  1. Nothing changed. The event was planned by the park for members of Coaster Crew. To allow non-members on this site to participate, there would need to be something in place where you had to be registered with an account on KIC by a certain date so it doesn't become a situation where people are joining the site just to do this event as was the case for Banshee media day. If the site and Coaster Crew want to establish a date such as you had to have an active account on KIC by April 1, 2014, then it keeps it for those the event was intended for.

  3. ^Yes, that was definitely the most fun I've had on BLSC! Another great tradition is singing while on The Racer. This year included the Coasting for Kids standards "We Are the Champions" and "Bohemian Rhapsody", as well as selections from Frozen such as "Let It Go", which was sung several times but I once changed the words to "The rain never bothered me anyway" after one of our rainy rides, and when I changed the first two lines of "Do You Want to Build a Snowman" to "Do you wanna ride The Racer? C'mon let's go again!" Then there was our rendtion of Pitbull and Ke$ha's "Timber" where as we were cresting the top of the first hill, we started singing "We're going down, we're yelling TIMBEEEEEEERRRRRRR!" and holding that last word all the way down the hill. Good times...

  12. You guys might've read the article I wrote and posted in another thread about flubbed and failed attractions. The list included TOMB RAIDER: The Ride (naturally). I'm pleased to say that the article attracted the attention of Dave Cobb, a well-respected creative mind who's worked with movie studios, entertainment companies, and theme parks to develop some really cool rides. Mr. Cobb was the creative director and show writer for Universal's Men In Black: Alien Attack. Closer to home, he was the creative director and show producer for Italian Job: Stunt Track and Tomb Raider: FireFall. While not a formal interview or anything, I did have the chance to direct message with him on Twitter, and he's given me permission to share a few things about Tomb Raider: Firefall as it relates to our original Tomb Raider: The Ride. I said to him, "I wish KI would've just placed a clone of KD's in the show building. I don't know the logistics, but to have the running water, flames, music, etc. paired with the goddess, theatrical lighting, etc. Wow." To which he replied: "And I did a whole concept pass and budget analysis to do exactly what [you] described --- adding fire to the old one. Just a fire gag on the ceiling -- a ceiling burn like Backdraft -- but adding fire protection in the building was too expensive." I mentioned how Tomb Raider: Firefall is a "great compromise" between a typical Top Spin and the lavish and outrageous version Kings Island had. He continued: "Yeah and that's what it was intended to be: we loved the concept and the brand and PKD couldn't afford the building (or the Giant ride). The big thing we did better, IMHO, was "casting" the machine as an ancient "thing", used in ancient times for true believers to be strapped to in order to test their faith. Whereas the original never really made the machine anything other than the "emotion" of being Lara. We had a series of Lara's diary entries as signage planned for the queue, never happened." He also uploaded a video of FireFall I'd never seen. Such an impressive ride in so many ways. Just some cool thoughts from a guy on the inside. To be clear, in 2008 both TOMB RAIDER: The Ride at Kings Island and TOMB RAIDER: FireFall at Kings Dominion were renamed The Crypt. Obviously our Crypt closed. However, The Crypt continues to operate at Kings Dominion today, and (usually) features fire, water, synchronized music, and even replica film props from the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider film series, all of which Mr. Cobb oversaw. Check out his website for more.

