New Cedar Point website.
CoastersRZ replied to PhantomTheater's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
I liked the old website better. When you click on something like Platinum Pass Benefits, you are greeted by a large ad to purchase a pass, and then have to scroll down to see the benefits, and then click through them. I have no problem with promoting products and what you are selling on your website. Its just the website seems a little "clunky" for lack of a better term. I do like the new logo, though. -
Sit On it - A nostalgic look back at KI...
CoastersRZ replied to Shaggy's topic in Kings Island History
That is the mechanical/electrical room for Zephyr. It is likely where the hydraulics are located for the ride. I believe that there is a metal plate in the concrete that leads from the ride to this building, for easy access for maintenance should something spring a leak. -
Sit On it - A nostalgic look back at KI...
CoastersRZ replied to Shaggy's topic in Kings Island History
Thanks for posting Shaggy. Those are some wonderful pictures. Brings back lots of memories (especially King Cobra). As Malem said, if you want to contribute some of these to KIC, we would be more than willing to accept them (with proper credit). Keep the pictures coming! -
I don`t know if that would be Soak City. Seems like it would be more in line with either the picnic grove or one of the backstage buildings behind Planet Snoopy. I think Soak City would be off to the left.

I cannot comment on Timberliners, as I have not ridden a coaster that has them running on it. I have been on many GCI coasters that have Millenium Flyer trains running on them. The trains are very comfortable compared to the old school PTC trains.

To my knowledge, the park has not confirmed that there is going to be a season pass preview night on 4/14. I have not seen any promotional material (either in the fall or any emails sent out since the park closed) indicated there will be a season pass preview night.

I understand completely. I wasn`t intending to dash any imagination or creative juices. I mean I love the look that they put into the new funnel cake building in Rivertown. They could have probably built it cheaper by not including the thematic elements they did, but having them present definitely helps with the placemaking and tying it in to the theme of Rivertown.

It is just how the ride is designed. The track in the station is relatively level. So when the brakes are released, the trains (especially if there is a lot of weight in the trains), do not want to start to move. There are kicker wheels on the track, but if the train doesn`t stop right at one of the kicker wheels, then the trains need to be pushed in order to get it to move.

A lot of those things come down to ROI. Number one could be done, but the ride is not in need of a repaint right now (at least from what I can tell.). Where would you move Congo Falls to in Rivertown? There isn`t much room and would the cost of moving it boost ridership and be marketable by the park? I doubt it would be that marketable, unless they did something else to it to spruce it up and make it seem like new. Same things go for the Bat. Why go through the expense of those items when it will not increase park attendance or spending by guests (not to mention those items would be another thing that would have to be maintained.).

Capacity did increase a little bit when we changed the way we unloaded guests on Python a few season back. We no longer unload the trains in the "unload area", but now unload and load everyone from the front of the station. (There is a block sensor between the unload and load area. If the train in the station didn`t clear this sensor before the train on the course hit the sensor and break right about the station, the train would set up on the brake above the station. If that happened, a manager would have to come out and manually release that brake. With the new setup, that virtually eliminates the chance of that happening). A little birdy told me that there might be some changes to the Python this season. No track changes or anything like that, but something that might be very beneficial.

Working at an amusement park was my first job. When I started at Coney way back in 2002, I was extremely shy and timid. Flash forward to now, and I am still working at Coney (albeit as a rides manager). I have lost most of my shyness, and am responsible for dealing with guest complaints and issues. I love working in an amusement park. (It beats my desk job anyday). I can`t wait to get back this year (for my 16th season at Coney). I look forward into going into work everyday! Just think, when people ask you where you work, you can tell them at an amusement park! And you will make great friendships that will last long after you leave the park. I even worked at KI in rides during Haunt in 2013 and 2014. I was placed at Skyflyer and absolutely loved it! I would highly recommend. I can confirm that Topgun1993 is a great resource if you are interested in working at KI. If you are interested in working at Coney Island, feel free to message me.

