I would disagree with you on this one.... if it is to reopen it will be its 10th year of operation... so SOB ten years of records?
-
I did mean the lift on SOB. The only reason I asked about the harness is because of the the height and distance...... just a rookie question I guess.... (I worked at Scout camps for too long where if you walk up a flight of stairs or over a bridge more than 25 feet up you need to be hooked up into rigging in case you fall lol.... I would assume you would not get stuck on the drop and if you do then yeah you got bigger issues than finding a way to get down
-
well new is only an arbitrary word for the use of time. a 1965 ford mustang could be a new car to you...... remember the old NBC slogan, "if you havnt seen it yet, its new to you" or something like that...... but yes a good website but hey everyone can be picky
-
I would be fine getting stuck on a coaster, luckily it has never happened to me-or unhappily, but I would never want to get stuck on Drop Tower. I am not a huge fan of the height issue and the fear that there is nothing beneath me.... So lets say you were riding SOB and the train gets stuck on the hill how do they walk you down? they would have to clip you in right? some sort of repelling system?

well good to you guys who can and will not buy a season pass to show the park what you think. I support you guys cause you are standing up for something. But to be truthful, even if Beast would be torn down, I still would attend the park. A park is like anything else, it breathes it grows, it shrinks, things are born, and things die.... its the sad state of our own lives, but nothing lasts forever. Even Disney changes things....
-
so for those of you, who would not buy a season pass if SOB is torn down may I ask why? I am not attacking any of you who believe in what you do. I just am wondering. Things change all the time, and some rides just dont last forever.... so if SOB is gone why or why not are you buying a season pass.....

I rode it ealier in the day of the accident. We did not get back to Action Zone after lunch and left probably about 2 PM. I did not know about the accident till a co-worker asked if I was ok. I had no idea why she was asking. The ride seemed fine to me at the time. Well if you read the report, a few pages back by now, it said that the accident was the result of a one time failure. Versus a failure over time. I take this to mean: the wood snapped causing the injuries. Its not like the wood was slowly breaking away causing a worse ride each time. I believe what the report says, and I am too lazy to go back an quote it, that when one train passed over the section, the wood snapped causing the train to dip. When that train returned and informed the ride ops of the incident, and the rough patch, the ride ops closed the line. However, one train was out on the course and when they rolled over the affected section they dipped and had a worse injury than the first. This was the train, I believe, that had more injuries on it. Since the wood was broke at that time and the train rolled through at speed, it caused the severe injury... Well, you asked "I wonder what really could have gone on wrong between Friday and Sunday." You mentioned your experience a few days before, so I gave mine on the day of. I am not sure why my post caused you to explain everything we had already known from before because that had nothing to do with my post. I was just trying to help you answer your question with my experience on the ride. Indyguy I was not responding to you, I was responding to KI Lover, I included your post as support for my post. I was explaining to KI lover what the report said. I was not trying to start anything I just thought KI lover didnt read it or know what was happening. I hope no one thought what i said was attacking, just trying to be helpful. We are all fans and yes this thread is slightly long and confusing so sometimes its good to get a re-cap. Not all people know what happened.

i barely remember captain caveman at the park. But my favorite pic/memory is of my sister and i, we must have under the age of 5, at the bench in HB land with the smurfs. It looks like I am flirting with Smurfette and my sis is sitting quietly next to the boy smurf....

Ohio has changing climates that may or may not be best suited to extremely high roller coasters.... summers near 90 winters that can reach single digits. Probably not great for wooden structures..... Yes I know KI and other parks have wooden roller coasters but maybe its easier to maintain those rides, versus the world tallest.... Plus the Ohio part was slightly tongue in cheek... EDIT: I am not a structural engineer, I just know that most things swell in heat and shrink in cold, Wood/Steel/Concrete
-
both along with the speed of the ride, the slight engineering issues the ride was created with, being built in ohio. cheap wood. It could honestly be a little of everything. I am not being sarcastic by saying that but I do not think its just one issue in a vacuum but more realistically its a mixture of everything that is contributing to the roughness
-
Be honest though. Its not like SOB is suffering/suffered from just a flat tire. It would be more similar to your 2 year old car blowing its engine.... You owe x+y amount where a new engine costs X+Z..... at what line do you cut your loss at....
-
Well 1 and 3 would have to happen together. How would retracking just the rosebowl help the overall ride experience? If I am correct the issue is not just the tracking but the support system leading into the rosebowl, because of all the forces of the ride.... please correct me when I am wrong, just trying to get the info right. Wouldnt they need to almost tear down the rosebowl and rebuild it? I like number 5 except I dont think the park would do. The reason being is as you say in 6b if the tests are bad then they have wasted a bunch of money on the ride. If they do any sort of ride revamp I dont think you will see a big media day unless the ride is 100% perfect. Its so hard though to figure out what the park will do. Because if they put money into it, they will want the ride to be safe and enjoyable, if they put no money into it you can think they will destroy it.... so much to think about...
-
You know what tho terp, this place has at least become more civil in the passing time since the ride has closed... with that being said I am waiting under my desk peeking over at the lap top screen waiting for the bomb to drop to start the argument. Where do those of us who think that the decision that will be made will be for the overall best (SBNO, Operating, or Destruction) interest of the company/visitors in the long term view? Are we like the Swiss? BTW anyone out here on this board who is or was a soldier, airman, sailor, etc... My deepest and most sincere thank you.... thank you... THANK YOU....