  13. We left the house at 5:45 am Sunday morning, already having made peace with the fact that we would not be checking into Hotel Breakers that afternoon. Found a $50 room at Knights Inn, hoping that the day after Bike Week would find the place cleaned up and in working order. Made it into downtown Pittsburgh around 11am. Got smack dab in the middle of a charity walk across the Roberto Clemente bridge. When in Rome, they say...what a party atmosphere around PNC Park, even at 11 in the morning on a Sunday. Being a native Cincinnati guy, I must say that I was very, very impressed with the downtown Pittsburgh area, and what they have done with the ballpark area. Far better atmosphere than GABP, better sight lines in the stadium, especially from the concourse behind home plate. My daughter wore her AJ Green jersey, and a Reds hat, whilst I sported a Reds t-shirt. Expected the worst, but only got some good natured heckling. Met some great fans. Made it to our seats in right field, heckled Ryan Braun a bunch, watched a boring 1-0 game, made our way back to the car. Easy to get into, and easy to get out of downtown. On our way to Sandusky! Checked into the Knights Inn a little after 7pm. Talked to the nice lady behind the counter for a while, who confirmed that the hotel was dead, they were looking forward to catching their breath after Bike Week, as they were booked solid until that Sunday. This place is not the Ritz, but very clean, very good value for the money. Checked out Monday morning at 6:45, made it to the front gate of CP at 7:02am. Made it to the parking lot of Hotel Breakers at 7:20 am. Front doors opened at 8am, but we figured that beating the throng back to the lot would be a good idea, and boy, did that turn out to be right on the money. Never in my life have I seen a line so long to check into a hotel than what was in that lobby at 8:15 that morning. Felt bad for the people getting their tickets and ERT passes. Having our platinum passes, we figured we would come back at lunch time. Tailgated in the parking lot with coffee, Dr. Pepper, and donuts until 8:45. First ride of the day was Gatekeeper. Front row, right side. A fun ride, not too forceful. Found it to be a far, far better ride from the back, which, as we would find out, would be a running theme at CP. Next, off to Raptor. 20 years old, and, it shows. I would put it as if B&M and Arrow had a baby, and had an inverted coaster that would box your ears, it would be Raptor. Rode it once, will never ride it again. Just beat me up. Neat to see, though, the upgrades from that to Banshee, and what a night and day difference the rides really are. Next off to Millenium Force. Having read "millenium forceless" forever, wanted to find out for myself. Front row ride. Shirts up over the nose, up the hill we went. Up the hill we stopped...then, up and over, though at a far slower speed. Decent ride, though seemed "slow". That was right. Rode immediately again, as they let us thru without walking around, back row this time. One train wait, danced to the "house" music, and, off we went. All I can say it, anyone who calls that ride forceless has not ridden in the back row. I can see why it has been ranked #1 for so many years. Superb. Next, off to Maverick. First half of the ride, was very enjoyable. Second half, after the shot thru the tunnel, beat me to death. My neck STILL hurts...of course, we did ride it a few more times. and, the second half still beats you up pretty good. Better restraints would make that ride really, really fun. TTD was down at 10am, which would be a running theme for two full days. Talked to one of the workers in line Tues night for a good half hour, he was curious how I knew about the Rec Hall riot...lol. Very nice young man. After 4 times trying to ride TTD, and having it break down, sometimes 5 minutes into a wait, sometimes 20 minutes into a wait. Shame the thing is so darn unreliable, as it is a super fun ride. Did a turn on Magnum XL, Gemini, and the Lake Erie Eagles, then, made the walk to the front desk to check in. No wait, were able to get right into our room on the first floor of Bon Air at 11:15 am. Frankly, made the rest of that day easy to breathe. Clean room, perfect for our needs. People compain about the price, as you are paying triple retail. But, tell me. Where else can you stay where you can walk from your room, and in 5 minutes, be at the beach, at the pool, in the hot tub, in the park, on in Soak City? Nowhere. That is what you are paying for, the convenience. Not having to get into the car from 7am Monday until 11am Weds is the way to go. As far as the old favorites go, I enjoyed Gemini very, very much. If only Arrow could have made all their rides so smooth. Magnum XL-200 is not my cup of tea. Only good part is the 200 foot lifthill. Rough as can be. Rode it to say I rode it. Typical rough Arrow ride. Iron Dragon is a cool little ride, The Bat is far better, ID is just in a far better location. Corkscrew, what can I say. A classic. Short, sweet, typical Arrow ride, didn't beat me up as much as I thought it would, but not enough speed to really do that. Cedar Creek Mine is a neat, old ride. Blue Streak is perfect. Like half of our Racer, but better somehow. Wicked Twister was great. Not a fan usually of that type ride, but the pure speed is great, the twists up are incredible. Far better than what I thought it would be. Mean Streak was, truthfully, a far better ride than I thought. Rough, but just the right kind of rough. Walked on that ride for two days straight. Ride gets no love, but I enjoyed it very much. Did two of the three water rides, every time we were dressed and ready to ride, Shoot The Rapids was down. Both enjoyable, one better than Congo Falls, while Whitewater Canyon wins that battle. Last, Mantis. First stand up ride I've ridden since King Cobra. Enjoyable, restraint system is uncomfortable for a 6'6" guy. All in all, was a really neat experience to see all the different rides, some that were precursors to far better ride designs. I must say, though, that Banshee as a whole beats anything that Cedar Point has to offer, with the exception of Millenium Force. Quantity and atmosphere, CP wins the day. Great park to take a two day visit, where you can relax at the hotel/pool for an hour between riding sessions.

