The Crazy Thing About Indy

Featured Replies

I know that Holiday World and Indiana Beach exist but it’s crazy to me that Indianapolis doesn’t have some type of amusement park. They could reach 13 million people within a two hour radius.

Like I said, other parks exist: holiday world, Indiana Beach, Kings Island, Cedar Point, Michigan’s adventure, Six Flags, great America and Six Flags, St. Louis, Kentucky, Kingdom, but it’s still mind boggling to me that there isn’t something.

It wouldn’t even have to be something huge like Kings Island but I argue something the of World’s of Fun or Dorney would be enough.

I actually had this same sort of thought. Imagine if the Indy 500 could build their own version of COTALand at the Indy Motor Speedway. I don't know if they have space for it though.

There is a 126 acre nature based theme park being built near Indianapolis, they broke ground last year, called SkyLake Adventures theme park (added Adventures part to their name on Facebook a few months ago) and they’re opening this year in phase one. It will be in Sheridan which is close to 45 minutes north of Indianapolis. It won’t be as big as Kings Island, Cedar Point or even Dorney, but it will be something to do in the area that is different than your normal theme or amusement park.

I always thought with Indy being the "racing capital of the world" they could really phone that in and build an amazing IndyCar themed park. I feel that could be really successful, especially during race season.

This one might actually take off, but not sure about any big rides to compete with even Indiana Beach at minimum.

I'm not sure how well it could support something like it honestly. Yes there are a lot of people within a couple of hours, but I'm not sure how much a smaller thing would pull people in.

Over time there have been a couple parks in the greater Indianapolis area and they've closed. Riverside Amusement Park closed in the 70s, and then Old Indiana after 1996.

The trouble is a new park here would have lots of competition from the other parks in a few hours listed. People are used to them and willing to travel a couple hours for a large park with big rides and coasters. And if it was something smaller, it won't get a ton of repeats and it won't draw in people from outside the area either like a big park would.
