The Interpreter
Ask Mr. Kinzel...if you bring that many nickels to the party, I'm sure you probably could. But, do you really want to? If something ever happened on it, the first place some people would look to for compensation? He whose name was on the coaster!

Shaggy
I wish PKI had tried building a looping woodie that didn't also happen to be the world's tallest. Maybe it would have worked. PKI ONLY wanted a lopping woodie... they did not seek out the world's tallest. Werner Stengel... the designer... is the one who pushed the height. He eventually convinced PPD&E based on the "World Record" aspect. It's worth noting that Werner Stengel never visited the park once the coaster was built... and has never ridden it. Quite telling if you ask me. I am sure someone else posted this, but local news channels are reporting that the park is now saying SOB is to remain closed indefinitely and likely for good. The official statement is that it's fate will be decided in the off season. Pay your respects folks. I suspect SOB will stand but not operate for another season whereupon it will then be demolished.... ALA The Bat. Shaggy

I was just thinking about the same thing the other day. I always wondered how much lower and narrower they could have conceivably built the loop and still have the trains pass through safely. It would be interesting to see how much different the layout would have been had they made the ride smaller. I think the bigger question is what will eventually pop up in its place. I'm really glad that CF is not at present averse to building GOOD new wooden coasters (Renegade and Prowler come to mind immediately), so I am secretly hoping that GCI or Gravity Group can come in and build a good out and back in SOBs place. Beast1979
Cedar Fair seems to like putting in GCIIs lately, and I can see why. Relatively cheap, easy to maintain, and very, very fun to ride. Seems like an ideal CF purchase.
shark6495
so I know the idea of a ride re-design is almost impossible for a structure this big.... but what if they did reconstruct it.... I thought of the perfect way for an in park tease and theme for the ride..... Here is my mental commercial/tease I created for the re-design of SOB.... 2 safari style men ride in a jeep over a hill, camera pulls out as the jeep crests the hill revealing a moving bush, cut to smiling man. Next scene the two men are talking while comething in a big crate in the back of the jeep is moving around alot, with loud angry roars/screams. Show man's face as his eyes get big and you hear a breaking sound, the men scream and you hear gun shots. Voice Over guy - you thought you had tamed Son of Beast, but he was only luring you in deeper. Next shot a helicopter view of the new re-designed ride (whatever they do to it) VO - Come to Kings Island to experience the tallest wooden coaster in the world, as Son of Beast hurls you through his play pen for an excruciating 3 minutes. If you are lucky enough to survive, you will want to ride it again.... By the way I call dibs and copy write on this idea for a commercial....... any possible use of this idea must be okayed by me..... there I got my little warning in just in case someone thinks its a great idea.... Okay just thinking......

Shaggy
A re-design of the ride is a total improbability at this point. Many "enthusiasts" can't see the basics when it comes to the Amusement Industry. A park is no different than any retailer with a product to sell. Once that product's reliability, usefulness, marketability and reputation are compromised then you lose your target audience. Without a trusting audience, the product is no longer necessary and is viewed as a liability. In additon, there's other behind-the-scenes factors that affect a ride's fate. It may well be that the State and Park feel SOB is okay to re-open, however the insurer may no longer be willing to cover it because of the long list of troubles and lawsuits it's faced. SOB's poor reputation has sealed it's fate. At this point, I believe the only thing keeping it standing is the park's operational budget. As soon as they factor costs for it's removal into an annual budget, it will be demolished. Many of you simply don't recall Hercules. Shaggy Shaggy you make some very good points but unless you are a secret board member at Ceder Fair you are no different than the enthusiasts.... you just dont know what the park has planned. You are right maybe the insurance is very high for this ride; the insurer may haave many many second thoughts. But again unless you are an informed person on the inside of Ceder Fair that knows what is going on, you are just making a very educated guess/hypothesis about the future of this ride. I, too, see the future of this ride as being bleak, but then again I am just a dude with a computer so who knows.... that being said if SOB is reopened with or with out a re-design I would be willing to sell my commercial to the park...... edited because its raining and that makes me type weird..... Shaggy
You seem to have taken offense at my post. Let me clarify...Enthusiasts is a group in which I include myself. However I do not include myself in the division of enthusiasts that cannot see the forest for the... um... wooden coasters. You are absolutely right in that I am not a Cedar Fair Board Member. For all I know, it could re-open this weekend. However, if I were calling the shots... I'd put it out of it's misery. The legend and notoriety will always exist with SOB. It's been one of the most talked about coasters ever built. I know I'll not ride it again (in present shape) and that's really saying something. Most here don't know my vast past with SOB... so to see what it's been through over the years actually makes me feel bad. Many of us actually believed it was going to be one of the greatest coasters ever built. Boy, I sure rooted for it. But the fact is, it's now an embarassment to the park. And I love KI overall far more than I do any one ride in it. Shaggy

Beast1979
Shaggy is one of the most intelligent and wise members on this board, and for the most part when he speaks I at least, listen. I trust what he has to say as a pretty smart statement, and to question him would be something no one who have been on this board a while would do.