  14. Glad you came on tonight to rectify the situation from your end. I appreciate it, and I fully understand your reasoning and the nature of the request. My only question is how does this work for things like the GOCC/TPR deal as others are looking into that as well? No set dates were put in place for them. Might as well cover all points while we're talking about it so some users here don't scramble last minute like this one. Hopefully CC's admins will work something out with you and your team to get a date set up so that users here may benefit from this event with our coaster club partners. Again thank you for coming on to shed some light on it with a bit more detail, always appreciated.

  15. I went ahead and signed up for Coaster Crew. I'm a member of GOCC (which is $15 if you sign up for the electronic newsletter instead of the printed) It was only $10, really not that bad of a deal and you get the best bang for your buck. I already paid $26 to attend, what's another $10? When my renewal comes due for GOCC, I may stay just with Coaster Crew.

  17. So here's my series of logic for all KICers..been getting asked if we are or we aren't quite a bit today. 1. As of the event starting and around 01MAY14, CC and KIC were both allowed to attend as long as admission was paid to the park and the member registered for the event and paid dues for it through CC 2. As of yesterday 11JUN14 when Tim Hollerman or whatever his last name is (sorry bud) spoke to the park, this wasn't brought up/an issue regarding the event 3. Don states today 12JUN14 only CC members allowed, must be card carrying member So something caused the park to renege for some reason and I don't see Don posting the wrong thing on here, he's a PR manager, he usually plans things out. I mean it is kind of his job So I'll come out and ask the park, what made you change your mind in one day for this event? Lets be fair and honest with eachother. If we're your #1 fans as you have stated several times, why leave us out of an event with our coaster club partner?

  20. Exactly. Even tiny family parks have HUSS Top Spins as a sort of "staple" of their thrill rides. Cedar Fair has shown an interest in not only having Top Spins, but theming them. For one, they've maintained the theming on Kings Dominion's Crypt very well. Even greater evidence: when they relocated Geauga Lake's Top Spin to California's Great America, they went out of their way to add a pool, flames, waterfalls, fountains, lighting, etc. Even though the ride operated at Geauga Lake as just a typical carnival Top Spin, when relocating it they went out of their way to model it off of Kings Dominion's and include those details. Last I heard, the Great America Top Spin was even using Tomb Raider: FireFall's synchronized musical score by Andy Garfield (VERIFIED, though it's not synchronized to the ride cycle there). The point is, Top Spins are just such a standard and inexpensive line-up at amusement parks. Sure, Cedar Fair inherited a few well-themed ones, but they have since relocated and themed their own from scratch. It just seems such a no-brainer that such a thrilling ride fits at the park, and if they're going to get one (which most of us agree they should), it makes a lot of sense to use... oh, I don't know... the big empty building at the back of the park? Top Spins are fun rides anyway, but given the theming Cedar Fair inherited and then expanded upon, PLUS our theatrical show building that has Hollywood quality theming already built-in, it seems a fairly obvious fit! Ah well. Maybe some day.

  23. The lockers at Universal are great, but the ones at Holiday World are excellent as well, possibly even better. The lockers use waterproof wristbands to open. You can get up to two wristbands from the self-serve kiosks and up to four wristbands if you purchase from the rental booth. That way there's no keys to lose or codes to chance being seen by others. We used these lockers last year and they were the best ones (along with Universal's) that I've ever used. Here's the Holiblog about them from last year that includes a video on how they work: http://www.holidayworld.com/holiblog/2013/05/29/are-you-smarter-locker/

  26. I guess I tend to take Roy E. Disney's viewpoint and as some of you mention, the first few years were very good under Eisner but towards the end the parks and company became soulless and more interested in a quick buck than the end product. This is why so many parks were built during this time that were only half finished, shopping and dinning and very few rides. I attached a copy of Roy Disney's letter of resignation and it makes a very clear point of Eisner's short fallings towards the end of his tenure.

It's so cool at night and just in the front in general. Then rode Diamondback in the back Missed The Beast by 2 minutes so that will wait until tomorrow. This was an awesome, last minute park visit! 30. Yeah, I was strongly considering this event as an early birthday gift to myself (my birthday is the next week), thinking "maybe the show will be Cirque Imagine, that'd be excellent!" Then I finally put two and two together and realized the event is a Monday and that seems to be Cirque's day off :/ I'm still considering it, but if the show was Cirque Imagine, shut up and take my money! It would be my first-ever theme park "event" and I'd be going alone, so I'm still trying to decide if it is something I'd enjoy or not. Behind the scenes of Beast, and the description of that meal are awfully tempting... I need to make up my mind soon!