The reason for the shorter hours on Sunday following opening day is that is Easter. In the mid-2000s they were open on Easter, and the park was relatively empty that day.
-
While Winterfest is listed on the calendar, they do not have hours provided yet for Winterfest. It simply states "Open." Also interesting to note, is that they will be closed on Christmas Eve and Day (Sunday and Monday). They will also be closed on Sunday, December 31st for New Years Eve. Winterfest V3.0 officially opens on Friday November 24th (the day after Thanksgiving). I also noticed that. I was wondering if that Friday would be a private event, or if they are going to have a pass holder preview. (There has been no mention of pass holder preview day from what I can tell, or remember in the fall). Also Friday the 14th is Good Friday. The park is also not open on Sunday April 23rd, as there is a private event that day.

I'd like to add that if you are unsure whether to source an image or not, err on the side of caution and source the image. Onviously if it is a picture you yourself have taken, there is no need to source.

Cedar Fair Coaster Trends
CoastersRZ replied to SonofBaconator's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
But in order to understand the whole story, you can't look at just the coasters. You need to look at the flat ride installations, and the water park installations to get the whole story. Roller coasters are but one facet of the story. -
Cedar Fair Coaster Trends
CoastersRZ replied to SonofBaconator's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
Past history does not necessarily indicate the future of any particular park. Not to mention, that each Cedar Fair park has a different market in which it operates, so has different needs in terms of what rides are needed and will bring the best ROI. -
A couple of items I would like to point out from an architectural perspective. The water that is used in RFYLCB is likely fed from water lines, but once the reservoir is filled, the water is treated and recirculated (with additional water supplemented as needed to account for evaporation, water lost to wet riders, etc. being provided by the water supply line). There could also be existing water supply lines in the area. Remember, that the picnic grove and train shed likely have water service running to them. I am quite positive that the water line indicator would likely be for a hose to spray down the station floor from a protein spill. Additionally, they will likely have misters in the queue that will require water service. The station may or may not need to have a fire sprinkler system. It depends on how the architect of record classified the building, based on the occupant load and construction type of the building. The Ohio Building Code governs these things. Also, I think some people are getting plumbing/water service confused with hydraulics/pneumatics. The brakes on most coasters are operated by air pressure (pneumatics). Hydraulics generally refer to liquids through pipes, specifically those related to hydraulic pistons (like those found on Shake, Rattle and Roll, for example). Water lines are generally part of the plumbing drawings on buildings, but the lines running to the buildings (and any drainage lines), are shown on civil drawings. That was probably way more information then anyone wanted to know. I could go into more minute details about the construction process and the practice of architecture, but I don`t have all day, and it would likely bore people to tears.

How Many Different Seasons Have You Visited Kings Island?
CoastersRZ replied to KIfan73's topic in KI Polls
I made my first visit in September of 1985 when I was nine months old. I have visited at least once every year since. Most of my visits in the early years were once or twice a season. Once during P&G day, and a second visit if relatives came in from Arizona in the summer. i have been a pass holder since 1998. This year I downgraded from a Platinum to Gold. I am, however, looking forward to taking my new son to the park this year. -
We went last year. The event was a blast, even though Lightning Rod didn`t open in time. I would highly recommend it. Unfortunately, with a newborn at home (four weeks old tomorrow), we likely won`t be making it this year.
-
Kind of bummed that they went to Friday-Saturday for the event, as opposed to Saturday-Sunday like last year. Make the decision to attend more difficult, as I would have to use a vacation day to partake on Friday morning/lunch. Not sure if I will make it this year or not since I will have a six month old...

Are Water Rides Dying Out?
CoastersRZ replied to SonofBaconator's topic in Other Amusement Parks & Industry News
I think you hit the nail on the head. These water rides are slowly disappearing because of maintenance costs compared to other rides, and people tend to not want to walk around an amusement park all day wet. Kings Dominion removed their Intamin chute the chutes rides in favor of adding Backlot Stunt Coaster several years back. I chalk it up primarily to changing tastes. Water parks are still big draws. Just look how much Cedar Fair has invested into their water parks over the last five years. -
Christmas Nights of Lights Coming to Coney Island
CoastersRZ replied to CoastersRZ's topic in Coney Island Central
From what I hear, it was more popular than they originally anticipated. They are looking for ways to improve and expand it for Christmas 2017.
