DropZone99 Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 I was looking at some pics of Drop Tower and i noticed that ontop of the tower were that black and white checkered thing is theres a window, why is there a window there? http://www.KICentral.com/photos/displayimage.php?pos=-4636 Quote
TOPGUN1993 Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 To look out of? But, yeah I've never noticed that. Quote
PKIVortex Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Weird that I never saw that either. Quote
CoastersRZ Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 That is because it is a maintenance door. It usually remains closed, but on that particular day, it seems it was left open. Quote
FOFirehawkFAN Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Thats cool I wonder whats inside? Quote
teenageninja Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 I believe the motor is up there. Quote
DropZone99 Posted February 11, 2008 Author Posted February 11, 2008 I believe the motor is up there. Doesn't the cable go into the tower too? Quote
Jasper Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Shoo man that takes a lot of guts to go up almost 300 feet in the air and perform maintenence. I have never seen that door either hmmm ill have to look and see if it is open next time. Quote
Browntggrr Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 That is because it is a maintenance door. It usually remains closed, but on that particular day, it seems it was left open. Now do maintenance personnel have to climb a ladder or steps to get up there or is there an elevator? Quote
RollerNut Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 A ladder, I have seen inside of the Carowinds Drop Zone. Quote
CoastersRZ Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 There is a two man elevator inside of the tower that can take maintenance personnel up to the machine room at the top of the tower. You can see the entrance to this elevator when the ring of seats is lifted up. The hatch doorway faces the main queue building. Quote
Gordon Bombay Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 A ladder, I have seen inside of the Carowinds Drop Zone. Not the same ride, nor even anywhere near the same height. P.S. Does that picture look really pixelated to anyone else? Quote
Cory Butcher Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Eh, its not too bad. But it isn't the sharpest picture that the man who took that photo has ever taken! Some of the edges look a tiny bit blurred. Oh well, all that aside, it still isn't a bad picture from the best photographer that I know! Quote

NatiReds084 Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Since we are on the topic of drop zone I figured I would ask... Is it supposed to spin while it is on its way down? The first time I got on it last summer (yes I waited that long to get on it haha) it did not spin on its way down because of mechanical problems and I heard its supposed to? Quote
Discodude3737 Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 No. It is only supposed to spin(once) on the way up. When it opened it made a full 2 rotations on the way to the top, I don't exactly remember why it changed to just one...anyone? Quote

Hopefully it will be fixed for this season. Quote
Jasper Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Hmmm i never noticed the door i just always though that they got on top of the ring and rode it to the top and when they got up there climbed through the window. Quote
BoddaH1994 Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I've actually heard there's an elevator that goes up the center of the shaft. Quote
Gordon Bombay Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I've actually heard there's an elevator that goes up the center of the shaft. Yep. as rz pointed out earlier in the topic... Purplehaze Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I had no clue it spun while going up, only thing i could do is concentrate on not peeing my pants! Quote
flightoffear1996 Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Come on dropzone isnt really that scary. after all its fail safe. Quote
Purplehaze Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Fail safe? Thats what Gen. Custer thought at little big horn. Quote
Beast1979 Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I rode Drop Zone for the first time in a while this year, and i kinda miss the spin. But it still has that same sheer terror at the top, "Let Me OFF! GET ME OFF HERE! D*NM YOU PEOPLE, LET ME OFF!" *5 seconds later* "Ohh, my, god. GET ME BACK ON! GET ME BACK ON!" memories.... Quote
DropZone99 Posted February 15, 2008 Author Posted February 15, 2008 I've actually heard there's an elevator that goes up the center of the shaft. That would be cool to see for the next KIC event... I think there is a spiral stair case inside, idk though... Quote
Cody Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I hope it spins this season, Its a lovely view! If your lucky! you might get stuck at the top!! <3 Just pray you get stuck up there, its really fun Quote