  34. Hmm... Maybe I'm thinking too big here, but one of my favorite of Universal's Halloween Horror Nights events was in 2002, when the event took over Universal's Islands of Adventure. Basically, as night fell, each Island became a "twisted" version of its daytime self. They embraced the park's daytime theme and flipped it. In Marvel Super Hero Island, dead heroes lay in the streets and the Marvel villains had won. In Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs were loose. In Toon Lagoon, the characters had been frightened away by "Treaks and Foons" who were disfigured, playful cartoon characters, etc. It would be kind of cool if each park's Halloween Haunt took advantage of the park's theming and stories. I mean, we've got a roller coaster called The Beast. Couldn't hurt to expand on that mythology and create a haunted house for it (though, at least PART of that haunted house would need to be in the woods, where you could hear the coaster roaring by...). It would be cool to have The Worksite back around Backlot with the police lights and traffic cones and cars, an Irish cemetery maze near / around Banshee, a dinosaur maze through part of Dinosaurs Alive, an "Adventure Express" style ancient tribal house in Oktoberfest, etc. In other words, embrace what the park already has an expand on it. Makes more sense than creating these unrelated haunted houses from scratch, right? Don't be surprised if I get myself hooked on this idea and start a new thread about it.

  36. RMC don't make wooden coasters, they make steel coasters that are dressed up as if it were a woodie. Both their Topper track and I-Box is considered steel track. A true wooden coaster does not use steel track, real woodies use laminated wood with mounted flattened steel strips. Unlike Topper track that eliminates the steel strips and laminated layers of wood resulting in a smoother ride, now it may provide somewhat of a wooden coaster feel, but that is due to the steel wheels on the train, replace those with ploys and it will be smooth as glass. Its surprising that they consider such a fraud a wooden coaster..

  39. They may be right - if their average wait was only one or two minutes before I get your point though, it's not quite that dramatic. The stopwatch on my phone isn't lying. I've timed the dispatches on most of my visits there and on average they are 15 seconds slower this year than they have been in the past. The one area I will agree with you here is that while it does feel like you're waiting a lot longer the numbers aren't that dramatic over a short duration. However, I'd much rather wait 25 minutes than 30. If I ride 12 times in a season that's an extra hour I can do other things with other than waiting in line. I do consider that significant. The bins have always been there since the ride opened. Fast Lane has been around for a couple of years now and even then the presence of Fast Lane alone doesn't affect dispatch intervals. The only thing I'm aware of that's really changed from last year to this year is the staff and the seat belts so it has to come from one of those two things.

  40. I think, in general, a Top Spin is just a classic flat ride that strengthens any park's lineup. I still have this incredibly dumb optimism that one will return to Kings Island, and that it'll be impeccably themed when it does. An outdoor clone of Kings Dominion's Crypt would be absolutely fine. I'd applaud it, if it came with the rocks, fountains, waterfalls, flames, etc. Seems like it would be an inexpensive and unique addition. My absolutely ideal would be that same clone of Kings Dominion's Crypt (including waterfalls, torches, fountains, etc) placed inside of our existing Crypt building. I know it wouldn't reach to the height of the building and that it wouldn't necessarily "sync" with the goddess or anything, but it makes too much sense. Why waste that incredible building? By plopping down a clone of KD's Crypt you'd have the thrill, the music, the water, and a STELLAR flat ride, and you'd ALSO have our goddess, theatrical lighting, mystery, suspense, and themed queue. It's just ripe for an out-of-this-world flat ride in an unbeatable location. Mr. Cobb himself said that converting the building to being safe for fire effects was deemed too expensive, but this is a new era. Buy a standard suspended HUSS top spin, build it out with pools and fountains, etc., and fireproof the building. What an incredible dark ride / thrill ride we'd have, and I'm CERTAIN it would still cost significantly less than even a family coaster. The foundation is all there for it. Seems so ridiculous to waste a well-themed building built to Disney-esque standards... We need a flat ride anyway!

