trains? I just want to know if I should edit my statement from above....
  3. well because of the loop they had to use heavier trains. Because of the heavier trains it caused more stress on the track, in certain areas. Because of the more stress the wood cracked in a certain area. It was later found that the wood cracked sooner because it was inferior. So I guess if there was no loop the trains would have been lighter. If the trains were lighter the wood not have cracked at the time it did. If the wood did not crack then there would have been no accident....
  4. well as the news business finds ways to make more money it means less time to shoot updated file footage. And unless a park gives you footage you use what you have. In a perfect world the tv station would have the time and funds and the bodies to get updated footage for every article. However when you have a camera man who makes about what a walmart greeter makes, or just slightly more, who has a full plate of things to do with a boss who is more interested in the time deadline than story then you have a photog who will just shoot what they can do. I have been there and done that its not fun but you do what you can. If it means you can save an hour of your day by just shooting the lift hill and the station you do that. If it means you can save 2 hours of your day and run some file footage you do. And as I said with news stations cutting salaries and cutting workers there are just not enough people to shoot all that. So dont knock the news for giving you stock footage (just not the right footage) of the ride. Heck they could just give you a shoulder box....
  5. well the first video was before the ride opened.... the second was after that. So I would go to guess that after some testing someone said "we should slow this ride down. So we should make the skid brake longer. This may cause some sort of argument on the 'internet' in the future. But it will keep the ride running that long."
  6. ^^ was that the all you can eat back in the area between the water park and Wild Thornberrys?
  7. ^^ there are many reasons of why a tv station only has footage of the lift hill. The first helix is hidden from view by being "off in the back" and the second helix is hidden by the lift. So if a reporter/photog was told to "just spray some footage of the coaster" the photog will set up his tripod out front of the ride and shoot the lift. Another possibility is that the park does not want news reporters stomping around in the back filming what may be considered some sort of trade secret. Thirdly it could be the only thing the park wants shown as the other part was under construction at the time (odds are its all file footage of the ride at this point).... I dont understand why if you dont like the pain rides that SOB gives you are a hater and if you enjoy the non-pain rides SoB gives then you are a non-hater. You all are simplifying it for no reason. I would guess no one on here wants to see a ride taken apart. But no one on here wants to see a ride cause pain either. If you are luck enough to experience a pain free ride on SoB then good for you, you are the body type the ride was made for. If you are unlucky enough to get a painful ride on SoB, Im sorry you managed to either experience what everyone is talking about or were just unlucky. I have had both. I have not had a pain free ride since the removal of the loop (take that as it is). Could we not just say haters and non-haters because you all make it sound like we are defending/accusing an actual person.... its a ride......
  8. heres my tips. Buy one of those refillable cups and share among the family. But the biggest thing is not to eat inside the park, especially if you have a family of 8! There is a Biggs just one exit south of KI(if you want to buy some cold cuts or ice to refill the cooler) or many fast food joints located exits north or south.
  9. I dont see a major park company like CF (or whoever owns it) letting a ride rot. I see human upkeep on this ride being no different. Its a massive strucutre and the last thing the park/mother company needs is a ride collapsing during the season (looking a few years out). So with that being said I dont think youll see SoB in a pile of rubble unless some unknown "act of God" causes the ride to collapse
  10. best thing ever... i just booked marked that link and will use it now when someone does something aggravating....
  11. its on an earlier video when they are moving the cars from the days of thunder and they take the 24 car away
  12. thanks terp.... that word I never learned to spell. somehow woe and whoa were never spelling words..... plus didnt joey lawrence say whoa and not woe? but that i feel would be a discussion for another time.
  13. true if you say the word "King" then you must be talking about mr Petty. If you are talking about a true intimidation, well I will never forget Bristol and Earnhardt and Labontee banging sheet metal..... now you say you are an Earnhardt fan so why would it be bad if the black and white #3 was leading the rainbow warrior to the finish line? I say nothing would be better than Gordon chocking on E's exhaust...... but I was a Mark Martin fan.... oh whoa is me... lol
  14. so if they repaint one of those cars to be the black 3, are they allowed (i mean do they have the rights) to showcase certain nascar drivers? I am sure they got some sort of ok from DEI but what hendrick motorsports for the gordon mobile? Does Nascar have to give an "all clear" for its drivers likenesses to be used?
  15. In the AP book of writing style (as of 2006) the "correct" way was to say that alcohol was involved. According to the AP you cant mention specifically how much alcohol was involved until it was officially released from the hosiptal/police. For example, a reporter could be on the phone and talking to an officer. The officer says "yeah they had a bunch of alcohol in their system" the reporter says "is that official?" and the police would then say "no, not yet." Same thing if the officer/doctor/etc would say there was slight alcohol in the system, the reporter has to use the generic term of "alcohol was involved."
  16. well technically if you go back in time long enough ohio was under a lake.....
  17. well if you remove the wood tracks wouldnt SOB no longer be the tallest wooden roller coaster? Would it have the title of the worlds tallest wood/steel hybrid coaster. Plus if you only replace the track then you would still have to inspect and replace wood on the structure (remember the structure was what broke originally, not the track). Steel actually transmits vibrations better than wood. So if you have a vibrating coaster on steel tracks it would probably transfer the vibrations quicker into the structure. Whoever has to make this decision will not do so lightly but retracking the coaster in steel may not, in my humble but educated opinion, fix all of the issues with the coaster. EDIT: Darn you goodyellowkorn....
  18. but then again we dont know the weight of a single wood piece of track so its hard to guess. But remember a pound of lead and a pound of feathers are the same thing, its just a matter of density and distribution
  19. Video was released today or yesterday. This is not the attack video but just video of Dawn and Tilly working together. They are now saying Dawn was laying on or near a shelf in the water, which she was not suppose to do. Her hair was in a pony tail, which they state is mandatory, but the hair still driffted in or near Tilly and he snagged her. Supposedly the hair got stuck, possibly in the orca's jaws. They had to pry the jaw open twice to free Dawn. Either way other trainers have reported to NBC news this morning that after Tilly took Dawn underwater, Tilly started to get frantic with his motions and possible attitude; which they say means he knew something was wrong. Either way the video is safe for all ages and does not show the attack.
  20. windshawne, good opinion. My only thought was, you didnt tell your vet? that could have been dangerous .... but seriously shawne, many people believe what you feel, and you backed it up. But in some cases I think animals are better to be captive. Look at the white rhino, zoos are tying to help them rebreed and grow in population numbers...... side note, if you like looking at animals in a "real" setting you should check out The Wilds. They are in eastern Ohio. The animals seem to be happy there (versus a zoo) http://www.thewilds.org/
  21. sooooo.... SOB is it seen from the road? lol
  22. before we go deleting this thread could we just delete the intended posts lol i like this thread
  23. the only ride i ever almost passed out on.....
  24. its a good article. I mean places like Sea World, and other zoos across the globe, have done a lot for helping animal species alive. But then again PETA has a point also. AT what point do you cross the line between helping and hurting animals. Then again at what point do you cross the line of putting other animals on higher platforms than humans. It seems this whole tragic incident was a freak accident and to be truthful no one will know for sure. People who think the whales shouldnt be captive will say it was being natural and killing something. People who love the animals will say it was being curious and just happened. Either way it was a horrible accident and hopefully trainers can learn something from this incident.
