As is disobeying the speed limit, among other things. If you (or anyone else) does that on the way up to KI, then you're just as much of a no-good dirty criminal as I am. Now, back on topic...

If they care at all about their property, then it really should be their job to prevent people from coming in and scrapping, vandalizing, spray-painting, partaking of drugs in, setting fire to, shooting guns at, or otherwise destroying their property. One fence in front of a driveway, with no additional security measures whatsoever (not even fencing around the rest of it!), shows that they do not give a hoot about the property. I brought a camera and not power tools, spray paint, drugs, matches, or weapons. There are bigger fish to fry. The singular "No Trespassing" sign on a single length of fence across the driveway means about this much: Sure, I did trespass. No use in denying that. I also knew that no one cared.

Correct. I shouldn't have been able to do so.

Went in there a few months ago (there is absolutely no security apart from the small section of fence blocking cars from entering). Not terribly much to see apart from generic torn-up hotel detritus. I have held onto the photos I took for now but might post them in the near future.

Rides Operator Job at Coney Island
HarvestmanMan replied to CoastersRZ's topic in Coney Island Central
Just checking... -
Just curious here - what remnants of pre-1972 Coney Island are still present in the park (whether being used as intended or not)? I am aware that Moonlite Pavilion is the former Dodgems/Cuddle Up ride building. Moonlite Gardens and Sunlite Pool are still around, of course. The theatre/candy shop/Backstage Grill appears to be a survivor as well, but what was it originally built as? I have heard that the arcade building started life as a bath house. Is this true? If not, what was it originally?
-
In theory, one could cause the other (but not the other way around).

Working the ticket redemption counter - right around the corner from the arcade games, in plain sight - at Coney on the evening of July 3. Lady: "How do you get those prizes back there?" Me: "You can get them by redeeming tickets from the games." She looks around confusedly for a moment. Lady: "Where are the games?" Me: "...They are right around the corner there." Asking for things like an ATM or the token machine is an everyday occurrence. But, to date, she is the only customer of the summer to ask where the games were in the arcade.

According to half of the customers at Coney's ring fling game, the bottle for the major prize is blue. According to half of the customers at Coney's ring fling game, the bottle for the major prize is green. I still can't figure which one it is. I usually refer to it as "the Colored Bottle" so that it does not arouse any arguments.

I have to apologize for the prior misinformation. Very sorry about that. Scrambler is spinning as usual with a shiny new coat of paint and a lack of Eli Bridge decals. You know it's going to be a fun season when the power goes out on the second day of the year. It was a big surprise to everyone there - luckily everything was safe and orderly. As always, check out the midway when you come. We've spent lots of hard work making it vibrant and fun to all parkgoers. Have A Fun Day!
-
Yes, that one.
-
I recall hearing the Gin Blossoms' "Allison Road" near the entrance to Coney Mall, right by the Coca-Cola Beverage Cooler Place Which I Forget The Name Of.
-
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet: Scrambler has been removed. I initially thought it was temporary, due to flooding, but the central ride mechanism has been removed from the concrete pad (and relocated to parts unknown), and all the seats have been removed...

Kings Island Super 8 reel from 1972
HarvestmanMan replied to HarvestmanMan's topic in Kings Island History
Quick necrobump here. Once I gather the necessary funds, I will be sending the reel off for digitization. That is, after I figure out how to get it out of the projector after accidentally inserting the film backwards... And what have we here?... -
I've skipped straight from the first page to here, so I'm not sure what page we are on. However, I am imagining the Seven Dwarves appearing on the sides of a certain lift hill, ridiculously joyful grins on their little cartoon faces, growling "now you will pay"...

Kings Island Super 8 reel from 1972
HarvestmanMan replied to HarvestmanMan's topic in Kings Island History
Thanks - much appreciated. The red building at 1:30 seems to be the Sky Ride loading station that is currently a Peanuts souvenir shop, but I can't tell what the various shapes and structures around it are - perhaps part of the pentagonal Funky Phantom/Squiddly Diddly/Kikky Kangaroo/Motor Mouse structure? -
Kings Island Super 8 reel from 1972
HarvestmanMan replied to HarvestmanMan's topic in Kings Island History
Sin City Antiques. I may head back there this week to see if any of the other reels are worth buying. Watched the rest of the reel, and it features some pretty good shots of Wheel Of Fortune and the Marathon Turnpike, as well as a short Enchanted Voyage cameo. Unfortunately, I've somehow put the reel on backwards and don't exactly know how to "rewind" it properly...will work on that when I return Friday evening. (For the record, I think the ride in question is indeed Gulliver's Rub-A-Dub, judging by the proximity to the rest of the rides.) -
Kings Island Super 8 reel from 1972
HarvestmanMan replied to HarvestmanMan's topic in Kings Island History
Yeah, sorry about the quality. I'm not sure how to get rid of the frames being split into two parts like that, it may be an issue with the actual film itself. Once I get it transferred, it should look considerably better. -

And here we are... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIt42gkIfYQ (Period-correct stock music is included instead of obnoxious projector noises.) More to come.- 39 replies

Enquirer: More than thrill rides bloom at Kings Island
HarvestmanMan replied to BoddaH1994's topic in Kings Island
Ginkgo. I find it especially nice that the floral clock is still around... -
Kings Island Super 8 reel from 1972

My mistake - it's actually the "Scooby Doo" coaster in the background, not Screamin' Demon. -
Kings Island Super 8 reel from 1972
HarvestmanMan replied to HarvestmanMan's topic in Kings Island History
Interesting. Makes me wonder if it would be worth getting it professionally digitized... There's quite a bit of footage left to record, but unfortunately my camera battery died on me. So in the meantime, I have about 2.5 minutes of the film rendering and uploading as we speak. There's also some really nice footage of Winnie Witch's Cauldrons - including Winnie herself spinning atop the ride, and Screamin' Demon in the background. Interestingly, the few photos of the ride floating around show the cauldrons as being black with flames - apparently when the ride was new, they were pastel-colored, resulting in a "Winnie Witch's Teacups" of sorts. -
Posted about this a couple days ago in the general off-topic thread, but I thought I'd stick it up here as well. Last week I found this Super 8 film reel for a few dollars at an antique store in Newport. I'm watching it so far, and among the rides attractions visible are: Racer Giant Slide Skyride Unidentified ride involving boats with sails(?) Multiple early Hanna-Barbera Land rides ...and more I'll try to capture it and post it here once I'm done. Quite an exciting find for me.