  43. The math you're using isn't quite accurate. At 90 second dispatch intervals you move 1280 people per hour (pph) if the train is full (32 people x 3600 seconds/hour divided by 90 seconds). At 95 second dispatches you move 1212 pph. At 110 seconds you move 1047 pph. Notice that the capacity calculations have nothing to do with how many trains you're running or how long the ride time is. If the ride had 10 trains available but still only dispatched at 95 second intervals the capacity doesn't change. The only thing that matters is how frequently are you dispatching trains and how many people you can fit on each train. The 165 pph difference between 95-second and 110-second dispatches is 489 total seconds or just over 8 minutes an hour (165 pph divided by 32 people per train multipled by 95 seconds/dispatch). The dispatch times ARE longer this year at Diamondback and ultimately that's the bottom line. I'm much more interested in how we can get the dispatch times down vs. why it's happening. Ultimately though you have to figure out why it's happening in order to effect changes. If the addition of the seat belts isn't the reason then what is it?
    1 point
  44. I partially agree with the last two sentences but disagree with the first. Have you noticed how the Diamondback ride attendants are taking personal belongings from guests next in line to board all the time now? In past years they were only doing that during "power hours" but it's an every time deal now. This is done solely to try and make up time in two areas - to have the guests sit down in the trains more quickly and to compensate for the time it takes to find, fasten, and adjust the seat belt. The seat belts were installed in a position that was poorly thought out, and that has also added to the load times. Let's say that the seat belts add on 9 seconds on to each cycle (2-3 seconds delay while the on train rider unfastens their belt, 4-5 second delay to fasten the belt, and 2 additional seconds for the ride attendant to check belts) and assume 90 second dispatches pre-seat belt. Pre-seat belt you were sending out 40 trains an hour. Post-seat belt you're now sending out 36.4 trains, a difference of almost 4 trains or 116 people less per hour just due to this one change. There have probably been some minor time savings with the attendants taking some guests items to bins, but guests are still going to the bins to drop items off which negates some of those time savings. I've timed the dispatches while at the park for years. During my visits a decent crew in past years averaged about 95 seconds per dispatch (a rate of 1210 pph). Crews this year have been averaging about 110 seconds per dispatch (a rate of about 1050 pph). The Diamondback line takes longer to get through this year than it has in the past. I don't think that it's coincidence that the seat belts and longer wait times appeared at the same time. The crew can only do so much because they're almost 10 seconds behind the 8 ball before they start. Meanwhile, Banshee has typically had one of the shortest waits of any popular coaster in the park. Banshee is probably moving three to four hundred more people an hour than Diamondback right now. I still really like Diamondback - even more than Banshee - but when confronted with a 35-40 minute line at Diamondback or a 10-15 minute line at Banshee which am I going to choose?

  45. Waldameer We were getting ready to go to Cedar Point for a few hours when we heard Cedar Point was closed. Well, we (Zach, Katie and I) decide to go to Wildwater Kingdom. As we start driving there, he realizes we are not going to be too far away from Waldameer and Conneault Lake. None if us had been to either park, so we figured why not go. Sometimes it really stinks when plans go awry, but I had a great day regardless. First stop, Waldameer. The park has a couple of options. You can pay per ride or get an all day band to ride all you want. If you are a member of GOCC, you can get discounts, but you have to get the code from Jason. With not planning for this trip and limited funds, we bought enough so we could ride the coasters we wanted, then went back and bought more points for another ride on Ravine Flyer II. I have to say I love this park. It's small, it's quaint. An amazing woodie, two decent coasters and a great selection of flats. It's similar to Indiana Beach as far as offerings. Ravine Flyer II far exceeds any wooden coaster I've rode. (Will be doing Shivering Timbers very soon, I hear it might be better than Ravine Flyer II.) I found me a man while at Waldameer. I really don't understand clowns being in amusement parks. Every child I know is terrified of them. Perhaps it's because of Pennyworth? Love the statues around the park. Comet was a decent coaster. Very smooth. I really enjoyed Steel Dragon. I cannot wait to go back to this park. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  47. I think the "we are not responsible for your items" thing should go out the window when you're paying for a locker.

  48. I was in line for Firehawk last year and a family from California behind us said, "I remember when Kings Island had Top Thrill Dragster. I rode it when I was a little boy." I was about to start laughing because one, the man was around 47ish so in no way would he have ridden it even if it was at KI, and two, because his son (around 10 or 11) asked his dad if they could go on Firehawk after this, even though they were in line for Firehawk.

  49. The recent removals and renovations of wooden coaster at Six Flags reminds me of another string of ride removals at a certain other Amusement Park. Say most every addition at Cedar Point from 1994-2007. While expensive and large additions may add new guests in the short term, alienating loyal fans and customers has never worked for anyone.