KINGS ISLAND, CofC Vow To Fight Admissions Tax Proposal
shark6495 replied to The Interpreter's topic in Kings Island
The tax money would be used by Mason, and most likely not for anything that directly benefits park visitors, if other locales are any indication. Only if you consider nice roads and emergency services as not direct benefits to park visitors -
KINGS ISLAND, CofC Vow To Fight Admissions Tax Proposal
shark6495 replied to The Interpreter's topic in Kings Island
I am mixed on this issue. Part of me feels that it will do nothing but mess with the little guy as we hand over 30 cents on every ten dollars, or aboout an additional 3 dollars onto the price of the season pass. The other part of me feels that in times like this, that this is the best way to help keep the roads repaired and fire/ems/police in service. So who knows but there are worse things than getting upset over a thing like this...... -
I agree...whatever happened to "There is no such thing as bad publicity"....as long as it isn't OVER sensationalized. good and bad publicity is a good thing. but where do you draw the line? (this goes for all things and not just the park) EDIT: I hit 300 posts... yay me

how many fingers does ki have in the dyke at this point? does anyone else think that this could be the ki managers at this point....
-
yea i didnt think of it like that....

the article makes it sound like the decision has been made about the ride. but if you read closely, it seems like the quote at the end, the wrong decision part, has more to do with fixing the ride as they work versus the outcome of the ride. Knowing how interviews work in the news business odds are an important few words may be missing from the total interview. Or its poorly written explaining the outcome....

what does terpy do? (sorry I am still a newish person here.....)

Cedar I knew what you were saying, I had a bit of sarcasm in my statement, " The park has not said the ride is flawed...." so no offense intended.... Hey BB good point about guys like John Allen, but to be truthful SOB is much different that something like The Racer or The Beast. SoB is a very tall structure with some high forces acting on it. It could probably be done correctly with out a computer model but for something this big it may have been a better idea to use a calculator. I know how to frequency, length, and different hearing pressure with out using a calculator (going to school for Speech and need to know how to calculate sound frequencies) but when it comes to working with live patients I always double check my work on a calculator. So just some food for thought........
-
Well the park has never said the ride is flawed, just a guy they have hired to check out the ride. Thats darning information but still lets wait and see where the chips fall. As for seat belts, if it makes the general public feel safer, and does not inhibit the ride experience no problems for me... but thats just my personal opinion....

Yeah, but try and renew an existing Platinum Pass at another park. In the famous words of 49ers coach Mike Singletary..."can't do it". Someday Cedar Fair will wake up, realize they need to go to a generic Cedar Fair Platinum Pass and that be the end of it. I can dream, anyway... I've said it before and I'll say it again, there is no reason for KI visitors to get a PP if they are going to visit only KI. You would ABSOLUTELY upgrade to a PP at Cedar Point because of their get-in-an-hour-early-with-the-PP feature that their "regular" season pass does not have. At KI you have no incentive to do this. There are no Platinum Pass benefits that Gold Pass holders don't already get. The main reason I bought a Gold Pass at Dollywood over the regular is primarily due to the free parking and merchandise discounts. That single 20% across the board discount on purchases has been great, and quite frankly, I wouldn't have spent hardly anything there had it not been for the discount. Therefore, Dollywood not only got me for more up front but also gave me the incentive to spend more during the season. I would love for KI to be able to have some "extra" PP benefits over the Gold Pass, and in time I think this will happen, but I'm not sold it'll be anytime soon. agrred, but I asked my PP question because I live up in Columbus during the summer. Its only about and hour to cincy and a few hours to CP. Plus there are times when I go with the finace to Virginia to meet up family and we always pass Kings Dominion on the way in and out. It would be nice not to have to pay to enter the park down there....

I am considering getting a PP, do the gold perks work with the PP?
