L.A. Times Interview With Matt Ouimet

Featured Replies

I wouldn't expect KI to get a front gate coaster anyhow, mainly as there are too many buildings to go around and having a coaster go into the eyesore that would be the employee area.  I do think the front gate could use a bit of a face lift though.  Nothing too drastic, but something slightly more modernized.

While an update on front gate of KI would be great a coaster at it would take away fro. One of the best entrances ever.

Actually, we were possibly the first with a gate coaster.....look to your left as you approach the gates.

I do hope that, after seeing what kind of dark rides have been arriving at Cedar Fair parks, that we get one that doesn't just have blaster guns. I'd rather be entertained, I'm not so interested in shooting targets anymore. But that's just me.

I thinkba haunted house or superhero theme using projection mapping would be incredibly entertaining!

For those who apparently didn't read the whole thing. A look into the future??  ;)

"While several parks with beautiful promenade entrances like Canada’s Wonderland and Kings Island will never get gate coasters, Ouimet said a couple more Cedar Fair parks will eventually get “Deckerated.”

“If a ride is really popular, you don’t want to take it out,” Ouimet said. “And if it’s not, then it’s probably outlived its longevity anyway.”

"One of the biggest challenges amusement parks face is maintaining aging wooden coasters. In recent years, Idaho-based Rocky Mountain Construction has solved the problem with wooden coaster renovations that turn existing rides into wood-steel hybrids with looping inversions."

~ “The revitalization or rejuvenation of wooden coasters is probably a card that gets played for the next 10 years,” Ouimet said.

“We are obviously looking at our whole portfolio just to decide what we do with it. The industry has developed some very good, solid players these days,” Ouimet said.

“Rocky Mountain is a good example, GCI is a good example. We’ll probably work with all of them before we’re done.”

Could this be the beginning of the end of traditional wooden roller coasters?  At least at the major corporate theme parks?   The last new GCI ride to be built in the United States was in 2013.

Only time will tell.

I am not sure.. but I should go ride an RMC or an Intamin Prefab before I decide if I would even be upset about that.

Fans of Kings Island should be very glad that The Racer and The Beast still pack in the crowds as traditional wooden coasters.

Walking onto Thunder Road on a Saturday in July was sad.

Only one INTAMIN prefab in the USA....

Which I do plan to ride :) but lone or not, it was still a wooden coaster that was built not using traditional techniques..

For the record, Intamin refers to themselves as "Intamin" even on their own website, despite the logo being all caps; either's fine, sí?

Either is fine.

Six Flags bought ONE INTAMIN prefab in the USA.

No one else has.

And Six Flags bought no more.

Ponder....

Oooh. Now I gotcha.. Six Flags is at the forefront of new-age "woodies" and hybrids, I suppose. Only one non-Six Flags park with RMC coasters until 2016 hits.

I'd really like an RMC at KI.

It just has to be a new coaster that's not replacing any, especially any of the wooden variety.

Edit: Did Terpy write this? I saw a Paramount reference in that article :P

I noticed that too. It made me happy :)

With my recent track record on guesses and predictions, I should just keep my stupid mouth shut, but I will say that I cant ever honestly see the Powers that Be, nor the general or enthusiast public, allowing The Beast to be RMC-ized.  The Racer, Im not so sure about.

Seems everyone wants the next one to be a Giga. I think the next one will sadly be a Vortex replacement I say look for a floorless coaster.

I dearly hope it isnt.. [emoji22]

If you look carefully at topics where I'm missing, for instance, pondering why can often be insightful. Same thing over at some Flags places...
